Backrooms | Official Teaser by A24

I'm looking forward to this. I really loved the first Backrooms video and I hope they nail the atmosphere. I also hope they avoid cringe characters. They should go the route of The Thing where we just have people trying to get out alive. I don't need to know about their love life or childhood traumas.

I'll also take the opportunity to recommend the surreal movie The Incident (2014) which has people stuck in areas.

I just saw the trailer for Backrooms and it looks interesting

I did dabble a little into that fandom but I felt that some of the added stuff got a bit too bloated for my tastes

I'm curious to see how this translates into a full-length story rather than just a creepypasta concept. The two trailers so far have done a better job than I expected at getting me interested.

Hesitantly optimistic. Good actor, but I feel like The Backroom shouldn't be something you can walk in and out from. You should be trapped there in the nightmarish environment not knowing whether or not you'll be trapped until you die. It also doesn't quite nail the oppressive atmosphere of a place that repeats itself and has no semblance of life.

The trailer actually looks sick. I'm pretty optimistic about this!

My kid loves this game/genre/concept whatever you call it but NFW is he brave enough for that movie :P Guess we will be watching when it hits streaming, in the middle of broad daylight :P

And I like that filmmakes have seemingly forgotten the american love of guns, 'cause I GUARANTEE no one is "Exploring an endless warren of rooms" without packing :P

Pretty much this and Undertone have my interest this year. Can't wait for the UHD—which will sit on my shelf because I never have time to watch them.

A bit long, but I really liked The Oldest View part 3. The fourth is also a good ending to it. Gets proper creepy after half an hour.

Can't wait for the Backrooms. I really hope it holds up and works as a full movie. There'll always be a difference when making something for the youtube audience and something that must be commercially viable.

I hope this turns out good.

Given that it's A24, what trauma is the horror going to be a metaphor for? Generational ennui of feeling lost in the age of technological and AI advancements?

I like Backrooms but there is the possibility that movie ends up being bad
Always a possibility. I haven't watched much of the YouTube series, but it seemed like it didn't have much in the way of deep or even distinct characters? So I'm curious how the director will do with that aspect of it in a feature film.

Also, for some reason I thought the runtime for this movie was ~2.5 hours, but apparently it's only 1h45m, which is another point in its favor, imo. It takes a very rare breed of horror movie to work well at 2+ hours.

I watch this tomorrow with brother in law , literally in the backroom. 😀

Watched some of his videos on YouTube, the traumatic parts seem to be the sound, the screaming in the background, more so than the visuals, at least for me, but still creepy. Maybe this is a different movie.

With this and Obsession both likely hitting $100M box office, plus the Philippou(?) brothers (the Talk to Me & Bring Her Back guys), we are in the YouTubers making horror movies cinema era.

The Boomers/Millenials making decisions at studios finally found a way to get Zoomers in the theater.

Oh, and Markiplier with Iron Lung, too.

I recently saw a thing recently about how Gen Z is now the most active cinemagoing demographic. It seems like so many releases these days are catering to Millennial/Gen-X nostalgia. But there's clearly an audience there if they can tap into things people that age are interested in.

Just got back from watching it. It had The Cabin in the Woods vibe mixed with the whole "The Further" purgatory realm from Insidious. Pretty decent movie for a horror film honestly. Spoilers ahead.
Wow that was strange. I think the bar is so low with horror movies now that I can see how this ends up looking way better than most stuff coming out. I thought it was pretty decent honestly. The giant pirate chomping on the shoulder was a complete "what the hell am I even looking at" moment for me lol. And the whole "used to make MRI's" definitely felt like they knew way more about the place. Also the fact that the shrink ended up becoming one of the "fragmented", I guess you can call them that, near the end(literally last scene) was fucked. "It's not up to me if I can let you go". Feels like they left room for a sequel. I need more answers. I watched a youtube video on it and some guy said that its basically a mirror of ones self in a negative way. It felt dreamlike wherever they were.

