Best DS games?

I have this game, its actually really fun, best Tennis game on DS and one of the best sports games on DS.
Would you recommend it to people who don't know Japanese? I might wait anyway. Surely, it has to be released eventually since Prince of Tennis is licensed. . . right?

I heard the GBA version is supposed to be better but I scored Polarium today for $5 and I'm having a lot of fun with it. I love sit-back-and-think puzzle games far more than timed/falling block puzzle games.

None of these games are that good, except Mario Kart the others i actually have tried out but they never appealed to me.

judging by your avatar you have been tainted by the horribleness that is ffxi, such a curse can alter your perception of fun and amusement

What was the verdict on Hotel Dusk? 'Brilliant point+click comeback classic' or 'stylish but flawed text adventure'?

The 2nd one. Love the art, though.

Or to put it another way, should I pick up Pheonix Wright or Hotel Dusk?

I played Phoenix Wright immediately after finishing Hotel Dusk. I liked it a lot more, and it made me realize that Hotel Dusk was not all that good.

there are good guides on Gamefaqs, but even without them it is pretty straight forward and the specials are pretty much universal, its the same for every charater.

New Super Mario Bros. is a solid platformer.

Kirby Canvas Curse is an absolute blast to play.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney is brilliant. I'm nearly finished with the first one and I can see why so many people here mention it.

Jump! Ultimate Stars is one of the best DS experiences I've had. Top notch fighting engine and an great amount of characters, levels and missions. Watch this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tlaJw_TUoTc
to figure everything out and check GameFAQs to figure out the missions/abilities.

Advance Wars: Dual Strike is great if you like strategy games. I found it fun and pretty tough to boot.

Tetris DS is classic.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Justice for All
Tetris DS
New Super Mario Bros.
Mario Kart DS
Pokemon Diamond/Pearl

Pretty much every genre is represented by good/excellent titles except fighting (A sprite based Smash Brothers seems like a no-brainer, but what do I know)

If you are into strategy:
Advance Wars Dual Strike
Age of Empires

Action:
Castlevania DS/PoR, Lunar Knights

RPG: Pokemon D/P comes out this month. Also Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time, though its more of an adventure game.

FPS: Metroid

Puzzle: Tetris, Meteos, Puzzle Quest

Adventure: Pheonix Wright, Hotel Dusk

Rhythm: Ouendan/EBA (both worth buying)

Platforming: New Super Mario Brothers, Kirby

Racing: Mario Kart

Also, Nintendogs and Animal Crossing are worth your money if you're into it.

but, as far as must buys go, my absolute favorites are AW: DS, NSMB, Mario Kart, and Meteos.

Man, the DS ****ing rules. And there is no end in sight (Square Enix is taking a shit made of gold all over the DS, and Phantom Hourglass)

Oh wow. That's the last time I look anything up in Wikipedia, I guess.

The game premise is similar to Nintendo's multi-character platform beat'em-up series, Super Smash Bros., except that it uses characters from Weekly Jump rather than Nintendo.

It depends...my tastes are skewed to action and platformer-style games, so your mileage with my favourite DS games may vary. At any rate...

I absolutely adore both DS Castlevania titles, with Portrait of Ruin being a bit better than Dawn of Sorrow, mainly because the incessant soul-grinding in DoS. Still, though, DoS is a stellar game as is PoR.

Nanostray's weapon changing system isn't that hard to master. I managed to adjust after one level, so I don't think you'll have a problem. Past that flaw, you'll find a solid shmup. Nothing spectacular, but shmups are so rare nowadays that I'll take anything.

Mega Man ZX is basically the result of an unholy union between Mega Man and Metroid. I don't like it as much as the Zero games, but it's still a good game.

The two Kirby games are also worth looking at. Canvas Curse is a must-own and Squeak Squad, while almost insultingly easy, is still a fun romp.

Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime has similarities to Kirby; extremely easy, yet extremely endearing and cute. I had a lot of fun with it, but it all depends on if you enjoy the tank battles. If you do, then rejoice, you've found an addicting little game.

New Super Mario Bros.
Yoshis Island DS
Sonic Rush
Kirby Canvas Course
Mario Kart DS
Mario & Luigi 2
Phoenix Wright
Phoenix Wright 2
great for casual play: Brain Training
if you really loved the original one: Super Mario 64 DS

dont listen to jon bones...

Koma (panel) is the term for the characters that the player can use in the game. Each koma uses from 1 to 7 squares of the koma deck at the bottom screen of the Nintendo DS. The deck has 20 squares (4 x 5) for the player to place his koma.

There are three types of komas: help koma, support koma and battle koma.

* Help koma are only one square large. They'll boost up or help players in the game, but they will not appear on Battle Screen.
* Support koma are two to three squares large. These koma will show up briefly on the battle screen to help the player, generally by attacking, blocking, restoring health, or some other move.
* Battle koma are four to seven squares large, and and these koma fight throughout each round. These koma represents the characters that the player controls in the battle screen, and the player can switch between characters by tapping their koma in the koma deck like a tag battle.

The player can build and store up to ten koma decks, and each deck must have at least one help koma, one support koma and one battle koma to be valid for use in battle. There are also a set of predefined decks that the player can use, but the player cannot change or delete those. It is also possible to exchange decks between friends, but they won't be able to edit the decks.

Ally boosting is done by placing komas next to each other in the deck maker. If the komas placed next to each other are "compatible", their attributes will go up. Battle characters can get a longer health bar, or increase the maximum number of special attack gauges.

