Watching Last Exit to Springfield as we talk. I've nearly died laughing already.

"That's a nice'a donut."

"It was the best of times, it was the BLURST OF TIMES?! You stupid monkey!"

"Homer, organised labour has been called a 'lumbering dinosaur'"

"AAAAAHHHHHH!"

"...my director is telling me not to talk to you anymore."

LMFAO. Brilliant episode, thank you to everyone who recommended it!

The animation for Homer nudges that scene to God-tier funny. I'd recommend Deep Space Homer and Bart vs. Australia, just to name a couple good episodes that haven't been listed yet.

A couple of my favorites

Bart's Comet
From the opening gag with the big butt Skinner balloon, to the Moe's bar gags, and the final heartfelt ending where Homer does something good for a friend for once, this is one of the greatest.

Homer vs. the Eighteenth Amendment

some amazing eps named in here.

If you would make a list of the 100 best episodes of the great TV shows of all time, the Simpsons would probably have the highest average quality list.

Homer: Bad Man is hilarious (the sexual harassment one with the candy convention in the beginning)

"Mr... Mr Simpson... Mr Simpson NOOOOOOOOOO!!!"

You Only Move Twice (Season 8 Episode 1).

The Simpsons has so many great episodes though that there is no "best" episode, only your favorite episode, which is hugely dependent on personal taste. For example, "Last Exit to Springfield" wouldn't make my top 10 Simpsons episodes, just never clicked with me quite as much as it did most others.

I think either You Only Move Twice or 22 Short Films About Springfield are my favorite episodes of all time. I also really like the Itchy and Scratchy Land episode.

Boy Scouts 'N The Hood is my current favorite. Everything in that episode is perfect- namely the peanut scene. Seasons 3-7 are nearly flawless.

In all seriousness, the show was just that good.

"Mr... Mr Simpson... Mr Simpson NOOOOOOOOOO!!!"

I think this one of my favorite episodes if not my favorite episode ever (can't really pick an overall). Just brilliant from beginning to end. Hell, I'm cracking up from the gif alone!

Just get the seasons 2-7 box set.

But if you must insist:

1. Lemon of Troy - A different episode compared to any Simpsons episode before or after. There's something off about it, yet in the most absolutely hilarious way possible.

2. Last Exit to Springfield - The classic that will be studied in classrooms a hundred years from now or something.

3. Boy-Scoutz 'n the Hood - Best Homer/Bart episode out there.

4. Lisa's Substitute - Season 2 was a very unique period for the Simpsons as it was the only time they managed to combine humor, sentimentality and emotional resonance in such a magnificent way. This is the episode that exemplifies it.

5. Crepes of Wrath - Very dark episode very early in the series. Some really good lines, not to mention the Adil character being as relevant now as he was in 1989.

No that's not it. It even had its own song with the school chior singing it and Homer practicing kung fu and shit in the back yard.

Yep, that's definitely Whacking Day.

Also, thanks for all the suggestions! I can't reply to them all but I have read and noted each and every one. I'll be watching them all in due course.

Too many great episodes to choose from. I would say thread about worst episodes from s1 to s8 would generate more interesting discussion and intersting lists.

Not necessarily the best episode, but "Holidays of Future Passed" (s23e9) feels like the perfect series final to me. It's pretty much the last new Simpsons episode I watched too.

Overall there are too many great episodes to single one out. You Only Move Twice is probably the best, but I also like less popular episodes like Mountain of Madness.

Boy-Scoutz 'n the Hood is my choice, but only barely, as the rest of my favourites are in really close contention.

It's also the episode I quote the most, by far.

This is the second most created topic on GAF.

First being what is the worst episode of Simpsons.

Last Exit to Springfield or just about any from season 5. Some from season 6 would also qualify and as would Home Sweet Homediddly-Dum-Doodily from season 7

edit: In it's prime the Simpsons is the best comedy of all time, unfortunately they couldn't quit and most of the show is shit

I just rewatched Last Exit and Lemon of Troy and they're both very good but also highly overrated!

You Only Move Twice stands victorious, with Monorail sitting at it's right hand.

Lisa's Substitute
May not have been the most hilarious episode, but it had alot of heart in it. Definitely the best Lisa Episode
Even if a good chunk of her later episodes were shit.

Treehouse of horrors V
The first two segments were pure perfection and was the peak of the Halloween episodes. The third segment doesn't compare but as a whole, definitely a thoroughly enjoyable episode.

A Star is Burns
Had man getting hit with a football, what more could you want?

Homer Badman is my personal fave. The bit where Kent uses an infrared camera to peek into the kitchen gets me every time.
"He's literally stewing in his own juices!"
Also best episode for freeze-frame gags.
