Holding out for a $60 million dollar opening weekend with the boost from Father's Day. Kinda shocked in underperformed like this, and I agree with the remarks that Bale should have done the talk show circuit instead of MS. SCIENTOLOGY TOM CRUISE IS SO KAWAI ^_____^v HOLMES

Did anyone catch the 10 min preview that WB showed during Smallville? I didn't, not a Smallville fan, but I have a friend who loves Smallville, is a solid fan of comic books, the movies, etc. and he basically gave up on seeing Batman after the 10 min preview. He has not interest now, although he said that if I dug it, and his brother who is going to go with me liked it, he may change his mind. Wat the preview bad or what?

The preview was pretty cool.

Well duh. That's why I said I thought instead of I think. If Batman can't make at least it's production budget back by next week, it's so fucked.

When did you think this? Well before Star Wars III was out? I'm not trying to bash, but the chances have always been extreeeeeemely slim of that happening.

Yes, I made that prediction after Star Wars huge opening night. Idiot.

I made that prediction early on, because I didn't predict the rave reviews coming out of the gate. I don't think anyone did.

Pg-13 is the worst thing to happen to the movie industry EVER.

How do you figure? Explain. It's not like the theater won't let kids under 13 in, it's just a suggestion for parents to think about when taking the kids to see that film. Hardly a terrible thing.

The 10 minute preview awesome.

I remember watching that and then all hype for watching Episode III that vaporised instantly. After the preview I wanted to watch Batman Begins the following day not Star Wars.

Not for that reason. PG-13 has a bigger potential audience, and lots of movies that would have been R are cut to get PG-13.

I'll see this movie for the third time today with at least 8 people I convinced to go and see it with me. I think I'm promoting this film better than Katie Holmes did, I just want my sequel with the same team at the helm please WB

man, its a shame its not a huge success, cause it deserves it, but i'm not quite ready to call it a bomb. $60 million or so opening wouldn't be so bad, would it? Its obvioiusly out of Spiderman's territory, but anyone got any figures to compare to other comic openings, like Hulk and the two Xmen films so far? Plus, WB seems to have been really behind this project from the get go, so they might be understanding that it had an uphill climb to get back the audience that they and Schumacher drove away. I don't think they will jump in and hire McGee to direct and Ashton Kutcher to replace Bale. or anything drastic like that. The one thing i can see them doing is forcing Nolan's hand to hire a big name as the Joker, which is a problem cause i can't really see any bigname actors that can handle the role, imo. I guess Robin WIlliams cause he has history with Nolan (Insomnia) might now be a possibility, but he's not really a bankable AAA movie star, and i can't see him as Joker. Jim Carrey maybe? Something like this could definately drive Nolan away, which could in turn drive Bale away, at which point they might as well shut this bitch down and leave Begins as a standalone. Even if it only makes $1 though, we finally got our perfect Batman film, and no matter what dumb moves the execs make from here on out, they can't change that!

Whats the appeal of super hero movies overseas?

I can see BB hitting around 120 million in USA. If it hit like another 220 million or so overseas that would be good. The Batman franchise needs to be rebuilt from the ground up practically after the drek that had been shoved down our throats. A sequel will certainly do more business if it is as good as Begins.

And that's half the problem. :lol
Well, I should be a little careful as I haven't seen Begins yet actually. But I really don't have much interest in the character and series. So I'm not too hyped about seeing it, I'll just catch it on TV like I did with Spiderman. :P

I only enjoy West's Batman because it simply was so far from the actual thing, yet so hilarious. :lol

My mom wanted me to take my dad to see Star Wars Episode III for Father's Day tomorrow with my sisters. I'm totally vetoing and taking us to see Batman instead. Fuck that Jedi shit - go Bats!

I'm calling my Dad who lives 1500miles away this instant to tell him to see it tomorrow.. I'll probably see it again early next week.

Batman's more appropriate anyway. Do it!

I'm not sure why people are calling this a bomb. A bomb is Alexander or Battlefield Earth. Should this be performing better? Yes, but is it performing horribly? No. Sensationally declaring this a bomb is certainly not going to help it any.

At this point its doing better than any other Batman movie. I guess its not a bomb, its still not the best tho.

You have to take inflation into account. Batman was first released way back in '89, and its weekend take was, at the time, the biggest of all time IIRC. It was the biggest hit of that year too. Begins looks like its going to fall in line with the rest of them though. Making less than Forever, but probably as much as Returns and more than B&R.

i agree. And i think WB was expecting this (at least thats what im hoping) kind of performace. Someone in another forum mentioned that the reason you didn't see as much merchandising as something like Spiderman, or any kind of fast food tie ins or any shit like that is that WB knew this would be a more 'adult' series. Hopefully they adjusted their expectations accordingly.

