Bad attempts at Attractive Character Design

Veronica Dare from Halo: ODST

So beautiful.

I hate it when parts of the inside of a character's mouth are texture-less. Pretty much the worst offender when it comes to the uncanny valley.

Psylocke is typically depicted as a feminine character, visually.

In X-Men Mutant Apocalypse, though, her sprite looks more like She Hulk.

That always bothered me. Good game, though.
Take a look at the hulked out freaks next to her. Their arms are thicker than their heads. She fits right in.

The whole fucking roster of Castlevania Judgement.

Thank COUNT DRACULA, THE LORD OF THIS CASTLE they brought Kojima back to do the art for Harmony of Despair. It was nice to see some of the DS characters rendered in her style, and it made up for Judgemess (zing!)

I'm barfin at all the porcelain-ass anime bimbos. Sorry I'm not Bobbly Hill don't want to make out with those weird cosmetology school mannequin heads. Japan maybe make ladies' faces look like they are made of skin from now on.

I don't think U3 Elena looks bad, per se, but I really don't understand why they had to change her like that at all. She looked so good in U1 and U2, and then in U3 she just looked different for no reason. More weird than bad.

If you look closely they changed every single element of her face. I played u1 and 2 before playing 3 and the difference was jarring, even my GF who never played them and only watched parts of them even noticed the difference and joked about how they "must have lost the original Elena model and only gave the 3d artists less than 24 hours to knock up a close approximation".

Stupid change but then u3 was a rushed mess.

AC1 >AC:B were perfect, AC:R is an abomination and AC3, while looking 'closer to the real counterpart', still looks completely off in-game due to the tech limitations.

AC1 Desmond or bust.
Why is AC:R Desmond from a different race?

From what I've heard there was a licensing dispute going on with the model/actor who portrayed Desmond at the time of the creation of the game (his original deal was 3 games), along side an engine/tech upgrade to the facial animation system. Due to complications they didn't get his new re-scanned face (seen in AC3) implemented in time so they compromised with someone "similar looking" amalgamation face for AC:R.

I cant stand the way the main character looks in second son and it's the main reason I will never buy the game. I feel like dmc pulled off this type of style wayyy better. This design seem like it's trying so hard to be all

Not sure if this counts but it's honestly easier to make something like this than something normal with dark souls cc tools. Although if you have the patients to play around long enough you will get good enough to make decent looking characters.

my god. this is bad

Yeah, he is one of the worst offenders from upcoming AAA games. I really hate his "I look so cool and i'm gonna kill all y'all!" look, but in reality he looks like a giant douchebag. It seems they just don't have the talent to create good looking characters, just look at Zeke "douchebag" Dunbar. The first Cole is still the best imo, he looks weird, but at least he doesn't look like a douchebag. The second one, they had it right the first time round, too bad they caved in and created another douchey design with an even more douchey voice. I like the games, I even platinum'd the first game, so I will play Infamous SS eventually, once I get a PS4. But man, I can't stand the character designs".

I'm not a big fan of Miranda either. I knew the intention was to make both look sexy from the beginning and I felt BioWare failed with these particular character designs. Their faces look like potatoes after a car accident, imo.

I think this needs to be explained here. AC1 Desmond doesn't look that good in game, in fact, it looks really bad, as if someone just used a real face photo as a texture and call it a day.
AC2 and BH, improved Desmond and he look GREAT (same with the rest of the cast, brotherhood was the pinnacle of face designing for the saga), then came the trainwreck of ACR and 3 trying to change Desmond again, god knows why.

I do not understand the hate for this one. I thought it was a real woman.

It`s the ucanny valley prime example, it looks so realistic in parts that the parts that don't, they destroy the whole picture. When i first saw that sequence i thought it was real footage but somehow altered to make it look artificial. When i look at extremely realistic humans in other videogames (Beyond maybe the best one yet) i never get that feeling because they are instantly recognizable as computer graphics. If i don't get fooled in the first seconds watching something like that then i don't mind it.

To this day I don't understand the reason she was even in the game. I allowed her on my ship and visited her constantly because I thought that at one point she finally will do or say something essential to the story; that something happens. But nope, she did nothing and were saying only stuff that I already knew from missions I did. It's especially weird because the series already had two established female reporters that could be used.

