Best audience reactions to game reveals

What's your beef?

What's with the crazy reaction to the Zelda game?

You sort of have to understand the context of what was going on during that period.

You see, we were coming off the back of Wind Waker which turned a lot of people off with its art style. People were wanting a full blown hardcore sequel to Ocarina of Time, especially after seeing that infamous Gamecube tech demo, and Twilight Princess's reveal trailer made it look just like that at the time.

What's with the crazy reaction to the Zelda game?

Miyamoto had (up that point) said we wouldn't be seeing a more realistic Zelda for a while and that future games would look similar to Windwaker. So when they announced Twilight Princess (though it didn't have the name yet) and it looked much more like a next-gen version of Ocarina of Time instead of another Windwaker, people flipped their shit.

I think Miyamoto even said something like, "Yes, I'm a liar." after the reveal.

I saw this live. I hope to see another reaction like this some day.

You did... that same night. Seriously one of the hypest E3s I've ever seen, and I don't really even care much about any of the things people were freaking out over personally.

I think the Kingdom Hearts 3 reveal was just so telling of how much we kh fans were wary of Square's shenanigans in regards to the series. No one wanted to believe a damn thing when the reveal trailer opened up. We needed to see 3 because we were so used to the fractions, decimals, remixes, and spinoffs.

My brother was just like that. We were watching together and he saw KH, got excited for a split second, leaned back thinking it was some remake or collection and he slowly started getting more nervous and quiet until the big III came and he leapt up and shook the monitor in excitement.

Wich is funny when the newest Zeldas look like strange combinations of the WW art style with realistic proportions

It's a reaction to an announcement of a Kickstarter... Their reaction which is akin to "we have reverted to being 8-year olds whose parents are taking us to Toys R Us" is over the announcement of a fucking Kickstarter.

Not to mention it's still fucking Shenmue. Ew.

What a terrible, horrible, very bad, no good post on each and every account.

This is legit the first time I've ever felt compelled to use the ignore list, lol.

Not audience, but I loved Itagaki's reaction to the Kinect. Dude just straight up walked out.

IGN said:
For me, the highlight of the evening was watching Ninja Gaiden creator Tomonobu Itagaki walk into the event in his white robe, taking in the scene behind his traditional sunglasses. He looked around a few times, stood quietly for a few moments and then turned around and left.

i miss nintendo crowd reactions

closest you can find is big crowds watching directs at the NYC store or suchlike

Nothing will beat Twilight Princess. You have to put it in context. Nintendo was at a real low point in terms of sales and mindshare, but the 2004 conference seemed like they were on the cusp of changing these fortunes. The focus on mature titles (that sure did last long), the DS reveal, and they topped it off with Twilight Princess. It was heavily rumored that the next Zelda would be Wind Waker 2. Wind Waker had its fans at launch, but it was still pretty divisive and many wanted a realistic aesthetic. It really seemed like Nintendo pulled themselves up.

And then nothing bad happened to Nintendo ever again.

You're free to like a bad thing. But if you're going to attempt to convince me that that ghost building plank shit in Shenmue 2 was anything but the absolute hottest of garbage on-top of a pretty boring game, I'd say you're a crazy person. And Shenmue 2 was the better of the two.

Dude. Its a thread about audience reactions to a game reveal. People are excited for Shenmue. Get over it.

Going back to the very first E3 from 1995... Sony's "$299" announcement. It was the first nail in the coffin for Sega and the Saturn, unfortunately.

E3 1996 Mario 64 Demo
- This wasn't a reveal, as Mario 64 was in the press a lot at this point. But a neat reaction of onlookers being wowed by Mario 64.

E3 1998 Prey Tech Demo
- This one was demoed for one person, so no huge audience reaction. But it was great, even though this build of the game was ultimately cancelled and Prey was shelved until 2005. This is more of a personal favorite, TBH.

E3 2000 Metal Gear Solid 2 reveal. This was big for its time.

E3 2003 Half-Life 2 reveal
- I can't find an audience reaction, but people were losing their shit over this one. The G-Man facial tech demo blew peoples minds.

E3 2004 Zelda Twilight Princess Reveal - Miyamoto jumps out on stage with a master sword and shield, audience goes crazy.

E3 2005 Nintendo Wii reveal - Probably the most polarizing console reveal ever. People on message boards were questioning Nintendo's insanity at this point.

E3 2012 Prey 2 reveal
- yes again, not the biggest reaction of 2012, but a very interesting one as the game went into limbo afterwards. The second time a Prey game gets announced at E3 and then canceled a year latter.

Thanks for putting this together! What a different world that was. Insane. The Mario 64 reveal was so incredibly odd and laid back, it's amazing where we are now.

And my moment would be actually being in the theater for Sony's 2016 E3 Press Conference, it was one of the highlights of my life. Such a great experience and professional show!
