The mother f'n winner!

Greg Dulli > *

Goin to see The Twilight Singers at Glasgow King Tuts July 7th, cannae wait!

Good call on Fugazi as well, criminially underrated, and just consistently high quality output. The intro to Reclamation (Steady Diet of Nothing) may be one of the finest pieces of music ever IMHO... of course there's also the whole of Kill Taker - although not one of the most 'technically' best drummers, Brendan Canty is amazing in terms of originality :D

This is actually a tough question. Radiohead put out one sub-par, one good and one great album in the 90's. Nirvana was essentially done in '94. Soundgarden imploded at the end of the 90's. Smashing Pumpkins suck.

Pearl Jam was consistently very good, though. So **** it, Pearl Jam.

Brendan is pretty good, I agree.

Any good from their first album (and it was very good) was undone by their second, perhaps the worst overall record released in that decade.

I'll toss a vote to Fugazi as well. More influential than either of the OP's bands, more original than those bands, and just better output than those bands.

Fugazi. Hugely influential, both musically and culturaly.

I realize I'm waaay in the minority..but I think Pearl Jam is one of the most over-rated bands on the planet.

You can't beat Ween for variety. I've only been listening to them heavily for like a week, but they definitely deserve a mention in this thread.

Wow. I have to strongly dissagree with that. I enjoy it a whole lot.

Nirvana and Smashing Pumpkins.

Nevermind + In Utero + Incestide = **** you. I think they would've gone on to do more great things if they had the chance.

Gish + Siamese Dream + Mellon Collie & The Infinie Sadness + Pisces Iscariot + The Aeroplane Flies High = **** you. They probably would've kept their streak going for longer, too, if they hadn't lost Jimmy Chamerlin in '97 and done the awful, bad-drum-machine-addled Adore and the "but we can still rock!" Machina albums.

Lots of awesome music in the 90s, though. It was exciting that a lot of good, relevant, artistically-viable albums were making it to the mainstream. Doesn't happen often these days. :( Agree with a lot of the nominations in the thread.

Fugazi is a great choice. And so is Ween.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds had a number of great albums during the 90s such as Murder Ballads and Let Love In.

Sonic Youth released Goo, Dirty and Washing Machine in the 90s. They deserve some love too.

I love the Seeds, and they're amazingly consistent, but I don't immediately think of them when I think of 90s music.

I think SY's best period was on the cusp of the 90s. They're a late 80s-early 90s band. When I think of the best band of a decade, I want a band who rocked throughout the decade. . .that's why I can't nominate Nirvana. They didn't even rock halfway through the decade.

So in the spirit of the thread, WTF happened to popular rock music AFTER the 90's? It used to be that bands with unique styles and more talented playing (and better compositions) were the shit. This day and time almost every single rock band on the radio sounds like Nickelback or Creed or something.

So what the hell happened?

As for Green Day... well, I enjoyed some of their stuff, but Billy Joe's psuedo accent can be really ****ing grating on the ears after awhile.

And Nirvana still rules.

I forgot to vote on the original question... I'd have to say Green Day. I dont really like Green Day now, but Dookie was kind of a coming of age album for me. I listened to the cd waaaaay to much.

Even though I wouldn't put any of their albums in my top 10 of the 90s.....I would say Stereolab is up there as one of the best

Transient Random Bursts
Emperor Tomato Ketchup
Mars Audiac Quintet
Dots and Loops

Whoa, serious contender, all those albums ****ing rock.
Tooootally. And what an awesome evolution, starting with the New Wave freakout of "Bursts" and capping off with the electro-postrock of Dots and Loops. Talk about a streak!

And hey, Cobra Phases came out in 99, and it wasn't bad, either. No "Emperor Tomato Ketchup," but some awesome shit on it.

Nirvana gets my vote. I was an angry young lad in the 90's just graduated highschool. Great decade for me I basically did nothing but snowboard, drugs, and women for most of it. Really tore shit up. Snowboarding in the early 90's was a whole different animal then it is today. Nirvana just fit perfectly into wear my head was at the time. Green Day was great too though definatly second runner up.

You people don't know what good music is. Smashing Pumpkins? Nirvana? Creed?

This is how you rock:

Oops! I'm sorry!

I forgot to tell you that Morrisey totally sucks!

It's my fault, really.

I dunno, after The Smiths, it's pretty dicey with the Moz, for me. Sry. :(

Edit: Johnnyboy: WTF band is that supposed to be, anyway? That looks suspiciously like Pink Floyd or something, of which I heartily disapprove. Edit 2: LOL looked at the filename of the JPG. Phuck that shit!

Call me a sucker, but my fave Sonic Youth is the mellowed out 00's records. I have a hard time listening to 80s production, though. (Ruins The Pixies for me, unfortunately).

Denying Nirvana their spot in the 90s Music Throne on the basis of only lasting for 4 years of the 90s is kinda wimpy, too. They might as well have lasted the whole decade with all the losers trying to recreate the "grunge" sound that followed them.

ADORE ROX!
MACHINA 2 + MACHINA LIVE SHOW FTW!
(but yes Machina 1 is their weakest album, I expect the upcoming album to be 10x better)

Every time I hear a Velvet Revolver song I get pissed off because it reminds me of the goodness that was, but will never again be, STP... well, and the fact that Weiland's vocals can't keep Velvet Revolver from being kinda crappy.
