Best enemy AI of all time

I was also very impressed by the agility of the elites in Reach. However on several occasion during my legendary run, i encountered elites and brutes that would just stand still at mid range while I headshoted them with the DRM. Dunno if it's a bug or if the AI doesn't know how to react.
Yeah, there can be some odd instances where the AI does absolutely nothing. This is especially true when you're paired with Marines. Sometimes they'll just walk by an Elite or Brute and nothing will happen. The Elite/Brute will just stand there and look at them. It's like they're just saying hi to each other or something. :lol

The hammer drops him quickly as well. In fact, I had no idea that people had trouble with Shadow Link until years later.
i always just spammed Din's Fire on him. never gave me any problems as a kid.

when you actually fight him straight, though, he's an absolute blast. maybe my favorite boss in the series.

KZ2 and the original Uncharted. Don't know why the sequel had worse A.I. but the in the first one they were very elusive and worked together to flank you. KZ2 is pretty similar as well. And ofcourse, FEAR.

The original Half-Life. Play it on hard and try abusing the AI, mind you.

I am also of this opinion.

+1

From me.

I remember when I was playing 1st FEAR with hardest difficulty setting, I checked my network cable several times, I was filling like it was online.

I remember once died and while loading I decided to go one corner where it was dark and good shooting position.

After load I rushed and... Enemy was waiting for me in THAT corner in shadow.

LOADING...

Always kept me on my toes. And groups of them were... very overwhelming to say the least.
First difficulty hurdle in DMC...also scary to boot as the first time you meet it the attacks are just all over the place

In Smash Bros. Melee (and presumably Brawl, but I haven't checked this), if you use a consistent name while fighting AI opponents in free for alls, the computer will start learning from and reacting to you.

If you wavedash a lot, after a while, they'll learn to wavedash, too. They'll start throwing star rods instead of using them as intended, they'll meteor smash instead of refusing to edge guard at all.

If you don't use a name, they will treat you like a new player.
My god :o

I might actually be able to corroborate this. Me and my brother have noticed that the AI on our copy of Melee is stupid hard for some bizarre reason. On my friend's copy, which has seen considerably less playtime, the AI isn't nearly as good.

There wasn't anything in the DMC1 Shadow AI as it was the design. It was designed to 1) Make you use your firearm to take out it's shadow layer 2) Use your devil arm to damage it's core 3) Make you evade it's very complex long-ranged move 4) stay out of it's reach when it goes berserk. When there are 3 of them in a very small room, it's harder to beat them then most bosses...

Anyway if the criteria for best AI in a game is Evil Ryu then you might as well add Vergil (final boss battle) in DMC3 and Dante in DMC4. Dante in DMC4 has 3 times the movelist of the player and every fight he uses a different set of moves. Barring a few exploits, he can generally counter everything the player can throw at him and same for Vergil.

Also Gene from Godhand and Jeanne from Bayonetta. :D

I just played the first combat against Jeanne in hard mode and was pleased to see she is even more awesome to fight...also she has more moves.

Just sharing the awesome moment...., gotta love when games just don't add more damage to the enemies in harder modes...

The first AI that genuinely impressed me somewhat was the AI in FEAR. The MGS series AI is good as well.

Eh, I don't think this is true. Pretty sure it's just people noticing advanced techniques the more they use them themselves.

Sometimes when they're behind cover and wounded they stop popping out at all, forcing you to confront them face to face. Bravo, Naughty Dog.

That is cool, but Perfect Dark (N64) did it first.

If you camp in multiplayer and keep taking down the same AI, it will completely stop coming after you, forcing you to go find it. This can be terrifying with your radar turned off, btw.

Reach has great A.I. imo. Enemy A.i. that is. Friendly A.i. is still controller breaking (almost game breaking) terrible.
The driving AI is absolutely awful. 4/4 of the times I tried letting the friendly AI take the wheel, they have gotten stuck on nothing, almost reversed off a cliff, stopped in front of an entire battalion, etc. I could have sworn I heard press talk about how Bungie had finally nailed the driving in Reach. Instead, I think it's even worse than the driving in Halo 2.

If I understand correctly what you're describing, then Reach does this as well. I'll snipe at enemies with the DMR, and after killing a handful or taking a couple shots, the AI will retreat or go around another way if the terrain permits.

