Balan Wonderworld - What Happened?

Could be the new NIGHTS, but noooooo. They got lazy and make an AI do the work. What the fuck?

Get your shit together, Yuji Naka. Please

edit: uhh nevermind.was browsing on my phone when it slipped out of my hand and I managed to quote and hit reply at the same time.. :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Like I said before, I don't really care what people say, least of all the video game analysts.

This game will be my release on PS5 and for me it is an interesting and beautiful game

The last time Naka made something significant was the Dreamcast days. His most popular works was when he was a programmer during the Genesis and Saturn days.

Reminds me of the Shenmue guy. Made great stuff back in the day, but that stuff doesn't carry over to modern day expectations.

This video uses Simpsons references A LOT. Outside of the shit posts and humour though it breaks down why the game is just a massive failure. The concept was good but all design choices for the game were bad. Can't think of a demo that can make a game look worse.

Welp, typical youtuber using meme language and forcing bad jokes.
I have no idea if his points are good or not, I couldn't watch an entire minute of it.

Anyway, Balan is an interesting game. I hope Square-Enix gives them a bigger budget next time.
It boggles my mind how people can praise Yooka Layle and A Hat in Time, and at the same time say bad things about this game.
It's literally on par with those games imo and you could even throw Super Lucky Tales in there as well. Like I mentioned in the main thread I don't think it's that bad of a game honestly, it's not perfect and has some rough spots but some people are making it out to be worse than it actually is imo. The lead animation director posted this cool piece of art which makes me kind of wish they had hand drawn animated scenes in the game.

This game might be the lowest rated game I can remember (excluding any weird no-name indie trash). Depending on the platform, the score ranges from 35-50.

The only positive take i saw on this game was from PeteDorr, to me it's like they took the on foot section of Nights with the kids, Elliot and Claris, and make a full game based on that gameplay... awfull idea

Hat in Time is fun and adorable and Balan is the exact opposite of that. I agree about Yooka though.

Money was tight during the Saturn years, I didn't buy very many games for the system, probably the fewest for any console I've ever owned.
I have three main regrets....

Not paying the insane asking price for the ram cart and SF vs. X-Men that my local import shop was charging.
Not stealing the copy of Guardian Heroes that I rented from the local Blockbuster 4 billion times.
And buying Nights. I beat it in one sitting and was like, "wait, that's it?"

They were making a game for an audience they didn't even understand. Kids play Roblox and and Minecraft. They can handle more than one action button. It's silly to be targeting kids (at the expense of the Sega nostalgics who were the main people interested in the title) but they didn't even really get what kids want in a game.

Yah, Poi is so much better than both, even Skylar & Plux is. Also Toree 3D but I guess that's kind of too short to really compare (but its price reflects it so). I wish new 3D platformers were more like any of these. Even Spark the Electric Jester 2 might be better yet they are considered the big ones.

They're lucky they don't really compete with the awesome 2D indie platform games like Spark the Electric Jester and Freedom Planet I guess, those would totally annihilate them even more. Though at least the big 2D stuff like Ori are also very worthwhile games and not posers like the 3D stuff...

Problem is Nights was never good
NiGHTS is only bad if you don't give it time, or you're just terrible at it.

It's not a pick-up and play game like Mario or even Sonic, you have to get used to the gameplay. But once you get the hang of it, it's totally awesome..

I don't understand how someone can play NiGHTS well, and not enjoy it. I'm sorry if that's your case, I really can't relate. I'll just say that you're wrong.

So one company makes shitty descisions and makes a bad game (Mighy No.9). Another company makes the same shitty descisions and makes another bad game (Balan Wonderworld). So what now? I guess just let another company make the same shitty descisions and create another bad game. If you dont learn from past mistakes of other companies you are bound to wake up sooner or later with a lot of shitty descisions and another bad game.

On top of it..... it was meant to be a mobile game first before some people, who didnt know better i guess, wanted them to turn into a mobile game into a platformer and here we start with another shitty descision.

I wonder who the genius was who came up with the idea to hire different companies for different productions stages.... and not let one company do the whole game.

This game was always gonna be dead on arrival after the trash demo they put out. Only the mascots design is worth saving

Imagine making a platformer that's not 60fps on every platform. Even if you can look past the awful artstyle the performance in that video is atrocious.

If this game was released as a random $15 indie game, it would had been better received. But full price, SE, and attaching Naka's name to it like it'll be the rebirth of 1993 platforming games killed it.
