A lot of times, after a recommendation, you might get the "it picks up around Ep 3" or something. Name some animes that hook you with a strong Episode 1.

Cowboy Bebop
One Punch Man

Although I personally don't like where both series went, it's hard to argue that Sword Art Online and Attack on Titan don't have really strong opening episodes that establish the series.

Kill La Kill had a beautifully animated first episode, but it all went downhill from there.

Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Space Dandy, and Kill la Kill come to mind. I can't recall, but I think Trigun and Gurren Lagann had good first episodes.

- Yu Yu Hakusho
- Rurouni Kenshin
- Slayers

Absolutely love these shows (Slayers being my favorite), but I can't remember the first episodes for the life of me.

I don't remember much of the episode now, but I remember Wolf's Rain episode 1 really impressing me compared to how the rest of the series went.

People throwing out FLCL, Samurai Champloo, Cowboy Bebop and FMA are on point. Those shows did a fantastic job of hooking people right from the start. I like the TTGL and KLK mentions too. Attack on Titan is kind of mediocre as a whole to me, but the first episode had amazing impact. Onepunch Man is definitely this year's strongest show right from the start. It'll probably dominate threads like these in the future.
Space Dandy

This one is controversial compared to others in this thread, but Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

GTO The Animation
Space Dandy had one of the best first episodes if you completely ignore the first half which was just horrible.

Kill la Kill was an excellent showcase of what that show was all about.

I remember Rinne no Lagrange having a great debut episode before turning into a pile of meandering dog shit.

The show does not get to that in the first episode lol

hmm, I must be remembering the edited American version.

doesn't Raditz still come to Earth in the original version of episode 1? or is the whole episode about goku chasing gohan through the woods and waterfalls? >_<

The mid-90s version of me says Escaflowne's first episode was pretty good.

Also, don't sleep on original Macross' episode 1.

I liked Accel World for not fucking around too much. Feel bad for not finishing that season because it really bucked some lame, slow tropes.

Ah I forgot about the combining of episodes they did at the start.

In the actual one Raditz lands and fights Piccolo, which is still pretty cool.

Punch Line had a pretty cool first episode, too. I got a Kill la Kill meets FLCL vibe from it, but too bad the rest of the series was garbage.

To go with a show nobody has mentioned yet, Rage of Bahamut's opening episode is fantastic. It's all light-hearted beautifully-animated adventure, instantly bringing the characters and setting to life without slowing down the rollicking pace.

How can you not like an episode that introduces its characters like this?

That's a really good pick

IIRC, Yuyu's firat was him beating up some other delinquents and then ends with him getting hit by the car. Pretty good.

Slayers was Gourry "saving" Lina from some bandits. I forget the rest :-/

That's a really good pick
I'd probably pick this if I didn't forget how good it was.
