Banjo Kazooie Recomp out now

Animated GIF

Damn that trailer is pure soul, love how they've used the characters with their silly voices to go through the recomp's features.

amazing trailer... N64 is truly the sweet spot for decompile/recompile projects, since it's the one system that is such a mess to emulate faithfully, and the framerate boosts and all are so welcome

Holy cow they did a great job with this trailer. Their writing/dialogue in the beginning of the trailer perfectly mimics what would have been.

Never played it back in the days, tried to play it emulated recently and there's a lot of warts requiring prescription rose-tinted glasses.
Maybe 240fps and high res would make it palatable.

Same here, I never played this originally and have zero nostalgia for the game. But I'll give it a go and see if 240fps ultrawide helps.

Awesome, game is perfect for a recomp. Original game had dips below 20fps in places, and never ran at 30 even.

This pretty much does everything I would want out of one. Definitely will give it a shot.

What does recomp mean exactly with these? Native on pc and not emulated?

I think it means taking the game codes that was meant to run on N64 console (in this case), then convert the codes into language that will work on PC without needing to run another layer of program (emulators).

It's amazing how a 3D game from almost 30 years ago still play and look adequate with some tweaking.
I hope they continue the project with more n64 games.

I tried that jiggies of time but never got back to it. I heard it's pretty good. Sounds like it's time to play it on my deck at 90 FPS, natively!

Also loved the dialog on the trailer. Spot on.

Yes finally more than 30fps and potentially widescreen in the future. Can´t wait to play this.

The Xbox 360/One/Series has a very good port. Of course you had to have an Xbox so that point is kinda moot I'm making.

It has 16:9 widescreen, 60 FPS, 1080p, improved draw distances, jiggies kept on death/re-entry (not optional), proper camera stick support and working stop n swap.

Edit: Notes not Jiggies!

Recomps and decomps are the most exciting things coming in 2026.

Sitting here praying that the Ridge Racer Type 4 project keeps making progress. That game in native widescreen at 60+ FPS would be sublime.

It's still 30fps on Xbox.

I love to see it. Decompilations and recompilations are such a gift!

These and the GOG game preservation program make me hopeful for the future proofing of the art of gaming.

Awesome! am finally playing the OoT port, with the nso 64 controller and a crt filter at 240p; plays amazing at 60 fps. Maybe will replay Banjo next, it's been a while.

Hoping for Sin and Punishment some day!

Is the NSO 64 controller easy to set up for PC?

There's a ridge racer type 4 project? I mean technically you can achieve those things already in duckstation. But a native port that sharpens the ui would be nice.

The excitement I used to feel in my younger years for cool AAA games has been fully replaced by excitement for decomps/recomps.

I hope that someday a decomp tool for ps1 and PS2 come into being like the one that is out for n64.

That would be extremely cool. But I have to say, PS2 emulation is in such a good place right now. I'm playing Need for Speed Underground on PCSX2 now, and it's so great. Built-in patches for things like 60 FPS, 16:9 aspect ratio, modern controls (triggers for accelerate and reverse, etc.). Flawless performance. Amazing CRT shaders for that nostalgic look. It's just so, so good.

Looks fantastic.

And the perfect companion to something like this is due imminently:

I tried it and it's pretty cool. No need for mods; the textures are fine, but the UI could benefit from that texture pack mod—though it's okay for me as it is. Just run banjocompiler.exe and show it where your rom is(and enable analog camera).

What I like most about emulators are the fast forward and save state features. I wish those could be added to projects like this too.

Amazing. Will try to get this working on my deck.
