Beats by Dr. Dre cans... worth it?

I got a pair of the solo hds for Christmas, they're fine, but personally I wouldn't pay that sort of money for it. The build quality is really nice, but like that guy in like the second post said, anything that isn't a heavy bassline is mediocre.

Once I Compared the Solos to my ath-m50 and the difference is staggering. The sound in the solos sounds a lot more muffled and muddy. They are terrible.

Except any good pair of 'phones will have as good or better bass, and it's very easy to find better bass for cheaper. And also have good highs and mids.

I like the way they look and I don't even go outdoors in them.

I may purchase a cheaper but 'better' quality pair to see what all the fuss is about.

my Sony MDR-V700DJ for 70$ sound great. I have never used beats by dre, but i assure you the sound on them doesnt warrant the price..unless you wear headphones 24/7.

Also i could not stand wearing those in public..i just use my earbuds.....i dont need those honkin things hangin on my head

No. no.

No.

There are dozens of headphones out there that will sound better for a somewhat to much cheaper price. If I see someone wearing them it means they either don't care about sound quality and so they bought it as an accessory (which is fine, I actually do like how they look) or that they're supremely easily taken in by marketing.

It's a lot of money so I don't really get it. It's like buying a TV without doing any research.

I am getting the Audio Technica ATH-M50's in white soon. Much better price, excellent reviews.

I can personally vouch for the black ones. Fwiw, I'm a casual audiophile: enough of an audiophile to look for older editions of CDs when the remastered ones sound worse, but not enough of an audiophile to get hung up on waveforms. I do a lot of research before I buy a pair of headphones.

There's only one good thing about Beats, and that's the aesthetics. The sound is unbalanced, they're way overpriced, they break easily. Until recently, they were made in partnership with Monster Cable, a snake-oil company infamous for their overpriced A/V cables. I guarantee you Dre himself doesn't use Beats in the studio.

Also, avoid Bose. Like Beats, they're pure marketing BS.

Nope, those Sonys have a very timid low end.

I agree. They're studio standards, but they're a little too neutral to be pleasant sounding. Quite harsh sounding, frankly. They're mainly meant for vocal work. They were my primary headphones before the ATH-M50, and the ATH was a big improvement.

No. The headphones thread has a pretty good argument why not.

boom, this.

I recently purchased a laptop for my mom, they came with beats by dre. No, not headphones, but beats speakers in the actual laptop. Ridiculous, I would not have purchased it had i known this. I feel bad for supporting such a product.

I've been very happy with the Grado's that the headphones thread recommended to me last year.

Heck no to the Audio Technica, unless you wanna have highs that are ridiculously sharp. Stay with a good Sennheiser and be done.
They are still right new to me... in a drawer... lurking, waiting.

ATH-M50 is the best and safest buy for the money. Can be purchased from Amazon for a little more than $100 and sound fantastic.

I just got the Wireless Beats, I love them. They produce better sound than anything I every used before but then again I'm not an audiophile so I don't invest much into headphones. If I didn't get these for free, I damn sure wouldn't have bought them ($280) because like I said, I'm not an audiophile.

You can get better headphones for less than half the price.

Post what types of music you're into, what qualities you're looking for (bass, accuracy, etc.), what features you're looking for (detachable cord, closed vs. open, easy to drive) and people here can help you pinpoint a decent set of cans in your price range.

NOPE.
As has been said a lot, you can get much, much better headphones for half the price. Don't buy them.
The bass is overpowering and muddy as hell, the mids and high are very meh.

Absolutely, don't listen to the haters man... they just can't afford excellence.

I recommend looking into Bose as an alternative, as well, they're sublime. Anyone who tells you otherwise is a jealous poor.

I have a pair of the earphones and the bass overwhelms everything else. So if the headphones are anything like that, then no.

My little brother wanted them for his sixteenth birthday. I brought him to Best Buy with my pair of Sennheisers and made him listen to Beats and then mine. He said mine were better, but he still wanted Beats. Fucking kids.

^^lol

My brother and I both have a pair of audio-technica ATH-M50 headphones.

For $100-ish they're a good deal. There's absolutely no reason to spend 250+ more dollars on something like Bose or Beats that are more about name than about quality.

Beats headphones are a fashion item with passable audio quality, but they come at a premium. Audiophiles may be somewhat intimidating, but ask suggestions and price ranges and you'll get some very solid opinions and recommendations from them.

No, both are fine actually.
By what standards are the highs on the M50 "fine"??? I have auditioned a ton of stuff but something like the highs on that thing is uniquely offensive and makes stuff like cymbal crashes borderline painful. Combine with a slightly sharp source and there is no end to the offense.

Disclaimer: I am very sensitive to highs, so ymmv

I have the M50s and Sony V6s at home and a set of 7506s I use at work...and personally find myself using the Sonys more than the the M50. I just replaced the pads on the V6 with a set of Beyerdynamic EDT250 velour pads and I can notice the improvement in sound and comfort to an already great-sounding pair of cans. So much I'm getting another set of pads for the 7506s as well.

It's obviously not the best of the best but the V6s and a set of those Beyerdynamic pads (like, around $75-80 total? Or $55 for the V6s alone?) are a much, much, much, better value and sound compared to a set of Studio Beats at almost $300. Get the 7506 if you want to flaunt that 'Professional' label to your Beats-wearing friends, yo.

depends, it's no secret that they are ridiculously overpriced but it also overlaps with fashion. personally, i don't think they are worth the price, especially with that bass.

I'd much rather have a pair of V-Moda M80s over Beats.
using them right now, they are wonderful.

Are you gonna be walking around town with them on OP? Coz people here are gonna recommend some fat, chunky indoor cans.

Check out the Senny HD25s, they sound wicked and just as importantly they look good yet smallish and discrete and they don't look like you've just stepped away from a PC gaming session.

Beats are terrible. My preferred brand is Grado but unmodified they lack some low down base in the entry models.
