Battle Chasers: Nightwar (ex-Vigil, Joe Mad, PC/Max, PS4/XB1 stretch) Kickstarter

Yea. Around 1995 I started getting into writers. I still enjoyed the art (I really enjoyed Joe Mad's Deadpool miniseries run), but wanted more bang for my buck. Again. Enjoyed the art. I remember grabbing The Art of Wildstorm (pretty sure I have it somewhere) and loving the different styles.

When Art & Story come together though, that's something else entirely.

Also backed. Looks amazing! Visually, this game is gorgeous in every way.

I checked on Amazon for a compendium or graphic novel of all the Battle Chaser comics, but it's so fucking expensive. Would be nice to have a physical version.

I'm into Joe Mad comics strictly for his art, which I think is amazing. Darksiders, both of them, were great games, and this looks to follow suit. Combine my favorite genre with one of my favorite artists, and it's a no Brainer.

Couldn't care less about the story in this or the original Battlechasers. This all means more Joe Mad art for me.

Yuuuuup...

But even the style of game has me hyped... to me this feels much more like diablo meets FFVI with some some roguelike thrown in.

The Overall Story, with loot hunting, and replaying dungeons on varying difficulties... means i get to spend tons of time looking at it. im beyond hyped.

I think the teams will end up being larger than weve seen so far... but thats just me speculating. I can imagine getting Monikas hechmen Bengus and Akiman (yes Joe named them after old capcom artists... Bengus and Akiman... lol)

Plus the story is set up of trying to finally find Aramus... that alone has me interested.

aren't Bengus and Akiman
dead in the comics? Akiman is dead in issue 10 that didn't get released but there are sketch of issue 10 that show him killed.
I think the games must have been after issue 9 at least since the team are together

I think the story setup is them learning about Aramus story, not necessarily about their quest to find Aramus, which is why the storytelling is focused on lore finding, we'll be mainly looking for text log about Aramus missing story. that's why they say this is more of a sidestory.

Definitely, it's just not something I might expect from most comics. Always awesome if it does happen, though.

This looks fantastic. Backed for $27. Hopefully the PS4 is the first stretch goal because that's where I want to play it.

Akiman being killed in 10 is likely... however not set in stone... since we may get revision to 10 rather than what we've seen

I also wouldnt count out Bengus and Akiman just yet since we dont know what they are. (reanimated corpses? animated puppets? Not Human?)

But man... how cool is this dude!!!!

As for Aramus...they set out to find out what happened to him.

The Story
The Grey Line. An impenetrable wall of mist hovering over the West Waters, stretching endless from north to south, and towering from ocean crest to dark sky above.

Nothing has ever come from, or survived entering, the historic monolith. The great hero Aramus felt a calling from the Grey Line and crossed, despite the dangers. And like countless warriors, vagabonds, fugitives and fortune seekers before him, never returned. Now, his daughter Gully and her unlikely band of adventurers venture into the mist to uncover her father’s mission.

Along the way they'll meet friend and foe alike while piecing together the silent history of the Grey Line, and the dark secrets within.

Battle Chasers was one of inspirations that got me in to art, so backing this was a no-brainer for me! On top of that, Joe Mad has great taste in JRPGs if his tweets are anything to go by.

I'll be backing this for sure and looking into Battle Chasers, I've never heard of it but I love Joe Mad's art.
I would recommend against it. It's only 9 issues and was never finished (and that was in 2001!). I'm honestly surprised people are trusting a Joe Mad project with their money, to be honest. Even if the game does look really cool.

Youre surprised people trust him after that the ONE book he never finished 15 years ago... and COUNTLESS finished (and on time even!!!!) projects since then?

Yeah i cant trust him because he never finished Darksiders or Darksiders 2 (2 AAA games within 3 years of each other? What a fucking Slacker!!!)... he never finished Avenging Spiderman 1, 2 and 3, Savage Wolverine 6, 7 or 8, and Inhuman 1, 2 and 3... WHERE ARE THEY?! did they even come out?! (yes...in fact they all released on time)

People crucify him because he didnt finish ONE BOOK 15 years ago? (dont even mention the whole reason he stopped working on BC was to get into VIDEO GAME development.)

Hes put out countless comics, and video games since then... but because he didnt finish battle chasers "ZOMG DONT TRUST HIM!!!"

The whole "Joe MAd never finishes anything" is actually getting quite tired... and the only ones who keep bringing it up, do so to be negative...because even the smallest amount of research would show just how much work hes finished, put out, and on time. lol.

Looks fucking amazing. If I had money on me at the moment, I would have backed it (and it would be my first) Games like these are the ones I am happy that Kickstarters exists. God knows how many times I have rolled my eyes at some of the projects but this one looks magnificent.

