Badly reviewed games that you liked

I loved Army of Two. The story was dumb, the characters were ripped straight out of a Mountain Dew ad, but the shooting was solid, and co-op was really damn fun. Nothing is more amusing than shooting gold plated missiles at people.

Tales of Symphonia : Dawn Of The New World (69 Metacritic)

Best version of the Tales 3d battle system, monster recruiting, motion capture animation, and voice acted skits. Also this game made me laugh more than any other, had a helluva good time with it.

This is what happens when reviews don't play the games they review.

"Poke'mon Clone"? :lol

I thoroughly enjoyed Messiah by Shiny for PC.

Most reviewers panned it for the controls and camera. I had no problem playing it with my trusty mouse and keyboard.

Yes. Man I was NOT expecting the skits to be that funny.

Tenebrae is awesome.

Legend of Dragoon.

I can't believe the game was rated so low considering it's better than several universally praised RPGs on the system (Xenogears, Valkyrie Profile, Vagrant Story)

I know this game is technically a piece of garbage... but that didn't seem to matter at all when all my friends and I played it for 3 years straight.

Oh, I didn't know it got that bad reviews :(
The game is awesome. Well the story sucks, but I just love the atmosphere and the combat.

The problem with Star Wars games is that the license seems to seriously cloud fans judgement.

The last batch of decent Star Wars games were released on the Super Nintendo, though I haven't played Force Unleashed yet.

oh hell yes! I loved this game. My vote though goes to Sonic Heroes. No joke.
Sonic Heroes wasnt badly reviewed though? I really like Sonic Heroes and I can't understand all the hate it's receiving nowadays, but the reviews were OK iirc.

STAR WARS SHADOWS OF THE EMPIRE!

fuck the reviews..
Agreed, awesome, awesome game, one of my favourite N64 games.

I don't even remember any negative reviews. I got the game, loved it and never looked back.
In the UK, most N64 rags had so little to do it seems that they liked to "re-visit" review.

Even my favourite 64 Magazine turned a 88% initial review into something like 58%, citing that the game hadn't aged well, or something. Idiots.

did anyone mention WRECKLESS yet ? : )

yes, i did enjoy it.

I also enjoyed Super Runabout on Dreamcast.

Hell yeah, wreckless was half the reason I got an xbox. The game itself was decent, but my god, the GRAPHICS. I bet if I fired that bitch up today I'd still be impressed.

OK, OK, so Shaolin Monks actually received positive reviews, but not so much the case with the other two. I still take pleasure in playing these games. Sometimes you just gotta mutilate your opponent, and MK fulfills that requirement nicely.

Jet Force Gemini (N64)
- Gets the same lack of respect as GunValkyrie, mainly due to controls and learning curve. Some elements of frustration persist, but it remains one of my fave N64 games.

Ya' know - I've always wondered what that game was about. I remember buying an early Test Drive game for my N64 over Jet Force Gemini. I still think I made the wrong choice. =P

I myself always enjoyed Jurassic Park on the Genesis. I played it again a few years ago and realized that is wasn't really that good, but I still enjoyed it. I was about 12 when Jurassic Park came out in theaters, and I couldn't get enough of it - toys, books, games, trading cards - all of it.

Star Wars Episode I Racer
star_wars__episode_one_racer.jpg

I have no idea why this game got such mediocre reviews. It was a really challenging and intense game, one of my favorite racing games ever. It had over 25 tracks and over 20 racers, and you could customize your racer in the story mode or whatever it was called.

Yoshi's Story
yoshis_story.jpg

This game has a lot of haters because it doesn't live up to the overrated Yoshi's Island. While Yoshi's Island is a better game, Yoshi's Story isn't too shabby either. It's too short, but it has a lot of replayability and the graphics were really amazing for the time.

Sonic Adventure 2 Battle
SonicAdventure2BattleWallpaperSmall.jpg

Maybe my mind was still a bit fried from seeing Sonic on a Nintendo console for the first time, but I really enjoyed this game. The Knuckles/Rouge parts were pretty unbearable, but I thought the Sonic/Shadow sections held up well and even Tails/Robotnik had some good levels. The Chao breeding was a fun diversion and it had a really solid multiplayer mode.

Super Dodgeball Advance

A nice job for a launch title. The game was pretty simplistic, but it had a lot of interesting shots and was a nice diversion that you could pick up and play for a few rounds. You could also customize your team to an extent as well.

Red Steel - The game is uneven, but it looks really pretty -in some spots- and controls really well for a 1st gen Wii FPS. I would rather play Red Steel controls than dual analog, actually.

I shouldn't have walked into this thread.

My pick is Shenmue 1 btw.

This got bad reviews? I thought it did well. I loved it.

It got decent enough scores, I guess, but my pick is Gun.

Had its flaws, but the music, voice acting, atmosphere and ranch missions made up for it. Enjoyable.

Shadowgate 64.

Caratula+Shadowgate+64:+Trials+of+the+Four+Towers.jpg

Something about a creepy old castle and the surrounding land with old school adventure gameplay turns me on.

Anyone know any other games similar to that? Ive been looking for a long time and havent found anything.

It makes me happy to see Dewy's Adventure getting multiple mentions. It was a really charming polished little game, and much better than reviewers generally gave it credit for (the control complaints were total bunk imo). It hurt to see it sink like a brick at retail. My GF preordered a copy and I managed to score an extra plush for myself when we picked up the game because no one gave a damn about it.

Another one that deserves a shout out is NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams. The game initially makes you sit through some genuinely awful cut scenes, but it's surprisingly awesome once you brush the clutter aside and get into the meat of it. The game gets a lot of hate, including here on GAF, but it's mostly unwarranted. I definitely think it's one of those "more than the sum of its parts" experiences. For all its rough edges the title has tons of heart, and by the end I fell in love with it in spite of myself. If they made a sequel that ditched the superfluous elements and focused solely on flying levels like the original NiGHTS it would probably be one of my favorite games this gen.

Dead Rising: Chop 'til you Drop -- This game gets a lot of crap for being an outsourced downport of a fan-favorite next-gen game (I liked the original too), but I really enjoy playing it. Taking down zombies with the RE4 controls and the zany items is a lot of fun, even if another batch pops up out of thin air a few second later. Capcom/TOSE did a good job with the unlockables, too. All of the weapons and costumes are pretty cool, as are the bonus missions in Odd Jobs and Second Amendment. It kind of sucks that this is going to bomb.

holy shit... this game actually released? I remember hearing about how it was suppose to be one of the M2's big games (along with whatever Kenji Eno was making for the system) at launch.

All these years I thought it was vaporware... o_O

This.

I probably rented it like 10 times as a kid. :lol

sonic unleashed, gun valkrie, n3, blue dragon.. depends on your definition of bad, sonic unleashed is probably the only one with truly awful scores.