And she really looks more like Snooki than Jessica Chobot.

I still don't get what people see in Bayonetta.

Her egg shaped head and stupid ass haircuts (in both games) are pretty hideous.

Yea, alot of these posts in this thread as others have stated just really work. Most of these look fine, or are hampered down by their hardware limitations, or carry a certain styling that said poster just isn't found of, but by no means is "ugly" or bad.

Le 'sigh.

Except Lucy.
AC1
A little dead-eyed, but more or less looks like Kristen Bell

AC2
I don't know who this is, but it's not Lucy, and definitely not Kristen Bell

ACB
She looks more human now, except she's Julie Bowen (the mom from Modern Family):
I guess thankfully
she's not in the following games, who knows what she'd end up as.

Bayonetta: The Thread
The problem with Bayonetta's model is that it was done with what it seems the same proportions as an exaggerated and stylized drawing. Now that works on paper, but leads to some weird looking shit in 3D.

Bayonetta's model would have been way much more "attractive" if they modeled her like Sasha from Anarchy Reigns, which has much more realistic proportions.

Now if you say that the angels and the demons have unattractive designs, those are fighting words.

Is this a topic that covers just facial design, physical proportions, and the 'chief' character design, or does it also incorporate alternate costumes and fashion faux pas?

I think the Bayonetta character design is fine, just that some of the costumes are less than scintillating.

Oh whatever, Calista was badass in her tattered dress doing backflips. She was one of my favorite characters in that game.

And holy shit at all the Second Son hate. He's far more attractive than the generic beefy brown- haired protagonist in every other game.
Don't get me wrong, that is also the reason I posted Calista. I liked her character and personality, and in my head, tried my best to tell myself she was pretty, but when I look at the concept art and back to her.... She's not in-game.

It's probably because he looks like some punk ass tight pants hipster you see walking around. When I think about the trailers of this game it reminds me of a cheesy blockbuster. (Not that I actually hate the character or design, or game. Just an analysis.)
Kimihiko Fujisaka gets some SERIOUS "doesn't do the character justice" games. Cavia, I know you tryin, but man that concept art goes to waste fast in Drakengard.
Tragedy
And here she is in Heavy Rain & real life.

The former and I agree.

JRPGs vs WRPGs

Dayum son. lol

Why would someone do something so horrible as to close a thread about waifus?
Well
1. It was never about "Waifus". lol It was about attractive characters and designs. It later got renamed.
2. Y'all motherfuckas don't know how to behave!
3. afoni

So true. They also dare to change Shanoa design, i mean, why change perfection?

i actually prefer the judgment design since she doesn't look like a Shiki ripoff.

Bayonetta looks fine in her default costume it's just the alts that look really awkward.

JRPGs vs WRPGs
This is one thing I don't understand about wRPGs. The character design.

There are probably many legitimate arguments about turn based combat being dated or at least not being used thoughtfully in modern Japanese RPGs. Or about more Japanese RPGs needing to experiment with non-linearity.

But the character design in wRPGs is extremely off-putting to me. I don't want to be shallow and assert that every character has to be a beautiful supermodel. But the facial proportions that developers like Bioware and Bethesda choose to design their characters with just seems... strange and nonsensical. I don't understand why someone would design characters like that.

This goes aside from the fact that I like the cute anime designs that are common in anime designs. Lulu doesn't look cute or childlike in any fashion. In fact I'm not exactly a fan of Lulu, I dislike how it seems like she was designed to be a 'breast jiggle fanservice' character. But her facial design is at least good. Square Enix did a good job of designing her face.

Looking on the right, however, it looks like Bioware doesn't have nearly as good of an understanding of facial design as Square Enix when designing that character. Since I don't understand why someone would choose to design a face like that, I tend to assume then that it wasn't an intentional choice and that some companies like Bioware simply aren't good at facial design.

A female character went from Killzone 3, to real life, and then to an old Killzone 2 screenshot.

.... me neither :/

sorry for using kz2 screenshot, it looked the same anyway (yeah sharper, more poly, whatever nit picking..)

I´m trying to say, they have such a great art design, look at the characters, amazing work, but in the final game it is simply not there anymore, overuse of effects and same colour palette destroys the whole design imo