Take it easy bro.
Joe Mad worked on Darksiders 1 and 2, and that's reason enough for me to trust him on this game.
Besides this is among the many dream games he likely wanted to make what with him being a video game and manga fan.

They lost me a bit with the random dungeons. I much prefer they take the time to design memorable layouts with carefully placed enemies, secrets and loot. In fact, that has always been one of the signature features from JRPGs. Regardless, this is still very interesting to me.

I'll echo the sentiment, in a nicer way, that since Battlechasers when Joe Mad has worked on other projects either as a lead or under the awning of another company he has rarely if ever delayed anything. So I don't particularly feel any worry about him being able to deliver as the times he has now far outweigh the times he hasn't by a factor of "some high number" to one.

On a separate note, I fully admit that I picked up Battlechasers #1 because of Red Monika. I was like...12 or something. Blame my enabling father.

That said, I eagerly look forward to her incarnation in this game.

While I don't doubt that we'll get to the finish line, it slowed down considerably already.

From the presentation to the people involved to the more than solid media coverage I'd have guessed that this is the next 1-2m $ kickstarter easily.

Never read Battle Chasers, I'm not that into comics neither, but I love the idea and the artstyle of this game. Darksiders war great too, so this has my support. I hope they find success in it!

Take it easy bro.

lol. but bro...I was being facetious.

The whole point being... people keep bringing up the whole, BC was never finished, like Mad has never worked on or finished anything else... ever. its more than a little annoying.

It's like you stopped paying attention after issue 9 of Battlechasers. Should do some research because you're just sounding ignorant right now trying to be so negative.

Damn, not even a stretch goal? That's amazing news.

Its from the new update:

Officially Announcing PS4 and Xbox One Support!

By incredibly popular demand, we are taking Xbox One and PS4 out of stretch goals and making them a core part of the campaign.

Anyone who has pledged will be given a choice of available platforms via a survey as we get closer to launch, so if you've already supported us, you're all set! Otherwise, help spread the word so everyone on the console fence knows they'll be able to sit on their couch and wander the Battle Chasers: Nightwar world!

There are others we'd like to support as well, but those need to stay in the stretch goal section. Let's get this thing funded and see how many platforms we can reach!

They had me until "randomly generated dungeons".

Too bad. Never been a fan of those. I'd rather want dungeons that has been crafted with care.

Be patient. Now that the next three issues are coming, I would expect a new trade after those come out en ompassing everything. Probably won't be until 2017, but it will happen.

And yeah, that's awesome news that xb1 and PS4 aren't stretch goals anymore! I violated my "dont fund unless there is a console version" rule yesterday because I am so stoked for this and figured it would hit that goal anyway. Glad I dont have to worry about that.

Cool that they are making the console goals part of the main campaign but then where is the money for that coming from? Out of their own pockets/their angel investor I guess? That stuff still costs money & time to port.

they're a small team, I can understand if they don't have the manpower to make really huge game with lots of unique handcrafted dungeon. I just hope this game is a success so they can make a more ambitious game for the next one.

I had the same initial reaction, then it dawned on me that JRPG's universally (with only a very very few exceptions) have incredibly lazy, poorly thought out dungeons.

You're right, I did stop paying attention. Still, I don't think he should be left off the hook for that, personally.

They lost me a bit with the random dungeons.
Oh, I somehow missed that... that's disappointing.

Stop playing modern JRPGs and play more old-school ones. :)

Yeah, I'm with everyone on dissappointing randomly generated dungeons but (shrugs) .... It's Joe Mad and Battlechasers. Own all of the old comic issues except for #9 so I guess I'm in for the $70 version.

I don't play modern JRPG's.

Oldschool JRPG's tend to have very basic mazes with no puzzles or other events. It's just a series of corridors with random encounters. There are very few exceptions to this rule (Lufia 2 for example).

Well, I mean, if he hadn't done anything in the interim, I'd agree. But I've gotten several comic series, several arcs, two awesome games, and tons of art from the guy.

All is forgiven from me.

Of course, all I care about is more awesome art.

Same... i mean... we always knew he would return to Battle Chasers.. and now that hes correcting THE ONE THING people were having a fit over... whats there to be upset about?! lol.

More art... That new Tier... i really really want one of those sketches...

Same... But I can't justify it. Especially with holidays right around the corner. 😢

Maybe not that old-school haha. Late 16-bit and early-to-mid 32-bit era is the sweet spot I'd say.

Have they said if this game will have random encounters, or will the enemies appear in the world like in Paper Mario or Earthbound?