Reach Elites.
Those bastards, fighting one is hard enough but when they are in groups then it´s all ... *get´s stabbed by another Elite from behind*

Perfect Dark's Perfect AI is easily the most difficult shit ever.
I won't call it the best AI because it's just a buncha cruncha muncha bullshit cheating.

Halo Reach actually took a step backwards with respect to AI (too many enemies and about 30% of them are retarded, the rest are just decent). I think the best enemy AI out there is in Halo 3 and FEAR.

lolwut? The Elite AI in Legendary is basically this:

1) Stand still to receive damage.
2) After two shots, move to the right and then to the left to appear "smart"
3) Stand still to receive damage.
4) After two shots, move to the right and then to the left to appear "smart"
5) Stand still to receive damage.
6) After two shots, move to the right and then to the left to appear "smart"
7) Stand still to receive damage.

9) Stand still to receive damage.

Ohh, and the brutes far in the back that won't even move at DMR distance... smh

edit: Given the amount of praise Reach gets for its AI, I really feel like I played a different game. I loved Reach, its the best game I ever played, but the enemy AI was certainly not the brightest point. I believe the problem is that I killed most enemies with the pistol or the dmr. Maybe the enemy AI is more fun when you engage it in close quarters combat (you are forced to do this a lot in H3 and its the only option in FEAR). However, I just beat the campaign in Legendary and for my own sake, I wasn't going to get close to any enemy. I just kept my distance and 90% of the enemies felt as smart as target ducks at a carnival stand. In the last mission I got an AR kill and according to some weekly challenge that was barely my fifth AR kill... :lol

If only the ally AI in Halo was as great as the enemy AI. Granted, I do enjoy watching a soldier drive a Warthog in circles. :lol

Unreal Tournament AI was great back in the day. Not sure how it measures up now.

Ha, in Reach's campaign I got out of a vehicle to do something, and when I went back to it the AI gunner had gotten in the drivers seat and smashed into me at full speed.

That´s really weird godhandiscen, I will try to make a vid of such moment. I give you that, sometimes the AI freaks out and they just stand still, but most of the time it is a hunt.

Single player or Co-Op??

My Elites didnt react like that at all. I was battling one (DMR, some distance) and we both broke our shields, i jumped behind cover, back up against the wall, reloading, breathing... and the bastard runs around the corner and executes me. Didnt expect him to advance as it was all me prior to my ass whoopping.

This was on the 2nd level just before you get that pointer gun.

I just discovered this today. Elites in firefight (ESPECIALLY on Heroic and Lengendary) are INSANE!

AI in campaign isnt all that great to me though.

No, it just happened during the whole game. Some elites wouldn't even move. I mean, I wasn't going to rush at them because I didn't want to die, but it really pissed me off that they wouldn't try to do anything smart after it was obvious I was taking them down systematically from a distance. In fact, the worst opponent is that fucking grunt with the fuel rod cannon, that bitch is smart. Late in the game these grunts take 3 shots to die (helmets) and to get in position to kill one of them you have to expose yourself which means that you will have to evade the 4 plasma shots that will come at you (each shot can kill you, even through splash damage).

Single player of course. Check my gamertag, I can prove it, it's the same as my GAF name. The Halo Reach AI was just bad, really bad. I am pretty sure there is a more solid code behind the behavior, but some designer really fucked up the set pieces and that beautiful algorithm went to waste.

The elites are extremely dumb. There is one set piece in the last level when I literally ran out of ammo (there were only AR's around, but :lol AR). I was about to restart the level, but i noticed that if I got close to the elite but still remained behind cover, my AI partner would engage the elites and kill them off. I killed 4 elites this way. I was happy I didn't have to restart the level, but I was dissapointed it was so easy to trick the elites. I was literally one meter away from them, but since I was behind some crater, they wouldn't come after me.

It's at least very true for Smash Brawl. I didn't know it was present in Smash melee.

I can confirm that in Brawl the CPUS start to pick up on your habits and utilize them.

Oh I've had worse things happen. One of the missions in Reach had me, for whatever crazy reason, decide to man the turret of a Warthog. I quickly realized this was a bad idea when the AI decided to "park" near an edge... and the enemy decided to ram into them. Cue us toppling over. :lol

It's just twitchy moving and headshots all over the place. And that's exactly the way I like it.