So this is basically Super Smash Bros. with anime characters instead of Nintendo's?
To extend on that enlightening "No." that you got ... the style is very similar to SSB (which is part of the charm, I guess). However, they do employ a rock-paper-scissors type of battle system. You also have the ability to swap in different characters, boost them with different cards, etc. So, I would argue that there's considerably more strategy in JUS.

EDIT: Ah. He replied. Curse me and my assumption that people on GAF are too lazy to fix their mistakes! Anyway, yeah, that's a more detailed explanation of the card system.

Oh, and I've never played it ... but ...

Pac Pix (A bit short but very unique!)

One that may not get a mention is Prince of Tennis 2005 Crystal Drive.

-prince-of-tennis-2005-jap.jpg

Surprised that this game even got mentioned here. Totally, crazily, broken game. I mean, to unlock everything, you have to win most of the tournament with 1 rally only, and also win 10 in a row by watching the computer matches...

Quite a lot of fun though, especially in multiplay.

Jump! Ultimate Stars, imo, the best online game on the DS by a mile
Bleach DS 2
NSMB
Children of Mana, isn't too bad as well despite a dungeon crawler
EBA/Ouendan
Tetris DS
Sonic Rush, the best Sonic game in recent memory
Advance Wars DS
Brain Training, surprisingly fun

There are a lootttt of great games on DS!

My much loved are Phoenix Wright series, Ouendan or EBA, Mario Kart or Diddy Kong Racing, Deep Labyrinth, Dragon Quest series and Picross.

Brilliant 2.5D Sonic Game.

B000MQ9G0W.02._SCLZZZZZZZ_V24269229_SS400_.jpg

I've been playing it a few days and its awesome, the stylus control was made for this game :)

B000EOTWSI.02._SCLZZZZZZZ_SS500_.jpg

Brilliant Adventure game, one of the main games responsible in reviving the adventure genre.

B000EOTWRY.02._SCLZZZZZZZ_V45516672_SS500_.jpg

Great but Hard Operating Theatre Sim, if you have the Wii version then pass this by (even though the Wii version won't be out in the UK for the next 3 months *grumble*)

B0009ENA2W.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_V46433877_SS500_.jpg

Great Puzzle game that's almost up there with Tetris, I must've spent ages playing it to unlock all the worlds and weapons, one of the first games on the DS with Multiplayer (well one of the first games on the DS fullstop)

B000ERVMI8.02._SCLZZZZZZZ_SS400_.jpg

Lastly, a true return to form, sure the main game is pretty easy to complete, but try to get all the golden coins and the challenge raises quite considerably.

Awdscover.jpg

This game will last at least 150 hours, no joke.

002235031.jpg

And this one, a lifetime.

boxart_ds_hotel_dusk_room_215.jpg

Buy this if you like adventure games, because it is one hell of a great adventure game.

box-l.jpg

Not only a fun game, but very well-integrated use of the stylus.

box-l.jpg

This one, as well... sure is a challenge.

boxart_us_mario-kart-ds.jpg

Yay : )

elite_beat_agents_qjpreviewth.jpg

Buy this game because everyone says to. They say to because this game is awesome.

tetris_ds_pack.jpg

Best Tetris game on any console. Okay, well that's just my opinion but the Wifi bumps the longevity up twofold --so that's like forever times two.

None of these games really do anything for me after playing blockbuster titles like Gears of War and God of War and FF12 on a big ass LCD 40" with surround sound. I think I might sell my DS. rhythm action games do nothing for me so Ouenden is outta the question. Sports games on handheld? again thats pretty lame I reckon. Meteos was ok until i realised i could do well in it by playing with my eyes closed...(just keep moving the stylus down the screen every second). Phoenix Wright was good at first then got really lame by chapter 3 with its obscure and convulted puzzles. Most of the games seem like they're made for a younger audience in mind. I'm 28 so maybe thats why almost every game that is good doesnt appeal to me? I dunno. I'm not trying to start a flame war just saying how it is for me.
Same with PSP too why play any of its games when bigger better versions of them are out on PS2? I havent used my PSP in ages and dont think I beat a single game on it.
I bought a DS to get Castlevania those two games are simply way ahead of anything else.

Cuz you have bad taste and are a bit of a graphics whore.

Uhh...ok....then why start this thread in the first place?

Another vote for Phoenix Wright : Ace Attorney. I'm playing the second one at the moment, and am really enjoying it, but the crap music has caused a bit of magic to be lost.

Yes it is.
stalker, if you're referring to me: I wanted to add Princess Peach but tought it wasnt _THAT_ good to add to the best DS games list. I'm 22 :)

New Metroid (FTL) or old Metroid (FTW)? I could live with an old school platforming Mega Man with an item whoring, level discovering Metroid.

Gonna pick up some of the games listed here, the thread starter obviously has 'bad' taste in games. Still to 360/PS3 probably not worth you owning a DS, especially if you're going to be so dismissive.

Wow. your post makes me ashamed to be 28. And you cannot do well on meteos by scribbling! No more than you can do well in fighting games by pushing random buttons... But neh, we have very different tastes, and it has nothing to do with you being 28.

If I get like that when I'm 28, will you come to my house and off me?

Just sell it after you finish Castlevania. Done. Problem solved.

Try to find a MMZero game for GBA. Play it. Then imagine it easier, and with a more confusing level structure. That's MMZX.

'Metroid' comparisons are flawed. It's just a connected overworld that's immensely annoying to navigate.
