Battlefront Death Star DLC Impressions

While the new Battle Stations mode is a little lite on content, boy do they nail the details.

Especially on Phase 2, which is a "best of" Death Star locations. Hangar, conference room, vader/obiwan duel hallway, detention center.

But the Trench Run, holy moly was I grinning. The fight takes place over the surface of the death star, rebel fighters vs imperial fighters. The game will randomly assign 3 rebel fighters to do a trench run.

It's up to the players to dive into the trench and fly to the end. No cutscenes, no loading.

I had a great moment yesterday. I noticed that 2 of the 3 players assigned for the trench had been destroyed, leaving only 1 left. There was nothing keeping me from going into the trench myself...so I flew in behind my rebel ally in the trench, shot down the two TIEs on his tail and followed him down the trench.

I was getting shot from behind, so I popped my shield power, juking back and forth to take the hits and protect the leader. We reached the end, the leader fired, and cut to the DS blowing up, we win the mission.

I really really should have saved the clip...couldn't have worked out more perfect.
my first trench run on the rebel side was very similar experience haha. So good.

Played a bit last night. I haven't figured out how the level rotation works - do the rebels have to win Phase 1 and Phase 2 to get to Phase 3? Kept going back to Phase 1 :-(

Battle Station is three phases, and the rebels have to win all three. The playlist also has Fighter Squadron on both the new space maps, and Blast on the interior maps. You may have gone from a failed Battle Station run to a Fighter Squadron match on the same Star Destroyer map.

Season pass is on sale for 35% off on the US/Canadian PSN Store starting today. Going to use my 20% coupon off coupon from the Play promotion as well.

Too much focus on flight combat and not enough maps to justify the price. I was a season pass holder so the new additions are nice but for $15 definitely pass. The two new characters chewy and bossk are fuck awesome.

A disappointment.

Heres my nickel 'n dime in a video form

The DLC for the SW:Battlefront have felt like a cheap afterthought. Bespin has its woes and I'll talk about my disappointment with it on the video too. Death Star DLC takes the cake. To sum it up: it lacks the occasion. What is one of the things that anyone knows about Star Wars? Yup. The Death Star. The fact that theres two in the mainline movies is a footnote. "THEY THINK ITS A MOON! BUT ITS NOT!"

Death Star DLC is a weak attempt on content. It doesn't improve on anything seen in the base game and only presents itself with a fruitless punchline: "3 phased Death Star map". Nothing is connected. It doesn't matter who wins what phase. The next rolls on like in the regular multiplayer roulette. I'm a fairly easygoing chap and I try to look things from every perspective. However, I honestly can't say that anyone should get the DLC, or even the Season Pass. Not even if its something like 5 bucks. The base game is fun and I do recommend anyone to try it because there have been great sales and discounts on it. If you get the DLC at the same price, sure. The crap mixes well, but the gameplay is on the base game levels. In every possible way.

Bah. Now I'm grumpy.

Time to go watch some Kung Fu to cheer myself up. Project A it is.

Sorry, but this isn't true? If the rebels lose the first or second phase, the match ends. Now, the way the phases work and the consequences for failing could do with some tweaking, but what you're saying here is simply not true.

Played a few games last night, its ok. Its fun for a bit, but then you start noticing all the little problems.

Like the first part for the death star mission has you flying in space in fighters dogfighting and attacking/defending star destroyers, to soften the defenses of the death star. Very cool!

But then you realize its really hard to tell where the heck enemy fighters are, that the environment is way more staticy than it should be - you can shoot at asteroids and space debris, but it does absolutely nothing - that the mechanics for shooting at the star destroyer "core parts" are wonky as hell and not really fun, and just a lot more. Its obvious they just tried to shoe horn in a few ideas without changing too much about the game, instead of fine tuning a few ideas and making them work no matter how much extra effort it might take.

The death star ground map isn't bad, I thought Bespin was much better but its still fun enough. Lot of verticality and all the little touches like the doors that whoosh open super fast or the garbage dump areas, probably a hidden monster in there!

The trench run part is REALLY fun, I enjoyed that the most and would want to play that all the time probably. Unfortunately for now its locked behind two parts you have to slog through first.

All in all I enjoyed the time I played but after an hour I was kinda bored and don't really feel like jumping back in right away, so not exactly a resounding endorsement. I wouldn't recommend paying $50 for the season pass to play it, I think most people will play for an hour or two a week and then wanna go do something else. Maybe a $20-30 its a decent deal, especially factoring in Bespin which is a far superior DLC imo.

I literally bought this day before yesterday at full price. Anyone have luck with Sony support in getting them to price match in situations like this? It was literally at like 9:00 PM PST when I bought it and they put it on sale at Midnight.

Hmm, I spent few hours with the game and I didn't notice anything spectacular as both sides won and lost. I guess I was just so underwhelmed by all of it that I didn't notice. It might explain why I didn't get to play the Star Destroyer phase in most games. Though, it would make sense that its the first phase, is it? So... I don't know what happened here.
