Avatar-Showdown Mii vs. Home vs. 360 Avatars

Generally speaking the Avatars made me smile, the Miis made me laugh, and the Home characters made me cringe.

eck the 360 avatars are nothing but an annoyance that i'm forced to deal with.

it's also worth noting all my mii's actually look a lot like me, whereas home is great for making douchebags and the 360 avatars are great for inducing vomiting. ( i jest... but i'm not particularly enamoured with their appearance)
So sad, so true! :lol
And i kinda agree on the 360 avatars as well, not feeling AT ALL that character design.

Are you serious? The Home ones look terrible! :lol

The Wii ones are clearly the best, MJ and Hitler are perfect! Considering how many people have moaned about the limited Avatar options, there are some really good ones. The Home ones just look shit, of course, they are the closest to what a real person should look like.

Kratos in Mii form looks very harmless and innocent.

I never cease to be amazed at just how accurate a Mii can look. It's somewhat surprising that Microsoft and Sony haven't been able to top the Miis. The Miis were out two years ago and actually have less options to work with.

Better than the Home one, who is a total Collina (Italian Football referee) lookalike.

and :lol at me being a fanboy for not liking Home Avatars!

It's the power of caricature.

Mii's win this by a fucking land slide, I can't believe sony & ms both failed so hard trying to out do them. Not a single person I know in real life likes their avatar yet everyone loved making their mii.

I think the 360 Avatars come out of this comparison looking pretty good, it probably helps that the Home avatars all look like a bag of shite.

you guys are acting like that's the best possible sarah palin you can make in Home. these tests are hardly scientific and Home is still in beta. obviously mii's are going to be better for cartoon characters -- Home never set out to accomplish that.

edit: Home's current customization could definitely use some work -- i just think this test is premature.

The PS3 people are ridiculous. Is it impossible to make a person look over 30?
Even though the Miis' bodies are crappy, there's something that greatly annoys me about the stylish Avatar clothes.

As someone who thinks the PS3 is the best console ever (360 second) I prefer the 360 Avatars. The Home characters have zero charm and buying a new hat isn't going to change that.

Microsoft asked Rare to do the deed, and we all know about their little problem with character design (save for Viva Pinata -which is AMAZING from this POV- but that was created with 4kidz).
Sony chose a life-like approach that looks terribly fake, since pretty much everyone is good looking (save from Palin!) but very distant from the real counterpart as well... So it was not such an easy task, also because the Miis were so greatly designed (even if i'd love some more dresses or details as someone suggested).

Stop crying. It's just for a laugh.

I like the Mii's the best. Simplistic yet expressive. The home avatars are too uncanny valley-ish for me and the 360 avatars just come of as Mii knock-offs with a terrible pose. Why can't they just stand normally?

Avatars lack so much variaty right now, and I've grown pretty tired from Miis considering I made a couple of dozens. When more Avatar stuff is released I will probably prefer those over Miis. As for Home... don't own a PS3, never will.

Found it. Understanding Comics says it really well:

Dude, I don't understand why people are so eager to downplay what Miis accomplish
actually I do but play along

As much as I like the 360 Avatars I wouldn't know who most of the characters they were supposed to be portraying were in that gamesradar comparison without them telling me first. Most of the Miis were (and are in general) instantly recognizable. Your comic simply doesn't apply.

And the Home avatars - ugh. I've been part of the beta for months now and can't come up with anything even generally resembling me and they're just plain creepy no matter what you do to them.

hmmm... I can't tell if you're being serious or not.

Anyway, the Miis obviously are easier to recognizebecause they're ultra cartoony. It's easier to get a representation of a cariacature from them.

The home avatars are tryign to be super realistic and so i can be tough to try to get them to replicate someone if the exact right feature isn't available.

The 360 avatars are somewhere in the middle. I think they do a pretty good job getting the spirit right for the celebrities but they're not as fun and goofy as the Miis.

I look forward to forum posters supplying pics of their own Miis, 360 and Home avatars for comparison.

Funny comparison, but seriously ... Miis look fucking terrible. I can't believe people actually like them.

I practically never encounter things I can't believe, but people around me seem to have this problem all the time. It's very strange.

Something tells me the comic he posted flew right over your head, unless you're being ironic in a way I can't detect.

How the hell did the 360 win this one. Also that's one of the poorer Mario Mii's I've seen. The Mii Channel competition ones were spot on.

It must have because I seems to me the comic implies that Miis only look like people we think they do because they're so simple that they could be anyone. That couldn't be further from the truth IMO.

Edit:After reading his original post I can see that he was trying to explain why Miis are so easy to make look like the people they mimic. In the last avatar thread someone pushed the theory that people only thought they looked like their Miis in an illusionary way like how you'd recognize youself in your child's crude drawing. I assumed he was making the same argument. Nevermind.

The Miis are so much more creative. Did you see Dick McJohnson?:lol

The 360 Avatars are so barebones in comparison with creativity. And Home doesnt seem like it will have any creativity whatsoever.

It's more that the more simplistic a character is the easier it is to look like a person, or a set of people.

More detail is less universal, basically. It's a tenet of artistry.

Home is only good for realistic portraits. The Home version of Obama could be any black person with short hair.

Mii and Avatars, however, are good. Avatars are more detailed and still fun, and have more room for expansion, while Miis, I think, can reproduce people and characters better.

All three are really bad. If I had to suffer with one, it would be the Miis...sadly I have to suffer with all three of them. I don't know if Avatars or Home characters are worse, this is something I go back and forth on.