Horror movies get a -1 star tax on imdb. The best ones are lucky to land above a 7.
I kind of feel the opposite.

People hype the shit out of horror movies and I rarely think they are more than mid.

Talk To Me for instance was so bad.
I think horror is just a much more subjective genre than most other movie genres out there. It's like how rock music has so many sub genres and sub-sub-genres.

Some people like the jump scare stuff. Others like the slow burn. Some like action-horror. Some like the cheesy stuff. And some like found footage films because it 'feels more real' to them.

I remember raving about "It Follows" years ago because I thought that movie really nailed the mix of slow burn and tension that would easily fit in with some John Carpenter films, but half of my friends didn't like it because it was 'not like ______' (insert whatever horror movie was popular at that time like Annabelle).

I think I tend to lean towards the slower horror that leaves you unsettled (or puzzled) yet you find yourself thinking about it afterwards. So someone like me might end up liking Backrooms, but I'm not sure until I see it.

It's interesting that you mentioned how subjective horror is since I'm very picky with that genre. I don't really have a preferences when it comes to horror I love. I have loved all types of horror. It Follows was a great movie especially for the tension that it build throughout. I just finished watching The Stepford Wives (1975) and it was a great movie. Yeah I'm iffy on Backrooms but I'm willing to give it a chance

Talk to Me was great. You're part of why they get a -1 star in my estimation lol

All good though.
Hah well I've never rated a single movie online but yeah I'm indicative of the type of people bringing the scores down.

I can really enjoy a horror movie, particularly the more suspenseful slow burn kind. But I'm still picky with them I guess.

My 11-year old is asking me to see this, what are we looking at for appropriate-ness of content? I'm assuming he's watched much of the Youtube found footage Backrooms stuff which is why he wants to go, and we've watched the FNAF movies (those were fairly tame).

The YouTube series is pretty tame. I imagine the movie will be, too. There will definitely be some F-bombs here and there, but I don't expect it to be gory or slashery.

The YouTube series is more psychological and unsettling. I think I would have been allowed to watch it as a kid, minus the occasional foul language. So if that's not a big deal, it'll probably be okay.

I'm gonna see the movie this weekend, so I can report back if it seems like it'd be too much.

So I ended up seeing this tonight with some friends.

First off, that movie fuckin ruled. I was already a fan of the YouTube series, but I didn't expect the movie to actually be that good. But, yeah, absolutely awesome.

Secondly, I'm reconsidering whether or not it'd be okay for an 11 year old. There was a lot of profanity throughout the whole thing. But, more than that, there were a few genuinely scary parts. One in particular where I was like "damn, if I saw that as a kid it would have fucked me up a bit".

Not really much gore or anything, but some pretty uncanny and disturbing imagery. The kind of unsettling shit that sticks with you. Though, I do think kids these days are probably more used to that stuff than we were at those ages.

So, yeah. I probably wouldn't let my 11 year old watch it unless they were already good with horror movies, especially psychological ones.

Thought it was really good. Well filmed, well acted, great upgrade of the Youtube source materials. Creepy as fuck.

That said, it def isn't a movie for everyone. It seemed like people were pretty split with some people raving about it, and some complaining it was stupid.

First hour or so was good enough, carried by the set design and a great performance by the 12 Years A Slave guy (idk how to spell his name so I'm not even going to try), but it completely falls apart in the last 30 minutes as it tries and fails to exposit and wrap up in a satisfying way. Would have been better to preserve the mystery IMO

Out of the three Youtuber-turned-director movies this year, Backrooms is by far the weakest and most amateurish... which tracks since the director was apparently only 19 years old when filming. Plenty of time to learn and improve, I suppose.

On the plus side, we managed to catch another showing of Obsession right after so the night was saved lol

There is a guy that does crazy backrooms movies and ai think he is one of the best at it. Andy R Animations is his YouTube channel. He put up a chronological order of his best work. I kind of wish this guy made a movie instead or had his own going on.