I just told my Dad to go and see the movie with me hell I even offered to pay his ticket and what does he say?

"I'll wait for FF thanks" wtf? I've already said this Batman is different still he doesn't want to go and not only that I'm paying for his ticket anyway that's his loss. Man my Dad is going to hell for this How do I save him?:(

How the fuck does FF have any kind of hype. It looks so freaking dumb in the commercials.

Well its still 20 million ahead of its nearest competition without factoring in inflation. I dont know if you can call it a bomb yet. It will definitly have more positive word of mouth than any other Batman movie and probably more repeat viewings.

I've seen no ads at all and I'm back in the UK. It just came out and I'm seeing it tomorrow. Perhaps Schumaccher's work (it was him who did Batman Forever right?) might have tainted the franchise if what is said in this thread is true.

Yeah, you can't really call a movie that brings in $50 million it's opening weekend a bomb. Even though it will most likely fail to hit $200 million domestically, DVD sales will most likely be huge.

It's certainly going to make enough to warrant a sequel. I just hope WB doesn't get any bright ideas about making even more money and screwing with the creative team already in place. They produced a near perfect film, the problem is the previous movies really took a big shit into everyones mouth and detered them from going to see Begins at the BO.

It's really sad Fantastic Four is going to be a pretty big hit. A lot of people I know are really excited for it and I just can't fathom why. The movie looks horrible.

i don't know about that. The 1st Batman was one of those boxoffice phenomenons, like Jaws and Star Wars. It had great word of mouth and repeat viewership. I remember going to view it the 2nd weekend and the lines were STILL around the block, every showing sold out. I didn't even get to see it til the 4th weekend because my parents wouldn't wait in those longass lines. But that movie had so much going for it. TONS of hype, a huge star (Nicholson) and a theme (the dark, gothic batman) that nobody had seen before. And it had been 25 years since the Batman tv series, which despite being campy, was actually well liked. For Begins, on the other hand, its been just 8 years since Batman and Robin, and that movie is widely considered a gigantic turd and left a bad taste in the public's mouth. It would have been crazy for WB to expect Begins to do that kind of numbers (with inflation, obviously) this year.

i will be fucking pissed if a sequel isn't made OR if a sequel is made with a new team. i want to see
joker
:(

plus the cast in BB was top notch. i bet the sequel would be the same

You've failed us... I think giving your father a lobotomy might change his mind... mwuhahaha!

You know, if anything - this is just a good way to measure the rest of the general public's opinion towards how these corporations treat their property - errr. . . characters.

Yes, you read that right comic nerds. This is a clear indication that unlike your eager to be pleased asses, the rest of the populace will not put up with spades of bullshit (shitty comics, shitty movies, shitty shity bang bang) before a company delivers a quality product.

Underscoring how completely fucking stupid "rebooting" a tired ass franchise is, and emphasizing the value of finite tales.

It's one of those rare instances where group thinking prevails.

Fucking hell. I knew that the Schumacher films had soured people on Batman, but I figured that people would at least give it one more shot.

Hearing the way some people are opposed to seeing the new Batman makes you think that Schumacher took a giant shit on their mothers' graves and then stuck plastic bags on the heads of their children.

:(

The television ads should say "Don't worry, Schumacher didn't direct this one."

The two showings of the FF trailer I've been at received a huge audience response. The only possible verdict is that people have awful, awful taste, and unfortunately that's not anything new. This is why most Hollywood films suck, not so much because Hollywood sucks, but because audiences actually desire it.

They are marketing the movie to the right demographic look at the trailer and compare it to BB you'll see the difference FF looks "fun", light and entertaining whereas BB looks dark, almost like a thriller and not like a superhero film like FF does. People see a Comic film and they quickly associate it with being fun and entertaining that's why Hulk flopped(although it has its shares of flaws that BB doesn't have) and that's why it looks BB is on the same river

People also have to take in account that major publications bash BB for not being fun and taking itself too seriously I think those kind of complains scare a lot of people away

Not to take anything away from Morgan Freeman, Gary Oldman, Katie Holmes, Michael Caine, and Christian Bale (Ken Watanabe kicks ass too), but a few of the other Batman's seem to have higher profile castmembers -- especially Batman Forever. Whether that had an impact on the box office take, I don't know (after all, those shitty Schumacher films followed Burton's already established movie franchise) but it's interesting to consider.

You haven't even seen the movie, so shut up. Your entire argument is stupid considering how successful Spidey and several other comic franchises are.
