The Spyro one I'm fairly sure is a modern redesign, he never looked like that when the original games came out, more like that second image.

RE: Crash and Spyro. The in-game characters are the same, but the covers and adverts had the Japanese designs.

Its the same for all the Crash games I think. I know CTR has the Japanese crash on its menu screen, but I forget if it was changed in gameplay.

A change in the Japanese versions of Crash titles is that Aku Aku has talked to Crash ever since the first PS1 title. He gives you hints in the levels through text boxes and later voice overs.

Considering Infection was out well before SIGN ended I wonder why its design was different in the anime? Maybe Skeiths weapon got upgraded after data draining enough people lol. I updated my post with Liminality comparison shots since that also had the cross version of the weapon.

Anime tends to get censored a lot compared to their manga/game origins. More visibility, I guess.

The Spyro PAL cover is the same as the US Spyro.

Edit: The JP cover of Spyro is truly terrible, and why is he called Ripto, isn't that another charater in Spyro? (I remember a level called Ripto's Revenge or something??)
 
I swear years ago when visiting Thailand I saw a poster of Half Life 2 where Alex's eyes had been altered to make her look Asian. It weirded me the hell out and I wondered if it was just a bad photoshop for an advertisement or if they actually altered her for the Asian release. Google isnt giving me anything though.. so I am guessing its just a weird poster.

It was changed in the Japanese version too. The American version is the only uncensored version (and even that was toned down from Konami's original intent for that enemy).

I've heard the opposite; the story was written as a brother/sister story from the beginning, as it was more tragic, considering the boy has to suffer more without adults trusting him, though I do think it worked better as father/daughter.

Or the missing Tetra's Trackers game from the English version of Four Swords Adventures? (Damn shame that one, it's a fantastic game and perfectly playable even without any knowledge of Japanese!)

That's not that half of it with RE4. The JPN version was heavily censored and the German version even moreso (No Assignment Ada? NO MERCENARIES?!)

Not to mention the massive list of changes made to the gameplay from the PAL GCN version onwards. All versions of the game since the original JPN and US GCN versions have been altered; enemies drop more money and less ammo and many weapons were changed (The Red 9 was made GODLY! - 6.5 attack from its exclusive upgrade?! YES PLEASE!)

Oh, there's also a lot of name and dialogue changes between the US and EU versions of Nintendo games recently (almost all games have some slight text changes now, but I'm only listing the ones that have significant changes).

Advance Wars Days of Ruin (US) - Advance Wars Dark Conflict (EU). The UK version has a completely different script to the US version! (Personally, I think the UK version is a complete disaster. Spirit Tracks: MANY name changes. Byrne became Staven (WHY?!), The town of Whittleton became Mayscore in the UK version and the list goes on and on. Cue the cries of 1000 Zelda timeline fanatics!)


Wii Party: Voice over was changed and the UK voice over is hilarious! (Sadly I can't find any vids on Youtube)


Layton series (since Layton 2): Luke's voiceover was swapped out with someone else, despite the fact that they used the US voiceover in the first game, and it is absolutely GRATING! (Yes, even moreso than the US one and I'm a brit!)

Advance Wars Dual Strike: More name changes (this is where I believe it all started recently): Koal becomes Zak and Kindle becomes Candy (OH GOD, WAS SO CONFUSING WHEN FIRST CHECKING OUT STUFF ONLINE ABOUT THE GAME!!!)


Mario & Luigi Partners in Time: All enemies got a massive HP boost in the EU version. The final boss is particularly famous for this change as it takes absolutely FOREVER to kill in the EU version! Various dialogue changes as well.


Hotel Dusk and Another Code: I've never seen the US versions of these myself, but I've heard that NOA Treehouse rewrote the scripts for these games in the US (I would imagine that they're much better going by their history; that and the fact that the UK script is absolute rubbish: Soooo dry and dull!)


Some older differences as well (not text changes)

Luigi's Mansion US - EU: Enemies do more damage, less money is placed around the mansion (It's impossible to get an A rank in the normal mansion now!), the Hidden Mansion is also mirrored now and is MUCH MUCH harder than the US version (at least double the amount of enemies, lots of red ghosts UGH!) and there's more money available (making an A rank a possibility), there's also a secret sliding move that you can only do in the EU version of the Hidden Mansion where Luigi rides on top of the Poltergust (Skip to around 3:15 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=47gjWbipvXg)


Metroid Prime US - EU: Like Luigi's Mansion, Metroid Prime had a ton of additions to make up for its delay. In addition to tons of bug fixes and small changes (the likes of which are well documented online on places like Metroid Wiki), the EU version has increased difficulty. Enemies do more damage, health pickups are rarer and hints take longer to appear.


Donkey Konga 1 & 2: The tracklist is almost completely different between the US and EU versions of the game, meaning that for all gameplay purposes, the EU version is a completely different game from the US version!
 
Animal Crossing on the Gamecube had the seasons drawn from the date input into the GC. So the US, Japanese, and (eventual!) EU versions had a pattern like Summer in June-July-August, Winter in December, etc.

Naturally, when the game crossed the equator and went to Australia...

They were kept in the exact same order. D'oh!

It had already crossed the equator though
South America is the same region as NA

They also changed Aboda, the hometown of Link in Spirit Tracks, to Outset too if I recall correctly, adding an additional call-out to Wind Waker.

By the way, do you have any more information on Tetra Trackers? I remember hearing about it at E3 years ago and was always interested in it.

It's basically like a stamp collecting rally. You have 5 characters randomly scattered around the map, each with a numbered stamp in order from 1-100. Each player has to run around looking for a character with the next numbered stamp in the sequence before the other players get there. The trick behind it is that the map on the TV screen doesn't show you where the next number is exactly, you have to work that out for yourself.

Each stamp is worth a certain amount of points (there are rupies and other items that also add to your score if you collect them, but generally the stamps are worth the most). The person with the most points at the end wins.

There are lots of other bonuses, powerups and nuances to the gameplay, but that's the basic gist of it. It does also have a single player mode (but naturally, it's much more fun in multiplayer)

It's at least understandable, given that the Southern Hemisphere makes up such a small percentage of the video game market and it would have required a ton of programming changes to allow that.

The other interesting thing is that NAL (Nintendo Australia) actually just repackaged US cartridges to release the game here instead of their usual practice of using the PAL releases (the PAL release was massively delayed, so that's good). When Wild World came around, they used PAL due to the Wii being region locked, which broke the transfer system if you bought both games locally as they were from different regions. They fixed this via a redemption, but it's still crazy that this problem was never detected.

Except we really don't. I think its still the residual effect of the platformer backlash after the 16 bit era. The rub was they were kiddie games and not as good as Sonic and Mario anyway, so I guess to combat that, the publishers thought a scowly animal character was somehow less kiddie, and they had TUDE!!!. Look, I are a serious mascot.
 
Hmm...looks interesting. Guess they didn't want to bother translating the voice acting to bring it over here.

Just realized too this is why Niko mentions that he used to be into stamp collecting in Spirit Tracks. :P

Lol, the spliting of the communities is not even right.

In another note, i always thought that in Ilussion of Time, you started in Spain.
