Best Basketball games out there?

Wii u version is 30 fps. Looks terrible. Plus the online is garbage on it.

Why would they do that? Oo Oh well, I guess I'll have to use the DS3. S'all good, considering, it's not like the DS3's horrible... it's just slightly less than ideal. Bah, bullshit.

Btw, are there any Mario Strikers equivalent this gen, for basketball?

It was pretty limited, but I had a lot of fun with it between bouts of NBA Jam, Micro Machines & Mortal Kombat ;)

You mean a basketball game where blatantly illegal violent hits* go hand-in-hand with rapid arcade pace, ala Mario Strikers, Arch Rivals, NHL Hitz or real NFL Blitz? Don't think so.

* I mean, looking back at Mario Strikers, the Toads are Zidane's apprentices, for fuck's sake.

I like my basketball games a little on the "arcadey" side but still 5 on 5.
My all time favorites are:

NBA Live 2003 - PS2/PC
NBA 2K7 - PS3/360

I still own and play these if I'm in the mood for a hoops game.

NBA Street Vol. 2 is the best arcade basketball game ever made.
This is a true statement. I also played a lot of V3 and Homecourt, though I'm under no allusions that those were great games - just needed my fix. Really hope the series returns someday.

As far as the 2K series goes, 2K11 and 2K12 were the peak of this previous generation for me. 11 for the Jordan scenarios, 12 for the classic teams and player scenarios.

NBA Hangtime on the N64 might be my favorite, and it's arcade perfect. It was NBA Jam on the Genesis before that, but damn...NBA Hangtime is just so damn great on the N64. The SNES version is good, but it just can't compare. I personally like NBA Jam way more than the 16-bit versions of NBA Hangtime.

Oh, yeah. Hangtime for N64-- aside from some sound quality issues due to compression-- is the real deal. When I (re-) added an N64 to my retro library last year, Hangtime was the first game I hunted down. The animations are spot-on and the experience is only missing a coin slot. The PlayStation port has significant animation problems but has a superior sound package.

As for Jam/TE, I think that the 16-bit versions are a bit better than their 32-bit counterparts. Sure, it's cool to see legit player scaling like in the coin-op, but there's too much of a focus on shoving/physical play and the actual game of basketball kind of gets lost in the scuffle (if you'll pardon the wordplay). The Genesis version of Jam is preferable due to battery backup and other minor additions over the SNES version, but I prefer TE on the SNES.

NBA ELITE featuring none other then the man him self, Jesus.

But if you really want to spice it up, go with NBA LIVE 14.

I haven't really loved the 2K series since the demise of the Dreamcast. It's just too complicated for my tastes.

NBA Street Volume 2 was fantastic and easily available but it's not the best arcade basketball game. Run and Gun doesn't get enough love. It's too bad it was never made available outside of arcades.

I had it on Saturn. It was on Saturn and ps1 under the name slam n jam feAturing magic and Kareem I think. And it was absolutely fantastic.

Not quiet the same game but seems inspired by Run and Gun. NBA Give n Go on the SNES was Konami's official effort but it looks like a step in between Run and Gun and Run and Gun 2 from a visual standpoint. I never cared for the sequel in the arcades and haven't tried the SNES version (the pace of the game seems really slow). I'd still love a port of the original. I wish I hadn't gotten rid of my 4-player cabinet.

As a kid I had NBA Jam and Kobe Bryant's NBA Courtside. Both were fun. Though when Dreamcast came out and I played NBA 2K it hooked me.

Arcade Basketball games are great for pick up and play, but don't have a ton of depth to them (other than possibly the Street series). For me, my favorite 2k was 2k11 with the Jordan challenges. Felt like the perfect way to get a campaign mode, and by then they had polished the engine to essential perfection.

2k14 on next gen is a good start, with the gameplay being really good, albeit with some AI problems. Outside of gameplay, though, the experience is shoddy with microtransactions and generally unpolished menus and user interface. Still a blast to play the game, though.

I like Tecmo Super NBA for SNES. You could probably get a cart and a system for less than the cost of NBA 2K14.

Wish we would get less serious basketball games this gen. I still play a lot of Jam and NBA 2k14. But Ballers takes the cake for my favorite.

Ballers was dope. Unexpectedly so. Had a lot of fun playing this with friends.

NBA2K14 is my most played PS4 game. Yes, it's frustrating at the beginning and feels as though it was designed to persuade players into buying in-game currency. Yes, the game modes feel rushed and shallow. Yes, online is often an unplayable mess. Yes, the UI is hot garbage.

And yet, in spite of the flaws and overall rushed nature of the package, the on-court gameplay is just plain fun, even sublime at times. I can't get enough of My Career/Player mode; I'm currently on my second career as a Slashing SG and plan on creating an SF of some sort afterward. It's quite easy to accumulate VC now through a combination of regular gameplay, My GM grinding, and the mobile companion app, so it's more than possible to begin a fresh career at any position with a decent OVR. Of course, I don't recommend My GM grinding until you've gone through a season the hard way.

NBA Homecourt such a missed opportunity. We desperately need a new NBA Street, or at least NBA Street Vol. 2 HD.

I've said this awhile, but the next company that makes a good casual NBA, MLB or NFl game is going to hit paydirt. People want these games and the mainline series have become far too sim-ey.

I was flicking through Twitch the other day and saw NBA 2K and the thing that surprised me most was everyone was playing vertical view. The last time I played a basketball game it was side view and seemed perfectly playable, so why the change?

It seems the same with the other US Sport games, NHL & Madden. What's wrong with good old Fifa side scrolling view?

I remember putting way too many hours into w/e nba street was on psp.

nba 2k games are great stuff but every new one seems to fix something, but break something else... like I can't seem to dunk or shoot mid range or 3's at all in 2k14... yet ai are getting 4x ally oop combos.

None.

Go to a gym and play real life basketball.

2k14 is scripted garbage that is a $60 game that plays like a free to play one.

NBA 2K14 for PS4/Xbox One (PC version is not the same game!)
NBA Jam: On Fire Edition for 360/PS3

A couple notes about NBA Jam:
- On Fire Edition enables switching players by default... I think it's shitty and shouldn't have been default, so turn that off if you want the original NBA Jam experience
- the Disc version of NBA Jam has a campaign mode which is pretty neat and isn't available with On Fire Edition, so you might want to hunt that down.

So, NBA 2K 11, 12 or 13?

14 is still too expensive, and I don't care about the teams being updated and that kind of thing, so... which is one is the best from a gameplay perspective? 11, 12 or 13?
