AVATARS AVATARS AVATARS >:( READ THIS OR BE BAN-NED

Why does the forum software automatically resize images, anyway? Most of the problems seem to be folks who put up avatars which are well within the proper dimensions but cause problems AFTER the silly software resizes it.

The problem stems from the fact we are not hosting the avatars through the forum i think. There might be a solution to the problem, but until then were gonna have to use elbow grease!

gave up trying to resize/edit the Suicidal Snake, opted for k-rad Brian Wilson

no way of 100% knowing, but the law of averages would say he was probably tripping on acid when the photo was taken. :)

The best thing to do when resizing is use something like Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro. That way, you don`t get ugly ass artifacting if it`s under or over 90, and the forum resizes it.

I thought your avatar was fine
I linked to Bungie's update images. They are 115 x 130. :(

I have a Comcast account, but can't figure out how to host images. I've seen others doing it from their Comcast sites. I even started a thread in OT once asking for help. I've probably spent a good eight hours or so trying to host a single image. If someone has Comcast and knows how to navigate thier ****ing nightmare of a GUI to help out, I'd appreciate it.

Dunno if this was in reference to me, but I don't know where to download the "actual gimp installer".

The installer is on the same page, just right above the enviroment. You need that to run it first. Go back to the link he gave, and download Gimp version 2. something..the latest. lol

I did offer hosting solutions in the first post you know.

All of mine should be within the limits..I checked them not long ago and took some out that became too tall. I'll check again, though. Is this going to stay a sticky for a day then go away like the others then it goes rampant again?

I know, I guess I was looking to actually use all that space I pay for each month for other reasons - avatars one of them. It's just annoying I can't figure the damn thing out. I'll use the hosting tools you listed to grab a new avatar tomorrow. Thanks.

WOO HOOO!!! I am winnar. :lol
your av is actually 416 x 300.
If your using firefox: right click the picture and click "view image" and it will show you the true image size.

edit: evilromero - yours is oversize too, albeit only slightly.

Except when they are used as avatars, they are within the size limits. The original file doesn't matter for dimensions if they are 90x120 or less after being auto-resized, I would think..

It doesn't matter what the original size is, dumb-dumb, just the size on the forums.

Mine shows as 90x120 7.75kb, so I should be fine. I didn't realize before that the forum resized the avatars, and I got mine taken off until I fixed it :|

I have a suggested solution to the problem (at least the size problem).

In the cascading stylesheets, add the following:
.avatar { min-width:90px;max-width:90px;width:expression(this.width > 90 ? 90: true); max-height:120px;height:expression(this.height>120?120:true);}

Then make the avatars display as
<img src="whatever_avatar.jpg" class="avatar">

This should resize avatars to 90xHeight with a maximum of 90x120 for IE6, all versions of Firefox, all versions of Safari, and all versions of Opera. I can't guarantee IE5.

I love people that are asking if they're avatar is too big, when sporsk clearly states the dimensions and size in the first paragraph of his post. Christ what's wrong with you people?

they're lazy or stupid.

probably both.

The strangereaction-link is great, thanks. :)

AFAIK I found the image for my avatar here on Gaf, a while ago. So if someone has the copyright of it, say it and I will take it down.

Here's a bunch you guys can use if you want. I always make a few as backup before deciding what I want to go with, but since I think I'll stick with the one I've got for a while, I'll just share the wealth.
