Being Black in Japan (or Asia in general)

I haven't been to Japan, but I've met a few tourists from there. And from my experiences and questioning, the black man is god in Japan. The girls that have been with black guys prefer them, and the ones that haven't yet want to, but are shy. Go forth, my brother.

:lol

...unless you're one of those anti-hip hop types. In which case, your perceived cool will evaporate quickly.

You're young, so if you're thinking about it then you definitely should do it. Experience something new. Don't second-guess it, unless it's a third world country. And wherever you go, it's probably not a bad idea to network with a few natives of similar interests before you get there. Social networking websites are your help in this case.

If this was directed at me then I am far from young.... I'm 38, wish I was 28...

A buddy of mine did a term abroad there, he's about 6'7, black, and about the funniest guy on earth.

He apparently got more tail in 3 months then most people get in their entire lives. On the other hand, his host family was basically scared for (of?) him and wouldn't let him go out at night.

better question: How do the Japanese treat brown people?
I spent a couple of weeks there last year and never felt like I was being looked at or judged in any way. From your manner of dress and grooming, it'll probably be apparent that you're American or British anyway. Just be normal and polite and the people will treat you accordingly. I gave up my seat on the subway to this old lady and she bowed to me like 50 times. I don't know much about the clubbing scene, though, because I was doing mostly touristy stuff with my girlfriend and friends. Just learn a few phrases in Japanese and I'm sure you'll be fine. I'm going back as soon as I can.

I don't mean to derail or anything, but how would a white Canadian be treated/thought of by the Japanese and other Asian communities?

My brother in law was treated fairly well there, no horror stories to speak of from when he visited.

I'm not entirely sure if it's true but I heard some Japanese aren't to fond of Non-American Blacks, particually those who are Nigerian (Not saying you're Nigerian). Can anyone expand on this?
bobby ologun is nigerian, I wonder how japanese feel about him. He's a naturalized citizen now though.

Pretty much nobody knows much about your country or where it is, unless you're in Hong Kong in which case everybody has a cousin in Toronto and/or Vancouver. You'll just be another generic white guy.

hmm I have to grow 5 inches and become black in the next 6 months then.

Hmm... I guess instead of going to Japan, I'll just pay some astronomical fee to have a square watermelon flown to me.

Well, you'll need a guarantor if you're traveling on your own. Unless, you're doing the group tour thingy. And in general, you'll probably have a bit of problem with immigration compared to someone coming from US, UK, Australia, etc. As for the people within, obviously they vary from person to person. As usual, expect to find racist in every country no matter where you go.

That is so unbelievably true.:lol

Believe it or not, Japanese people really won't care who you are, considering they have their own lives that don't revolve around staring at foreigners.

I think it's more like Japanese people don't know what to think of black people. Being separated from the realities of racism in North America, they undoubtedly hear stories about what North Americans say and do to black people and what the racists think of them, and because they don't live in North America, they are not able to discern what is the truth and what isn't, what is or isn't appropriate. Black people are just a great big mystery to Asian people, and that leads to confusion in many and fear in some. It's not exactly racism, as they don't HATE you, but are just afraid of something they have absolutely no understanding of.

Someone correct me if I'm off-base.

I must re-iterate how true this is. I have met a lot of very confused Japanese people who have no idea how to survive in Canadian culture. Mostly because they're expecting to be "westernized" and Canada doesn't have the same melting-pot prerogative as the US does. Which almost seems to disappoint them.

Could be. Nigerian names look sometimes like japanese names, for example "Nishizawa" or "Amunike"

For some reason there are Nigerian populations around Japan, Tokyo in particular. As you might imagine many of them are caught up in scams, others work trying to persistantly hustle people into clubs. I try to avoid them, they especially want stupid douchey forgeiners looking for night clubs and bars. Some of these establishments don't have posted menus and you wind up paying $20 for a beer. They relentlessly hit on girls too, you really feel bad for some of their victims because they follow them around and harrass them. Other times I just see them just staring at people in a threatening manner. I could definately see why the Japanese aren't too fond of them.

It should be noted that much of what they do extends into perceptions of the black race in general. Older people will more likely generalize farther and paint all black people in a negative light, many younger people like black hip-hop culture from the US (or at least have exposure of some sort) and are much more open. Lately, with the Obama loving I'd imagine perceptions are a lot more positive.
