Bad demos for good games?

Would have bought Wonderful 101 if it weren't for the demo. I think I even got it free from a Club Nintendo reward at some point and still haven't played it because of the demo. But I hear all the time on here it was just a really bad demo.

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate's demo was fine for returning players and horribly confusing for new players. Especially since it didn't support the circle pad pro or online play.

MH4U's demo was a MASSIVE improvement. Still kind of tosses you to the wolves but I saw a much better reception for it.

Tearaway Unfolded. I was sold on the game from before so I played it and loved it, and I was happy when it was revealed the game was getting a demo so that more people could find out how good it is, only to find out that they chose the most underwhelming section of the game (a section of the game where even I was doubting whether this game was going to be any good or not).

I'd say the demo put off more people than it would've convinced.

Monster Hunter demos.
If only the start of the game had more interesting monsters, because they could do a demo up to the first actual monster so people could get a much better feel for the game.

I'm going to say Batman: Arkham Asylum.

Now... it wasn't bad per se, but when I played it, it made me concerned for the game I was already cautiously optimistic about at the time. Something just didn't seem right to me.

Of course then the game actually came out, I started playing, and quickly enough you find out that the demo was actually a compression of a couple of areas and the real layout was different. I absolutely loved the actual game, and still consider it the best of the Arkham games (the smaller environment just added so much more for me).

How can I be the first one to mention Dead Space? I hated the demo, was flabbergasted when I saw the game at an friends. Amazing game

I honestly don't know, Dead Space leapt to mind as well.

That demo was complete shit and actually put me off buying the game - which turned out to be almost nothing like the demo.

The games weren't good per se but the demos were awful:

the first Area 51 and The Suffering 2 gave a terrible impression.

Hopefully Final Fantasy XV

This for sure. I loved Episode Duscae, so I hope the Platinum demo doesn't turn more people off from the series.

Yokai Watch is also up there. I hated the demo, but the actual game is quite charming. And the battles feel deeper in the actual game since you can't just spam specials.

The problem with W101's demo is that it lacks the epic context and the superb story-integrated tutorial of the main game. It's just a bunch of initially awkward fights against some wacky-looking aliens. It's overwhelming in mechanical terms, underwhelming in narrative terms, and it turned a lot of people off before they ever got to experience the full title. I never bothered with the demo and I'm glad for it.

I think in the end it actually significantly hurt the games sales, had a few friends try it and decide not to buy it too. I remember the reaction on GAF to the demo was pretty poor too. The people that were kind of curious about the game just said nope immediately.

The demo for Hitman Blood Money is the tutorial of the game, which is completely linear and not at all representative of what the rest of the game is. I wonder if many people got turned off by it.

I liked that demo actually. I remember playing it a ton before I got the retail release. It was linear, but you still had a bit of leeway in how you took out enemies.
