Babylon's Fall hits 650 concurrent users on Steam

it is such a mystery how a company that can churn out stuff like Vanquish, Bayonetta and Astral Chain can then make some shit like this... like wtf?
The creatives are not there anymore , P* is just a name now . Meanwhile Kamiya is whoring himself out .

well the issue is more that basically every game that isn't headed directly by Kamiya is shit. his own games are still amazing. Astral Chain was among my GOTY selection in 2019... Wonderful 101, Bayonetta 2, Bayonetta 1... everything this guy touches is either good or amazing imo.

the real issue to me seems to be that he is the only actually good director in that studio, and as soon as some other team not helmed by him releases somthing it is either just OK or a shitshow

it seems like Kamiya is taking in every contract he can get, then lets small teams do those throwaway projects, while he himself then uses the money made by these low budget games to finance the real projects he wants to create

Was this marketed? I'm not sure I've even heard of this, but it's by a major developer and one of the biggest publishers. I dunno, I haven't been following gaming very intently for a while, but I thought I at least knew the big upcoming titles :lollipop_neutral:

Major damage to their brand in exchange for almost zero revenue. Lose-lose. Should've never released it.
I wonder how SquareEnix didnt look at this and think "This is never gonna make back whatever we are paying Platinum".
Cuz im thinking this shit should have been cancelled way back, going forward all the way to actually publishing seems like a waste of Platinums time.

To me, videogames is an industry that no matter how bad the game is, you got to unleash it and make back whatever you can. Then go back to making games and hope gamers forget about that turd when it's time to announce their new game coming out in 2 years.

Unless it's a big game company with lots of games, a lot of these studios have an all eggs in one basket mentality.

At traditional companies (like mine), we release like 100 new items a year to add to our probably 1000 product we got out there. Theres so many I don't even remember. When you got that many currently selling or about to get newly released, you can gas 20 or 50 of them every year and not blink.

We've had entire lines of new products itching to release (which would come out as a splash of 10 items) but would delay them to next year or sometimes outright cancel it a year from launch as it didn't look worth it anymore.

With game companies, you can read endless wikis about studios cancelling a game (for whatever reason it is) and suddenly next you know they fold soon after.

Sony paying for console exclusivity

Arrested Development Gob Bluth GIF
It didn't look good from all the previous demos and betas.

This should have released FtP or like Sony and MS (if it was not Sony exclusive) should have put it on plus and game pass.

To be fair I read on the forum that there are some online issues making a lot of people being unable to play, so maybe that's why the numbers are so low?

But still, the game never looked that interesting for sure. It's also too expensive, it's 70€, which is 10€ more than most AAA games.
I wouldn't have minded trying it in a different context, but as far as I'm concerned I can't accept the idea of paying full price (and even more here) for a game that also includes in app purchase, I'm not paying this price for a F2P experience.

The only thing left to discuss is: will this have collectors value in the (far) future? Or is that not a realistic scenario, given it's an online only game with mtx?

Great grab by Sony 🤣
I wonder how exclusivity contracts are made. Do they only look for the pedigree of the developer? I don't think Sony saw this game and thought it would be great paying for it

Profoundly bad game that was met with nothing but harsh criticism since its reveal.

A low-effort cash grab riddled with microtransactions that has all the characteristics of a F2P game but retails for the full 60 bucks. Absolute insanity. A piss-poor attempt to get into the GaaS gamespace and they failed spectacularly.

Whoever is responsible for this should be fired.

January:
Platinum: "please buy us, Microsoft."
Microsoft:"you guys don't need our help, that Babylon's Fall game looks hot. Why, I bet gamers would pre order it for $100"

Later in 2022: Microsoft buys Platinum for pennies on the dollar after their biggest flop

Damn, I never even heard of this game. They must have given this one zero marketing and I suppose for good reason.

On thing that amazes me about this (in addition to the fact that Sony paid for its exclusivity) is the inability of Square Enix of doing anything to lessen the blow.

I mean... reduce the launch price... think about a F2P release... rework it... anything.

They simply went ahead even if not a single positive opinion was to be seen.

Where is the management?

Im actually one of those 650 lol. Like I said in another thread, I knew it was going to bomb but I'm a sucker for Platinum action. Good thing the game has cross platform multiplayer so matchmaking will be fine. But man the hub area was definitely looking sparse yesterday lol

I'll never understand why the weapons on your back take up so much of the screen.
It frees processing power since you do not need to constantly render as many pixels. Developers use all sorts of tricks in order to put more into the game while at the same time within the limitations of consoles. Here's another example:

What the fuck happened to Platinum.

They're a shell of their former self.
I don't know, I feel like they've had more bad games than good in all honesty.

