I used to really only go for classic rock (60's, 70's,80's), but within the past year I've been checking out lots of 90's and 00's music. More so 90's.

I've got a beat on most of the bigger bands, but I'd love other GAFfers thoughts.

Rule #1 is that band had to have debuted on or after Jan 1st, 2000. And #2 is that they have to have at least 3 albums/EPs.

So, I've heard alot of bands, and my choice is...

This band gets very little love on GAF, don't know why though.

Probably the most fun music of all time. It's often a mix of hard rock and disco/electronic music. Or either or. And some of the funniest, cleverest lyrics ever. Don't go looking for any emotion or subtlety with this band though, that not Dick Valentine's (main songwriter) thing.

I love every single one of their albums, plus that B-sides/demos collection (which 80% of the songs should've just made it onto a regular album). They have 6 awesome albums, plus one B-sides/Demos Compilation (also awesome). So definitely check them out, they have a bunch of songs on Youtube, most famous of which is "Danger! High Voltage", but they have a billion better songs.

So, whats your choice?

Taking an extremely quick look at my iTunes library, I guess I'd say Wolfmother.

I want to say Coldplay, but apparently they released a couple small albums in '98 and '99.

The New Pornographers, formed in 97 but didn't release anything until late 2000. Their last album was beyond shit but damn their first three are rockin.

Yeah, they'd hit my top 3. Album 4 was just a huge pile of meh. Couple good songs though.

I'd even put their debut as one of the best of all time, with Twin Cinema (the 3rd album) as even better.

My favourite this decade would be Spoon, but they put out 2 albums in the 90s. So I think my pick would be Phoenix. Those frenchies know how to make some catchy pop music.
They've put out 4 albums, all of them bloody good. I'll be listening to these for many years to come.
Here are some tracks for those who are interested (I guess most people are pretty familiar with Wolfgang at this point, but they do have plenty of great stuff on their other albums as well):

United:
Too Young
If I Ever Feel Better
200px-PhoenixAlphabeticalalbumcover.jpg

Alphabetical:
Everything is Everything
200px-It%27s_Never_Been_Like_That.jpg

It's Never Been Like That:
Sometimes in the Fall
Consolation Prizes

Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix:
Love Like A Sunset
1901

Historically, it will be the Animal Collective. For me, it is probably Hair Police, Burning Star Core, Astral Social Club, or Birchville Cat Motel.

Phoenix props to person above me. Weren't they around before the 00's though?

My vote goes to Silversun Pickups;

Their EP, short but sweet.

Probably their best known album. Tons of great stuff here.

Their latest. Personally I think it's right on par with Carnavas.

I like all of their albums all the way from start to finish, which is pretty rare for me.

I don't know if I'd call them my "band of the 00's" (I don't know who I'd pick), but they're easily in my top ten. I love United, and INBLT is really good as well. I think Amadeus is extremely overrated and it's kind of a shame that it's getting a lot more attention than their other albums IMO. INBLT and United are much stronger albums, with much more memorable songs (United especially).

Spoon are really good as well. I just recently got into them.

Oli- their first album United came out in 2000.

Best output this decade imo, but goes against the OP (they had 2 albums in the 90s, so technically they aren't a band of the 00s)

Mastodon - Blood Mountain (2006)

Mastodon - Crack the Skye (2008)

Up there as my band of the decade going by your rules. Though technically they did form in late 1999.

EDIT:

Thought of a couple of others:
- God is an Astronaut. Albums in 02, 05, 07 and 08.
- Explosions in the Sky. Albums in 00, 01, 03, 05, 07.
- Oceansize. Albums in 03, 05, 07. Formed in 1999 though.
- Pelican. Albums in 03, 05, 07 and 09.
- Sleepytime Gorilla Museum. Albums in 01, 04, 07. Formed in 1999.

Well if I can't go with Spoon, I'd go with Iron & Wine (even though it's really just one person, so maybe this doesn't count either).

Some other choices would be:
The National
The Shins
Arcade Fire
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
The New Pornographers
The Black Keys

And others I want to list but can't because they were around in the 90's:
Modest Mouse
Wilco
Low
The White Stripes
Calexico

Friend of mine spent a couple hundred on a trip to go see them and then another 400 because of a speeding ticket in rural GA on the way back. He says it was worth it.

As far as band of the 00s? Mastodon and Silversun Pickups are probably my favorite. I really only like "Forget It In People" by Broken Social Scene but god damn is it an amazing album. Mastodon/SSPU probably mean more since I got into them around the end of high school and a little after respectively. I remember being missed because my Leviathan preorder got fuddled and never got it so I had to reorder it haha. Junior year of high school haha, easier time. Shout out to TV on The Radio as well.

My picks of the 00s. No I'm not going to pick one.

25zkv0m.jpg

Amazing voice. Love the sincerity in his songwriting.

73mo42.jpg

Excellent in concert. Just fun to listen to.

312buz8.jpg

Completely original sound. Love them.

I don't know if you'd agree with me, but I really think Blood Mountain is their weakest. This might be why I love Crack the Skye so much though. Did not to expect it to be as awesome as it is but it might just because Brann had so much input with the lyrics.

I actually think each album is better than the one before it. Don't really care so much for Remission.

I LOVE Crystal Skull and Wolf Is Loose but the other songs just feel too..all over the place. Crack The Skye and Leviathan are definitely my favorites though.

Yeah, they were incredibly consistent this decade (even if Gimme Fiction is a little weaker than the rest ;) ). For me it's a tie between them and Animal Collective.

Yeah I can see where you're coming from. Blood Mountain can be a bit disjointed a times.
