Best classic Castlevania clones?

I recently replayed SotN, which prompted me to replay III, IV and Rondo and I find myself hungry for more. But since Bloodlines continues to be absent from anywhere but the Genesis and because EU PSN doesn't have Chronicles for some reason, I need something else!

I am already aware and have already played Odallus (which is a fucking masterpiece and pretty much second only to Rondo), and though I wouldn't mind playing it again, I'd rather do so when the Vita version comes out as I think this game deserves all the support it can get, it's one of the most underappreciated indie gems ever.

What else is out there, gaf?

I love the Castlevania titles on DS. Finished both Dawn of Sorrow and Portrait of Ruin.

DoS used the stylus more than PoR, so be prepared for some stylus controls with DoS, but overall, excellent games. Amazing music as well.

If you are more after classic Castlevania then something like Volgarr the Viking might scratch that itch.

Rusty for the PC 98 is pretty good. A little bit clunky, but still well done and enjoyable.

I've heard so much about this game, and always wanted to try it out.

What's the name of that one Japanese Doujin (fanmade) game that plays like SotN/Metroidvania?

I was going to suggest the DS games as well if you have one. You'd also be able to play the GBA ones as well.

I always wonder why there aren't more Classivania clones anywhere, but sweet Jesus Odallus looks awesome what system is it?

CLASSIC Vanias, not modern Vanias, man.

And yes, the DS Vanias are indeed awesome! I've played all 2D vanias except Chronicles and Bloodlines already, though.

Holy Diver is really cool, but also pretty damn hard.

Oooh! Dio inspired name and everything, seems yummy! JP only though... damnit.

If you are more after classic Castlevania then something like Volgarr the Viking might scratch that itch.

I've been meaning to check that game out for a while, even if it isn't exactly what I'm looking for right now, it might just be the right time to do it...

Ninja Gaiden NES, completely piggy backs off the castlevania format, hell the life bars are identical.

I always though NG was supposed to be more like Shinobi than Castlevania, but then again I have never actually played it. Duly noted.

On a similar note, is Ninja Five-O ever getting a VC release? It desperately needs one...

Oh this looks nice, would love to have it on Vita :o

It's coming sometime this year, it's just a matter of time.
And yes, it is fantastic.

On the NES, I loved 8 Eyes. It's a Castlevania clone that even looks like Castlevania, but I always liked it better, maybe since it does Mega Man style level selection.

Ninja Gaiden is a pretty solid suggestion, actually. You're more agile, sure, but the sense of progression and smart level design is somewhat close to what Castlevania provides. Very different setting, obviously.

If you're open for elements of exploration I'd recommend Faxanadu and Zelda 2 as well. The latter especially nails that feeling of weight in your actions, at least in my opinion.

If you're looking at NES games try Shadow of the Ninja or Kabuki Quantum Fighter. Both pretty good Castlevania/Ninja Gaiden style knock-offs. Shadow of the Ninja is on the Wii VC but I don't think Kabuki was re-released anywhere.

Odallus is awesome. It's probably one of the best examples of what you're looking for. Please tell me you played Castlevania The Adventure Rebirth? If not that should be your next objective.

That said, there aren't a ton of Classic-style clones out there, but I'll do my best to suggest some stuff that might be up your alley:

Soul of Darkness surprised the hell out of me. It's a pretty good little Castlevania clone and oddly worth looking into.

Parasitus is currently an XBLIG exclusive and still available I believe, and was definitely fun. It's cheap as heck, so if you're still rocking a 360, do it up.

Shaman King Master of Spirits and the sequel are fun games, so there's two right off the bat for you. I believe (someone correct me if wrong?) they're literally built using the same engine as Circle of the Moon, since the first game uses the same literal assets as one of the levels found there. It's not the deepest set of Castlevania clones, but they're fun enough. One note, do not buy Legacy of Spirits. Not teh same kind of game at all.

Monster Tale doesn't get nearly enough love. It's on the easier side, but it's a lot of fun and totally something you'd enjoy if you're going more for the later entries in the Castlevania series.

Games to avoid:

Bloodrayne: Betrayal: Starts of great and has amazing music, but gets really repetitive and tedious as you play on. By the end of it I hated it.

Anima Ark of Sinners: Just pure garbage trash. Don't bother with it.
Notes on other replies:

Ninja Gaiden and Castlevania play quite differently. I would not say that NG piggybacks off Castlevania, and while you might like both, they're very different games.

Volgarr is cool but really hard. It's also definitely a Rastan clone in every way on purpose, not a Castlevania clone. You might like it, though.

Holy Diver, I hear, is really really hard. I thought about buying the Famicom cart but after hearing that, I'm steering away.

Locomolito is a great developer, and Curse of Issyos is great, as is Maldita Castila (it's like a Ghosts N Goblins/Castlevania mashup).

I remember these as metroidvanias, not classicvanias.

I didn't even know Adventure Rebirth existed. =O Gotta buy some Wii points, I see (damn wii shop channel has never accepted my card for some reason, though it works fine everywhere else, including WiiU and 3DS)!

Agreed on Bloodrayne Betrayal.

DLd Curse of Issyos already, just have to get my 8bitdo back as I lent it to a friend and I'll get to it!

I bought Monster Tale based on recommendations years ago but never touched it, I see I'll have to go get it (alot of my stuff is at my parents' house in a different country). Will be on the lookout for Soul Of Darkness, and since I was planning on bringing my 360 over to replay Guardian Heroes in co-op I might as well check out Parasitus as well! Thanks, man!

No prob. Just note that Monster Tale is not a classic style adventure, it is definitely in the same vein as the later titles. Adventure Rebirth is STRICTLY classic though. And it's awesome.

I think Master 1 was better than Master 2, but they're both OK. I can't stress enough, though: Don't make the mistake of buying Legacy of Spirits lol I have no idea why they titled them so similarly, but Legacy is an RPG.

It'll be a few months before I go home so Monster Tale will have to wait, anyway. Got Adventure Rebirth and SOD as immediate priorities.

They're supposedly working on a Monster Tale remaster for 3DS. News has been very sparse, but it's apparently going to be done "soon".

Thanks for this thread! I had never heard of Odallus or Soul of Darkness. Will definitely have to check them out!

Anyone on the fence about Odallus but likes classic Castlevania, go buy it. It's to classic Castlevania what Megaman is to Shovel Knight.

Also shamelessly copy pasting one of my previous post about Odallus, if only to raise awareness

Odallus: The Dark Call.

Criminally under appreciated game, which in my opinion is up there with Shovel Knight regarding the quality and respect to the NES era. If you ever wanted a new classic Castlevania, look no further.

Also it's Berserk as fuck. Especially the last stage.

I suggest Castle in the Darkness for OP.

You mean what Shovel Knight is to Mega Man.

Unless Odallus is the old NES classic that Castlevania is a tribute to...

Yes! I came here to post Castle in the Darkness, too. I love this game.

Edit: It should be noted that I only enjoy classic CV myself, and CitD hits the spot for me.