Good:
Bayonetta
Vanquish
Bayonetta 2 (I vastly preferred the first game)

Okay:
Nier Automata (great music, but mega over rated, I'm still annoyed that I ended up beating it 3 times waiting for this "incredible" story that never came, my friend said I needed to keep going)

MGR (I beat it a few times, 4 hours with cutscenes just over an hour without, great ost though, nothing special overall)

Bad:
Transformers
Korra
Wonderful 101
TMNT
Star Fox zero
Star fox guard
Anarchy Reigns

Games they've been kicked off/or cancelled:
Scalebound
Granblue fantasy relink

Games I've not played:
Mad world
Astral Chain (never played it despite owning it at one point)
Sol Cresta

On the plus side, Bayonetta 3 looks decent, hopefully that does well for platinum, but I honestly feel like they haven't had a good game in forever. (Maybe I'm in minority though)

.
First Avengers and now this.

What made them release it so close to Elden Ring.
This is more on SE than Platinum.

I keep getting YouTube adverts for it :/

There's a lot resting on Bayonetta 3.
Eh, I don't know if that is a good thing for them.

Bayonetta 3 is basically a single player action-game, the one thing they are meant to be very good at.

And yet... 6 years in development and no release date yet?

Which other publisher would hire them to develop another one?

Platinum is pretty bad. At first I liked them, Bayonetta and Vanquish were a great one two punch. I didn't care much for their Wii game and Anarchy Reigns though, which I bought day one.

Overall I think Capcom makes better action games anyway. I think its a waste that they shut down Clover. Clover's games were imo better than Platinums output as well. Just wait when you see Capcom announce a 4k/120 Viewtiful Joe double pack just like that.

lol not only that but do they really think they can get away with that insane fucking price in argentina...HOLY SHIT. 10k Pesos for the deluxe plus 67% taxes....thats 16,700 pesos to play a game taht has 650 ccu. man, they are fucking dumb. they sent that game to die. the monthly wage in argentina is like what? 40k pesos, you spend almost 20k on a fucking game. jesus.

Me too. I bought it as well, but for PS5. Didn't know it had cross platform multiplayer. See you in the tower

For those who havent bought it or played the demo.

Its bombed because its a ÂŁ60 game that is basically a F2P mobile title inside, absolutely shambolic.

They tried to soften the blow by making it so if you get to a certain level in the battlepass your get the next battlepass half price xD

I've never understood the love for PG. I don't think I've liked anything they've put out. I wanted to like Wonderful 101 but couldn't get beyond the first few hours without being incredibly bored. Same for Bayonetta.

That's very true, in their misery Fallout 76 stand out clearly living only thanks to its awesome community however it's still a mess with false promises, poor/no content (Wastelanders, the last big content, was...wow, I don't even remember, summer 2020 ?), expeditions delayed again and again (and finally looks very poor according to datamining), nerfing everytimes (aka nofunallowed), pets has been announced then totally "forgotten", roadmaps are so pathetics and piteful (and worst: not respected at all), meat week, fasnacht, scorched holidays and moles treasure hunter are recycled infinitely, Jeff the lead of the game left Bethesda, the game is a RNG grindfest overcumbed with MTX ridiculously priced, they introduced F2P timed seasons you can't skip or rewind in a paid game with poor rewards "forcing" real fanboys fall out into a FOMO behavior, removed survival mode, nuclear winter, introduced Fallout worlds nobody asked and so on... I can go infinitely with Trashout 76. I had my time with this game but when I understood that the game was in cash survival mode for devs doing very minimal effort and obviously not listening at all, I left. (I still check from times to times reddit to see the state of the game).
Only Bethesda can reintroduce the EXACT same bugs already fixed previously by a patch several times in a row and that's not even a joke.

Fallout 76 looks so ridiculous compared to TESO. That's like comparing a Atari 2600 to a PS5.
And let's not forget that FO76 is full priced game until this day filled with F2P mechanisms.

Sorry, I guess it was a non-intentional rant and thread hijack, so much potential wasted: It hurts. Fuck you Fallout 76, please die.

I lost interest in Fallout 76 the second it was confirmed there would be zero mod support. So much wasted potential. I got the game for my birthday along with the power armor helmet, at least the helmet looks cool.

Wait, it's out?
Wait, is from platinum?
Wait, it has microtransanctions?

Basically my reaction to this news, and I don't think I'm alone.

Bodes well for the GaaS heavy future they were talking about recently lol.

But yeah, did anyone expect a different outcome?
- Game has looked bad from the first showing
- $60 Grindy GaaS with microtransactions instead of the tight single player experiences they are known for
- Truly horrible art direction that tries to look like a painting but in practice just looks like a blurry mess
- Beta was met with negative reactions from almost everyone
- Releases during a pretty insane early 2022 with tons of high profile releases

nah Taura is a good director as well(Astral Chain and Nier Automata) ,Hashimoto made most of Bayonetta 2.and that guy who directed MGR is still on Platinum we will see how Yusuke Miyata handles things later this year.

One of (only one?) the first reviewers praised the combat and boss fights in Babylon's Fall, mostly criticizing the design, i believe there must be some quality on this game as both Platinum Games and Square Enix made it, a lot depends on post launch content with these types of games

while Kamiya has supervised some games, he was mostly involved on Bayonetta 1 and Wonderful 101 (apparently Sol Cresta as well)
