What's the rule on movie/tv avatar (as in user picture) gifs on GAF?
I don't want to try avoiding any spoilers only to be hit by a myriad of 5 second animations from the trailer.

Is it supposed to look beautiful? Did E.T. look beautiful? It's an alien, man! :lol Still there might be some surreal beauty to it when we see it as a whole...who knows.

I guess a better way to say it is the design looks stupid. Like, the District 9 aliens are ugly as fuck, but they look good.

Maybe it's just this pic, though.

edit: Here it is flipped, to see it in a better angle.

Yeah, I think it's because the design looks so close to humans...yet deformed. So basically he/it looks a bit disabled but I'm sure we'll get used to it. :lol I still don't think it's a stupid design choice, though. I'll judge when I see more in the trailer next week.

I think you nailed it. My brain is processing it more as a deformed person than as an alien from a sci-fi movie. The nose and lips remind me of fetal alcohol syndrome, the elongated hands make it look like it has a bone condition, and the ears just creep me out.

For those in Wellington, New Zealand: Readings in Courtenay is showing a 20 minute preview of Avatar at Friday the 21st at 11:30. No tickets, first come fist serve.

The picture freaks me out a little, and that's the best praise I can possibly give it. The thing looks so real, is that CGI?

That looks great but so does Mass Effect which is kind of reminded me off. Thought it would be more realistic looking but then again that's just one still image. Cant wait to see it in motion.

This is becoming a big joke

21st. better deliever because i have had it up to here with 80s directors disappointing me twenty years later (Lucas, Speilberg, Burton, Carpenter, etc.)

Nah, it's not like Cameron didn't make great films in the 90s. Edit: That said I like the 90s movies of Burton and Spielberg just as much. :D

Of those of you that like the image, I'd love to hear what you like about it.

I just love the way that it looks. I like the shot of Worthington, I like the coloring, I like the design of the avatar, I like everything.

I think that it's supposed to be a little ugly, but I don't think the design is ugly; it's supposed to be part human and part Na'vi, so it should look a bit more like an altered human design than a completely alien one. I mean, the Na'vi he falls in love with is supposed to have eyes four times the size of a humans by volume, but this one doesn't appear to have such large eyes. I think the slight lack of appeal of it is part of the point.

I like the subtle striping on the body, as well; all in all, I just think that the picture is cool.

It looks good from a technical standpoint but aesthetically I'm not sure what to think.

I'm having a hard time seeing how Saldana's avatar is going to be attractive (As sexy as she is..the noses on this thing looks funny as fuck).

As other have said already, one the one hand it looks great, yet on the other it looks kind of awful.
Obviously the true test will be seeing the CGI in motion, but I would have sworn the Avatar was a guy in make-up, or a model. Looks very lifelike.
I do however agree with the majority that the design of the character is very goofy. To be honest I wasn't impressed at all when the concept art of the Na'vi leaked originally, and I think these half human/half Na'vi avatar things look even worse.

By the time the movie comes out I'm hoping I've gotten used to the design, or get so caught up in the story and rest of the effects that I don't really care

Yep, that looks like a pretty goofy design from the picture. I will wait to see it moving and alive before I make my judgement on the design though. At least it looks incredibly real, considering its all CG.

What will be the big reveal is what Neytiri, Zoe Saldana's Na'vi looks like.

What an awkward picture to reveal, just awkward. Sam Worthington's posture with that Avatar in the tank right behind him just doesn't look right. Aside from the stupid picture, I really really like the design for the Avatar and in terms of realism it looks pretty revolutionary if thats CG. Now I'm really pumped to see this! :P

100% CG, no animatronics, make-up effect, dummies or any physical trickery. Just CG.

It looks a bit funky in that picture, but it looks really good in motion.

Not to mention, Quint from AICN had this to say about the scene the shot is from:

"When Moore and Worthington are introduced to their Avatars, floating in blue liquid in tubes, we get our first look at the Na’vi and that shot scared me a bit; it looked just... okay. Because of the liquid the definition of the alien (big, blue, wide-nosed, long pointy ears, thin tail) was at best plain and the real impressiveness of these creatures and the technology used to bring them to life doesn’t crop up until later scenes".

Looks like a more life like version of the action figure, which looked goofy then. Cameron should have hired Mass Effect's alien concept artists.

I wouldn't be surprised if he designed those creatures himself. I mean, he basically designed the terminator and the alien queen, for example. Considering the story the look of that hybrid at least makes sense, even if it's ugly.

Well, iirc they wanted to make the aliens more... well... alien, but at a given point they sort of asked themselves the question "would jake, as an avatar, want to _do_ Ney'tiri?", so they held themselves back a bit and went for a humanoid look, capable of retaining some of the actors' features. If I understand this correctly, Ney'tiri, being a true Na'vi, should look a bit less like Zoe Saldana.

On a related note, it's kind of funny how incredibly similar this picture is to my new wallpaper.

I was ready to be disappointed, and the picture actually rocks. Has a great 80s vibe to the design (reminds me a lot of The Dark Crystal).

Anyway, you best check out Apple trailers. If you're not from America, set your time to an American zone for accurate results.

Trailer coming Thursday, August 20 at 7AM EST

Nice birthday gift, thank you Mr Cameron.

The two nearby theaters are really trying to raise awareness towards the tremendous price increase when purchasing tickets for 3D movies. There's signs everywhere (its National Amusement theaters)

Hang on...I'm thinking it's actually 7AM PDT. The Apple Trailers page counts down to 7AM August 20th no matter what time zone you are in. It would make sense, given the location of Apple and Fox, if they're going by PDT.

7am Thursday if you're in Sydney. I was waiting for these details. It means I'll get to watch the trailer just before I go to work for the day. What a tease!

I really doubt it's actually up on 7 AM Thursday in Sydney. I think the timer on Apple.com just counts down to 7 AM on the 20th no matter what time zone you're in, based on your computer's clock. I really doubt Fox and Apple would delay the trailer release around different timezones. Everyone would have already seen the trailer on Youtube by the time the 'debut' reached America.

Seeing that thing on Apple.com makes me happy.
Finally, there is no questions. We will finally see footage.

For a while now I've been thinking of all the other possibilities of this 'performance capture' tech that this movie has developed. With a decent budget, it could literally mean the end to age-problems with actors that are too old. You could have your future war Terminator movie with Michael Biehn as the still young Kyle Reese. You could have your Star Wars VII VIII and IX with the original cast.
