Beast's Fury, 2D fighter on Kickstarter (Trigger Warning: Furries)

First guy's stance is lol, but overall this doesn't look terrible. Shark and gator are fuckin awesome, and I'm down for Benny the hype dog.

That said, hopefully they reach their goal, but I wouldn't pledge for a demo.

Waifus are a stretch goal.

No dice! Anything past what's on a Draenei and you've lost me.

I don't mind games with anthropomorphic mammals in them, just this devianart shit style i don't like. Post 55 has a video that looks awesome.
Ok I get it now.

Bloody Roar is ok but this is too specific to that Deviant Art style. And now I also understand why Dust got so much shit from so many people. Not saying I agree, I just understand.

This Kickstarter is a money pit, development wise.

As for the art style, not all the characters mesh. The Shark and Croc are awesome (and the horse fits, I guess) but the rest are too cartoony, and have a lack of detail. I can certainly get what people are saying in the dA'ness of it.

Those in here just because of "ew furries" though: C'mon already. There is weird shit out there, but this is not that. Try to pay attention to what's actually there and not what's in your head.

I prefer my anthropomorphic characters to not have huge tits thx

The fact that they already misjudged the funding is a big problem. Unless they've got people experienced at the money side of high quality hand-drawn animation on board, I'm not too sure they'll get it right this time. And it's still essentially funding a big demo.

Some of the animations are quit nice, and a few of the characters look interesting (not the bird lady though, no avian should have bazongas that big).

And in unconstructive comments: That lion(?) guy's victory animation looks like he just realized he took a shit in his pants and has to go handle that quickly.

Oh god furries. So gross omg. Disgusting. I'd never play this. Furries are gross. You believe me right? No way I'd play that shit. Horrible, yeah? Like, ew. Dont look at me I dont like this shit. We clear on that? Good.

Now I don't have to hide!

The animation is great, but furries are just weird.

It would be more interesting if they were realistic looking like overgrowth or something, but it's always got to be this cartoon fursona shit.

Looks cool. What's with some of the reactions? Anthromorphic animals seems to be love or hate around here.

Sexualize Anthropomorphic creates a fear of the unknown furry fetish that might lurk inside of us.
And many of us rather not unlock or look at that fear, and would avoid that situation all together.
But yeah...The art design is full of furry fetish from my pov.

Was gonna post something along these lines lol.

I find it funny though that there are those on GAF willing to buy Japanese games with with oversexualized teenage girls or cute scantly dressed girls, but shy away from this.

Personally if this ends up being a good fighter I'll give it a play.

FWIW, I think what they're asking for in total is fairly appropriate or even cheap for what they're doing. I quoted a big infodump post by the lead animator admitting that the initial funds were in part/mostly consumed by figuring out their production pipeline was way more expensive than they expected it to be.

Skullgirls, which appears to functionally have a similar style of production to this one, had an IGG that ended up raising over $800k for 5 characters, with one of them being an edit of an existing one. And the team has put the record that this amount essentially excludes them being paid beyond life support.

I agree that this group sorely needs some management and better PR if they want to court more public funding/support, but there is nothing particularly scammy about the KS itself. It's just, like you said, not framed as a good sell.

I think the cost is not as cheap as you assume it to be. They said that they spent the majority of their $21000 on Vincent and partly on Don. They need an additional $45,000 in order to finish the two characters and get a demo out. They also note explicitly that this is because they need additional animators to work full time on the characters. That means close to $66,000 will have been spent on finishing two characters. Skullgirls cost $150,000 for one DLC character. That makes it seem cheap, right? It would, if the money for Skullgirls was only needed for the animators, like in Beast's Fury. What is the cost for that specifically?

According to them: $30,000: Animation and Clean-up Contracting

I think they are just bad at managing their money. And the results aren't looking good. I wouldn't compare Skullgirls to this mess at all. I don't think they are trying to scam, although while we are on the topic, yeah, some of the stuff they are doing does seem scammy. But I think it is just them being too hopeful rather than try to con people. For example:

-- There isn't a reward tier for buying the game this time around, why is that?

There isn't one because we're not offering a full game this time around. We're actually focusing merely on cutting production time down so we stop stagnating the game's release. We're trying to get a finished demo post EVOLUTION 2014 to be able to show off at future fighting game events, and without the funding we're going to take even longer. So we're focusing solely on this demo release. However, people who donated before when we were running the Indiegogo campaign will still receive what they donated for, that hasn't changed.

They can't guarantee any of that. Because both of their initial goals are for demos and then they are going to go shopping for publishers. What if they can't find one? Are they going to continue working on this in their spare time, aiming for a Winter 2027 release?

I'm not comparing this to SG because the level of quality and organization is on the same level--it's not--but because the method of animation and how it's produced in the end is similar.

Also that Kotaku article is being overly modest, as was the Skullgirls IGG, in presenting the cost of making one character. Squigly, the character in that article, already had a notable portion of her animation work already completed, which is why they were able to present her at a lower projected cost for the breakdown.

But I generally agree with the rest of what you said. I don't think they have the intent to be shady about what they're offering--it's just not well-thought-through, and therefore a poor investment.

All the characters that look terrible do so in part to the fact they have human hair ontop on animal fur. Makes no sense, looks stupid. Biggest sin in anthropomophizing characters is adding completely unnecessary human traits like hair and overally human figures.

Ah, I wasn't aware of Squigly's development. Even though I am not funding this game due to the reasons I brought up earlier, it would be a shame if that loan shark character isn't used. He is badass.

