Best fighting games of last gen

Smash Bros. will always be my favorite fighter of every generation, but Tekken Tag Tournament 2 is also amazing. Had fun with Marvel vs. Capcom 3 too. Street Fighter IV was cool. I really want to play Persona 4 Arena (Ultimax), but I'm waiting for it to go down in price.
 
I had a lot of fun with Dead or Alive 5, the free-to-play version no less. Persona 4 Arena was decent fun too. Soulcalibur V would be a whole lot better if it had Guard Impact, but still solid. Didn't play VF5 or any Tekken game this gen.
SCV does have GI, but it takes meter
 
Blazblue > Persona 4 Arena > Dead or Alive 5 > Soul Calibur 5 > Mortal Kombat

SC5 is probably the most fun for a single player, blazblue has the best online experience, and the best mechanics and characters.
 
SFV is on 360? Told yall that shit was gonna be multiplat

My favourite 2D fighting game of last generation was definitely Arcana Heart 3, though I also enjoyed the earlier iterations of BlazBlue (I don't mind CP too much but I hear CP2.0 hasn't been well-received by Japanese arcade vets). I enjoyed the SFIV series casually but didn't really get into MvC3 (though I certainly had fun watching tournament matches). I suppose ports and remixes don't really count, but I was really glad when Guilty Gear XX AC+ (and eventually R) made its way onto the last-gen consoles.

My tastes in 3D fighting games changed quite a bit last generation - I loved Tekken 5 Dark Resurrection but was lukewarm with Tekken 6 (wasn't a fan of bounds and Rage, and they made many changes to my previous main Lei). I also wasn't too fond of Tekken Tag Tournament 2. I enjoyed Soul Calibur IV (despite the Star Wars characters) and even liked Soul Calibur V's gameplay, though its sweeping changes, movelist "streamlining" and character choices were questionable and the community sort of dropped off in my part of the world (I hope to God that we get a decent sequel this generation, but its stagnant popularity probably suggests otherwise).
 
Skullgirls, TTT2, and USFIV are the tops for me. Had a lot of fun with DoA5 finally redeeming itself in my eyes after a disgraceful DoA4 and SCV.
 
Lots of great fighters last gen

Ultimax, smash, Xrd (if that counts as last gen), USF4, KOF 13, Skullgirls, etc.

Ultimax is probably my favorite of them though.

That's not a problem. It turns GI into something you need to work for, rather this momentum destroying thing you could spam (at least until someone did a Just Guard). Speaing JG, they're in the game. If you're good enough you can have a meterless GI that way.

Anyway, I'd recommend SCV, DOA5U, and Persona 4 Arena Ultimax. The best fighting game to get started with is one that you really like the look and feel of. In your case it's Xrd (great game, BTW), so you've already got a great start.
 
To make this easier, if you want to go the 2D route, start with Street Fighter (Ultra Street Fighter IV is the most recent version). Once you get the fundamentals down, you'll be able to pick up and play 99% of all the other 2D fighters and start learning their basics. The Capcom Marvel Vs. games may feel a little too overwhelming/chaotic to start with. Hell, they still feel way too chaotic for me!

If you want to go the 3D route, I think you could really start with any of the bigger titles- Virtua Fighter, Tekken, Soul Calibur, or Dead Or Alive. The latter can be thought of as a dumbed-down Virtua Fighter at its base level and would definitely be a good start for beginners.

Also to note, Dead Or Alive 5 Last Round, the newest version of the game, is coming out next month. There's also a new Mortal Kombat, MKX, coming out in April.
 
Soulcalibur V was my favourite last gen.
As a fan of VF I also liked VF5 vanilla a lot, but it was just "more of the same". Same thing for DOA4.
I thought DOA5 was just ok, and VF5FS was a disappointment.

I love fighters so I'll probably play any of the genre; but those where my top 3, yes.

Skullgirls

The rest have not stood the test of time. SF4 started off huge and grew, and SG started off awesome and dead and has remained awesome and mostly dead.

Honourable mention to MK9 and Injustice, who both ended up turning the tables on expectations and got frustratingly close to being legitimately good.

