Barnes and Noble announces new B&W touch screen NOOK

My aunt got a Nook Touch for Christmas and I was helping her set it up today. Very nice reader, as far as look/feel it really seemed pretty much the same as the Kindle (I got the non touch Kindle for my mom).

Touchscreen seems to work well, though I agree with what somebody said above about the physical button design being kind of odd. To be honest, once I started using it I realized I probably would just skip them altogether, though I wouldn't have said that beforehand. The touch screen page turning worked well enough. I also found the physical button usage annoying in that it seemed as though they functioned differently when outside of the book itself. The store seems to have it's on dedicated onscreen navigation and I just seemed to naturally default to that.

Before tonight I would have considered the physical buttons a major advantage. Now, for myself, I really don't think it matters much.

Beyond that, having spent a little bit of time with it it's pretty much a toss up. Nothing really struck me as being considerably better than the Kindle, I just came away thinking they are both great readers and you really can't go wrong with either one.

So far I've encountered a few annoying flaws: The page turn buttons are kind of hard to press and the actual button area is smaller than the line, so a lot of times I'll think my thumb is on the button but it isn't; the tactile feedback is less than satisfactory. The other is that, while you can set which buttons are next page/previous page, that setting only applies inside books, not in menus. Freaking confusing to use the top button for next (which I would prefer) but the bottom for menus. I hope they fix that in firmware.

Surprisingly enough they either need to be broken in or they are different from device to device. I tried my dad's out today which I gave him for Christmas and it doesn't feel anywhere near as good as mine. However, my wife's Nook Touch feels a lot better and she got that recently too. I can't tell if we just broke it in or there are some units that have buttons that just don't feel very good.

See above. I find it still to be a huge factor for me since mine feel and work great. But if I had tried my dad's, I might feel differently.

Aside from the buttons, I actually find the Kindle Touch software to be pretty klunky which surprised me. It feels like they rushed it out rather than fleshing out the touch UI. The Nook Touch UI just feels and looks more polished to me.

Barnes & Noble is running a Mother's Day deal now through May 12th that knocks $20 off both the Nook Simple Touch e-reader and the Nook Color tablet. Of course, you don't have to prove that the purchase is for your mother, so that means that anyone can take advantage of the offer. The discount brings the Nook Simple Touch down to $79 (a 20 percent discount), and the Nook Color only costs $149 with the deal (an 11 percent discount on top of its recently reduced $169 price point). While both of the devices are current models, they're not the newest offered by the bookseller — the Nook Tablet with a faster processor and the nighttime-friendly Nook Simple Touch with Glowlight take those honors. If you're interested, you'll be glad to hear that there's free shipping, but the deal's valid in-store, too.

This is for the non-glow NST. Good deal.

$79 is a damn good deal for the Simple Touch. Love mine to death, but I am most likely going to be weak and get the glowlight one soon. I just need to figure out what to do with my current simple touch model.
Gently used mothers day gift? You got it a year in advance to fill it with the books you love so that you could share them with her. Such forethought. (Unless she's no longer around, then nevermind and sorry)

Retro black and white picture frame? Root it and use it as an impractical tablet? Angry Birds has never been more fun (?) than in slow motion black and white.

My sister got my mom one for Christmas, and my mom has barely used it. I don't think she got her a case though. So I might get her that.

When I got the simple touch last year, I bequeathed the first gen nook to my brother. Maybe I will bequeath this one to his wife.

And when your brother sees how much better the NST is over the nook he'll be primed to receive the NSTGL next year when you upgrade to the NATGLU (Nook Advanced Touch Glow Light Ultra).

Well, the only reason I upgraded was because of how much faster and better the ST was over the 1st gen. But the built in light on the new one means I can use it in the bedroom. The clip on light keeps my wife awake, so I cannot use it. I do sometimes use her Nook Color to read in bed if she isn't.

That makes sense, but you know your going to want to upgrade once they all move up from Pearl. I'll be first in line for that (the amazon virtual line, that is).

I am fine with Pearl. The simple touch was a HUGE upgrade over the 1st gen. Improvement in every single way except for the removable battery. The new light is a big upgrade. I don't see what else they could do bu go Mirasol to make me want to upgrade. Even an increased resolution would not matter much. The current one is fine as is.

We haven't had that big a jump between versions (maybe k1 and k2), so I'm itching for an worthy upgrade.
