[In response to MWO]
It sucked, didn't it? That can burn some people, too. And the premises of both games are quite different.

Not trying to sound like a doom and gloom guy, though lol

It was actually pretty solid in Beta and at launch. It had the basics down pretty solidly and showed a lot of promise for the future.

Unfortunately, the developers decided to change several things for the worse (3rd person, ghost heating, and the scummy sale of increasingly beneficial premium 'Mechs). They failed to deliver on many aspects they had originally promised (namely the persistent IS War, the core premise of the game), and introduced several negative aspects which they'd promised not to include from the beginning. This was equivalent to spitting in the faces of long-time fans and early backers as they desperately tried to appeal to the casual masses. As result, the game suffered heavily.

Info from the second Twitch stream:
  • Been in pre-production for a few months, working on core gameplay loops at the moment. Development timespan is estimated to be 18 months
  • Hoping for the game to be free movement, no grids. Prototyping different approaches: free, hexes, grids, etc.
  • Melee and "Death From Above" will be in the game (Hatchetman, etc.)
  • High level of interaction with environments. Bushes being crushed as you walk over them, blowing up buildings, etc. Deformable terrain is unlikely
  • Atmospheric environments. Fire, smoke, water, etc. Inferno rounds are likely in the game
  • Will be true to the spirit of the tabletop game, but will be its own beast. "As deep or deeper than the original Battletech game"
  • A lot of depth. Mech classes, maybe even different chassis. Training your merc pilots, etc.
  • Tactical in terms of complexity and using a lot of information to your advantage. Like XCOM, satisfying 30 minutes of tactical gameplay rather than needing hours for a satisfying experience
  • Between matches, you upgrade mechs, take on contracts. No overworld, exploration, etc. outside of missions
  • No cooperative modes, could appear in a Battletech sequel
  • Resource management and logistics will be a big part of the game, revolving around the salvage-based economy. Paying salaries, paying repairs, for interstellar travel, etc. Would love to have contract negotiations between houses as part of the larger campaign
  • One of the stretch goals will be legendary mechwarriors and mechs
  • Want to make it as authentic a Battletech story/experience as possible, steeped in lore. Unclear if it will be canon
  • Choices revolve more about mission choices and decisions on the battlefield, rather than dialogue. Choosing to take on a rival house, secret secondary objectives adjacent to your main objectives, etc.
  • Combined arms/aerospace units will be one of the stretch goals. Jumpships and the like
  • Origin stories and deeper merc group customization will be a stretch goal, building on the expanded campaign
  • Mech aesthetic customization: color schemes, banner/emblem creator, etc.
  • Takes between third and fourth Secession Wars
  • Skirmish will let you choose objectives, choose where enemies spawn, select special modifiers. No map editor
  • Devs are really excited to explore the lore and universe in a more impactful way compared to other Battletech games, and being able to have gameplay with the kind of depth that's true to the tabletop game (compared to real-time strategy)
  • Will be available on Steam, Humble, GOG, and DRM-free
  • Paypal backing option from day one if you can't back through Kickstarter

See...reading that list..I have the same misty eyes that I had when I backed MWO.

But these guys won't fail us like IGP/PGI/Microsoft did. They're proven fighters, winners.

Not sure what the status of the dougram designs is at the moment, but that new concept art clearly has a bigfoot or roundface from the show. That's a good sign.

These are the ones I really like. If the game can fulfill all these promises, I'll be very impressed. I'm especially curious what they're going to do with the combat system.

  • One of the stretch goals will be legendary mechwarriors and mechs
I'm a bit mixed on this one. I don't like the most of the big name Mechwarriors during the 3025 period although some of the non-Mechwarriors are fairly good. However, it would be neat to see the original Yen-Lo-Wang.

3rd person was always in MechWarrior games and I think the way they did it in MWO is good (you can see the camera drone flying above the mech).

Ghost heat is actually a good concept, if you want to keep this level of customisation (which I didn't since I much prefer the one from MW4) then you need some kind of system to prevent people from boating 4 ppcs with pinpoint accuracy and firing them all at once.

Persistent IS conflict is in the game fyi.

Two more pieces from the preview of the Kickstarter video yesterday:

I freakin' love the pilots.

Anywho, I'm preparing the thread for the Kickstarter. Does anyone have any good, informative ideas for the title of it? How about

Battletech Kickstarter [Harebrained Schemes, Turnbased 'Mech Strategy]

or

Battletech Kickstarter [Harebrained Schemes, turnbased Mechcommander]

or anything else? Should I include the goal in the title? E.g. "$1.8M goal"

If you are looking to attract GAFers to the thread, then a front mission reference might be warranted.

I don't think a Front Mission comparison is apt. You will give the wrong impression.
Well, maybe. I mean, this is not going to be that sort of pilot/computer skill thing with the same sort of rock/paper/scissors F/I/P weapon typing or any of that. I am still reluctant to give the impression that it'll be that sort of SRPG

I'd go with

Battletech Kickstarter [Harebrained] - For the Liao, Liao price of 1.85M C-Bills

But I like bad jokes a lot.

Edit: Although it might be better to focus on the initial funding goal of 250K.

You could always make the X-Com allusion with something like "You got Mechwarrior in my X-Com".

Makes it pretty clear the game will be X-Com like in that it is turn-based, tactical and doesn't have "outside of mission" exporation or anything.

Battletech Kickstarter [Harebrained Schemes, Katherine Steiner did Nothing Wrong]

If you are looking to attract GAFers to the thread, then a front mission reference might be warranted.

I'm a little sad "Battletech by HareBrained Schemes" isn't enough to get more people hyped.

1) I always use |KS| over "Kickstarter" (Battletech |KS|...) People know what it means and it allows for more descriptive text in the title

2) I'd make several things clear in the title. From Harebrained, mechs, and XCOM-esque tactical rather than tabletop

3) I don't think the goal needed in the title. It's more important to use the space for descriptions that will attract attention

I make a lot of Kickstarter threads

I may just be boring and go for a conventional title with no jokes in it. It's not an OT, but just an informative thing on the Kickstarter itself.

GAF isn't a PC-heavy audience and the last time the series had a significant mindshare was back in 2003.

The mech designs are using the updated MWO ones right? The pictures make it look like they are and really, no problem with that. They are damn good updates.

So "Battletech |KS| Harebrained Schemes, Turnbased 'Mech Strategy, "?

What else? "Mechs-COM" like Sinatar suggested :lol

Yep

I'd likely go with something like:
Battletech |KS| Turn-based tactical mech combat from Harebrained Studios (Shadowrun)

Or

Battletech |KS| Mechwarriors + Harebrained = turn-based tactical mech combat

Edit: Actually these puns are SO BAD they are actually embarrassing. Let's pretend I didn't make them.

Seconding More_Badass's "Battletech |KS| Turn-based tactical mech combat from Harebrained Studios (Shadowrun)"

Not familiar with Front Mission. I think the "mech" would be sufficient for people's interest, no?

Front mission is an SRPG series with customizable mechs set on a future earth. IMO it's one of the best SRPG series around, mechanically. Shame Square never localized 5 and instead localized the abomination that is Front Mission Evolved to test the waters...

That being said, there aren't that many "Mech" fans on GAF in general, honestly.

28 minutes.

I'll be ready.

Yea but it's getting excited for the beginning of development of a game at least 18 months away.

Yeah true. But HBS has got that track record with their KSes and 18 months is nothing compared to the alternative of never getting this kind of mech game again.
