Best 3D Platformer of 1998? Vote inside!

Klonoa was a huge surprise to me at the time, thought it would be some generic 4/10 game but it's probably the best platformer that I played in the psx gen

It's like people are begging for the "what's a 3d platformer?" discussion to begin.

Really? Klonoa? Yoshi's Story?

Now on the subject:

Banjo-Kazooie

I want to say Spyro since it's definitely more my type of gameplay, but damned if I didn't 100% Banjo and not Spyro.

It's a weird feeling to say you played a good game that made you never want to play that type of game again (collection heavy 3-d platformers have been a no-no for me since then). Really makes me say Banjo was basically a case of being there when all I wanted was a Mario 64 sequel.

It's so weird that missed out on this whole era of early 3D games. I only had a NES and SNES up until the Dreamcast came out, so I was still playing Mega Man and Super Mario World when these were hot. My first 3D platformer was Sonic Adventure

I guess it depends what you want out of platformer, but I don't find the actual platforming in Banjo (or pretty much any collect-a-thon) that great. One of the reasons I prefer the Galaxies and 3D World to 64. which has gret mechanics but very basic platforming.

I understand what you mean and kinda agree with it, but while the level layouts might not always favor platforming segments in Mario 64, I'd recommend taking a look at a speedrun to get a feel for how that "basic platforming" transforms when in the hands of a master.
