Aerie in Baldur's Gate 2 was like LiveJournal incarnate. What's great is that the game is self aware enough to have other party members constantly call her out on her whining.
Some of the mean things you could say to her were also pretty good. I did like her bickering with Jaheira and calling her out on some of her shit.

Ya'll posting Hope in this thread really don't get his circumstances at all. Annoying? That's on you. Unjustified whining? Hell no, dude goes through a lot of shit. Not everyone becomes quiet, emotionally distant and introverted after repeated trauma. Loads of people get angry, lash out, and angst. Guy's 14 years old. He recovers pretty well 70% of the way through the game. He has the biggest character development across XIII, not to mention the entirety of XIII-2 and LR. It's also painfully obvious who hasn't played the later 2 games in the series ITT.
The worst part about Edge Maverick is that his friends treat him like the second coming of Jesus the entire game despite his numerous shortcomings.

I loved Mr. Onasi but good god, his issues were just the worst. Constantly nagging me even if I was doing my best to help him, freaking out over the smallest things. I'd still take him over sanctimonious Bastilla though.
I liked him a lot better than I liked Atton Rand.
Amazingly Tidus is NOT the worst I've ever seen....

The fact that Kaz even gets out of bed in the morning makes him one of the least whiny characters in gaming, in my book. Dude limps his ass around and keeps fighting when pretty much anyone else would be throwing bedpans at nurses at best.
Hell, even as much as I hate Huey, I can't say he doesn't have plenty of reasons to be whining as much as he does.

i actually thought kaz was the best character in mgsV, that performance by robin atkins downes was incredible
reading some of these examples i am thinking some don't see a difference between a character that is being whiny for the sake of being whiny and a character who is being Whiny due to justifiable reasons .
Hope from FF13 is a prime example of the latter :
He is a innocent kid of 14 years old who got shoved on a train with his mother to be deported /executed , gets in the middle of a warzone , sees his mother die right in front of him and then gets cursed with a fate worse than death hanging above his head .
Yeah , i would be a whiny bitch in his place too .

Please let me know where I said anything about him being realistic. It's a video game, I can expect a character to go through shit and not be whiny about it the whole game, otherwise 99% of games have worse characters than Hope. He's got his delusional blaming of Snow for Nora's death the whole game. "Because he's a kid" is a terrible excuse to act like he has the emotional fortitude of an 5 year old the whole game(he's basically on par with Vanille). Clementine and Ellie are examples of kids that I like, and much more in line with how I would expect a kid to act, especially if the writers want me to give a shit about the character.

Miller suddenly becoming one of the most important characters in the plot is one of the worst things about Peace Walker and Phantom Pain. Such an unlikable character, and not in the good way like Ocelot.
I think people would also be more sympathetic to Hope if his mother didn't die in such an absurd/stupid manner.