I have nothing against anthropomorphic characters in my games. That shark shows that it could be a fun little fighting game if realised correctly, no matter how the characters look like. I do not see the problem if it's a solid game with good visuals. However, I'm not so sure this game will ever be completed. That's my issue with this project, a lack of trust. My lack of trust, to be precise.

Also, those pandering (boob bird) stretch goals creep me out a bit. Not gonna lie, those are not exactly my cup of tea. I can deal, but still...

why are some people really don't like furries ? Didn't they like Disney's movies or Conker bad Fur day ?
The only thing that approaches furry levels of creep in Disney movies is that one scene where Nahla laying down, getting ready for some Simba lovin'. And conker's not furry either. There's anthro characters... Then there's... Furry. The definition is kinda like how that one judge defined porn; I can't define it but I know it when I see it.

The only way to top this amount of faux internet disgust with a game concept is if someone announces a Nickelback RPG.

Monster. The dude behind making it all work is going through some major shit right now. Once he gets right I hope he comes back to finish what he started on the new version. But the game itself has gone through hell and back with all the drama attached to it. Even with Ancient Cline which he's working on finishing.

The old version for OG Monster V1.11 is still out there if you can find it. And if not then playing DragonBlast is an option too.

Beast's Fury looks pretty cool. Here's hoping they get what they need.

I would fund that with a signed T-shirt of How you remind me as a reward tier :( .

Also these guys seem to have some money managing troubles.

My homie Rex with dat Power Instinct/Matrimelee avatar.

Remind me what DragonBlast is please? I think I've heard about it before but I don't know anything about it.

That's how I always feel. The anime-esque extremely stylish hair is a fairly common trait of the deviantart style anthropomorphic animals. That and highly visible busts.

Arthur (PBS) the fighting game?

Not enough flash animation.

I've got no opinion way or the other on 'Furries'. I quite like some of those character designs, although the big beasts on the females disturb me a little. But it's budgetary matters which concern me most; it looks like they cannot budget for shit and given they're not even making a full game, what's the incentive for backing this again?

Holy fucking shit, that's amazing.

I know the animator actually since I did business with him before. I picked up on some of the conversations he had with the guy who's making/funding this. He's not a budgeting genius, no. I can appreciate the ambition, but putting your money into this is pretty risky all things considered.

I really hate how GAF becomes a bunch of whiny babies whenever the subject of furries comes up. If some dude wants to draw a humanoid rabbit with giant tits and an even bigger dick then that's their prerogative. I thought America was a free country?

Guess Walt Disney and Hanna Barberra were bunch of sicko's too although to be fair most cartoon animals don't have the anime hair or sexualized design that furry is known for. I think really this is people's internal insecurities coming out on display. Don't like it, don't watch it.

I guess people should be ashamed for watching Thundercats and Rescue Rangers as well or hell TMNT but they don't. Conversely those designs are a different from what we call your typical furry which itself is not bad but Rule 34 in any form irks me

Lol who's the whiny baby exactly?

Lol who's the whiny baby exactly?

I was exaggerating. If not in this thread then another we had some time back.

Also, generally breasts are put on females as a visual short hand for saying, "This is a girl"
Other tertiary sexual characteristics may also be included like eyelashes and wider hips
Do you even animate bro? However, I will agree that the design philosophy is more DOA style tantalization

There are a few legitimate reasons to dislike the furry fandom, but even the seediest parts of it aren't really worth scorn, they're just different or lower quality or whatever other inconsequential digs people want to make. I do find the fandom a little bit annoying on average, but I don't write anything associated to it off by default. I'm this way for a lot of stuff. I tend not to hate DA style illustration for instance, although I find a lot of it low quality anyways.

In this case, the reason I don't like this project isn't that I have something against furries, it's that I don't think the project is financially sound.

In my experience, furry even beats MLP and anime as the general punchingbag of the internet. So it's nobody in particular, but the crowd in general just "whining" about the existence of these fandoms.

So the animator moved from 24 frames a second (way too much) to 30 frames a second (way too fucking much) and never looked into the basics of why sprite-based fighters paired back to semi-continuous idles of 6-8 frames over 1.2 seconds, or lower.

I mean you can just look up the shambles that became the Street Fighter 2 HD port to see the folly of trying to up frames in sprites. The animator's discussion doesn't read like someone who, when faced with a crisis, asked anybody outside of the company or looked around. I mean, maybe they did, but it READS like they didn't.

That Shark design is boss though, rest of the characters should have kept his style but you see the difference with the Fox in jeans chick who has been drawn in a rather generic deviantart style. A human with fur as opposed to how we (or say Disney) would imagine a typical humanoid cartoon fox, all lanky and short. Another issue is that these guys are writing checks their hands can't cash. Over-budget and under-talented

Not just furry really, you should check some of the threads on games with anime type art, this is the general response for the first 3-4 pages:

Yeah exactly, the only thing going for this project is that one shark design.

That's hilarious

ALL AMERICA MAKES IS CRAPPY SUPERHERO SHIT!! AAA!
WHY IS THERE NO GOOD MOVIE LIKE BLADE RUNNER ANYMORE?
NOBODY UNDERSTANDS!! WAA!

You never hear complaints like this though do you?

EDIT:

We generally use animals as visual shorthand for character traits. Cunning like a fox, proud like a lion, slimy as a weasel and the humanoid designs should reflect that.