ASW's games are popular in a small group but keep having asinine design choices.
Tekken's popularity is now arguably stagnant and the franchise hasn't really made a positive step.
Soul Calibur is actually dead now.
VF5 was good but it is looking like the last title in the series. :(
KOF is now only popular amongst a small group after being popular for a short while again with 13.
Mahvel 3 was never a good game. It was a popular game. It was an exciting game. But it is a bad modern video game and it is now suffering for it.
Sm4sh is still not as good as Melee despite being released more than ten years later.
KI has its fans but never really shone as it could have done.

Skullgirls was popular enough for the following to happen without the game dying off in its small group of fans, and arguably growing instead:
1. Reverge Labs effectively closes just after development on v1 ends.
2. The game is quite broken for at least two versions.
3. The game is delisted.
4. Everything else to do with the Skullgirls Curse.

Despite the hardships:
1. The game had a major turnout at Evo 2014 for a side game.
2. The community donated a stupid amount of money for the development of several new characters via Kickstarter.
3. The core dev team largely stuck together.
4. Mike Z improved the game every week on Steam for months, showing off the power of a more agile development process that all fighting game developers should use.

SG has:

1. The best 2D graphics of any fighting game ever. (3S, ASW and SNK fans might disagree on this one)
2. The best implementation of Versus mechanics.
3. An amazing training mode.
4. Amazing online.
5. Amazing soundtrack.
6. The above and the other little decisions in the game making the title feel super polished.

SF4 wins, but SG gets an honorary mention to me.

(SF4 wins because without it, the 2D genre would still be niche, several games would probably have never been made, I and many, many, many other people would not be part of the FGC, all the crazy talented 2D players would not be so visible and sponsored, the FGC would still be tiny and everyone would still be playing 3S and ST. Not that the latter's a bad thing but scene growth is a good thing!)
 
No two games have consumed me and my friends' times like SF4 and UMvC3. We must've played thousands of hours at this point.

However, P4A does have a special place in my heart. It was so fun maining Yukiko.
 
Blazblue. Oh my god, I played so much Blazblue. I played well over 1000 online matches, and 1000's more with local multiplayer. I was in the Top 20 Arakune's based on Player Points. I fought and beat the number one ranked Tager online.

I played that game so damn much. I knew it inside and out. I could do roughly half a life bar's worth of damage without any meter from in two or three easy to get situations.

Man, what a game.

I wasn't a huge fan of Continuum Shift and beyond though.
 
Would the Melty Blood games count? Two of them were on PC.... OK, fine. :< And all four releases (MBAC PS2, MBAC PC, MBAA PS2, MBCC PC) happened during the last generation? It's jarring just how goddamn long it was.

Some of the best have already been said by many members before me . I would also add my vote to Tekken tag 2 and street fighter.

Also for people up north , there are a few scenes where you can go . Manchester Battle Arena for the guys in Manchester , for people in Liverpool there is the Edge Hill university fgc and there is also the fraggers cafe on occasion.
 
An alternative if you are at all interested: Mobile Suit Gundam Extreme Vs Full Boost for PS3. If you ever liked Gundam you'll of course get more value out of it, but I think if you just like expertly designed competitive games you'll really dig it too.

Thread is not that active since we have an IRC chat room that we've been using since the prior game came out in 2011, where most of our matchmaking and game theory and other things are discussed now.

Rather than a 1v1 technical fighter, it's a competitive 2v2 team-based action game. To give a sense of its credibility (and to be honest I haven't seen any more recent stats), it was the top ranked/most successful competitive arcade game in Japan for like 3 years after the current generation's initial arcade release in 2010. I'd imagine the current version is still extremely successful but I haven't seen any actual data for that.

The controls are very simple, it's all just simple directions and buttons. No quarter-circles or anything like that, the most complex input you have available is to quickly press down and up to block--which is rarely the best defensive tactic you have. Because of the simple nature of the inputs, it makes the online experience very very smooth. Miniscule amounts of lag that could throw off an entire combo in a more traditional technical fighter would go unnoticed in this game.

I suppose the netcode is very good as well, which also helps. The group of us play together in 12-player lobbies from all over the world--Bermuda (that's me), Germany, Japan, UK & US of course, and a few other exotic places. Occasionally there is some terrible lag with this variety of locations and unpredictable network conditions, but most of the time I play it has been very good.

So unless you have really unreliable Internet and can only play on WiFi, I think you will be able to find at least 3 people in our group that you'll be able to play with regularly with a good connection. Many of us have been playing together since the prior game in 2011, and we've picked up even more since the current console game came out a year ago. And we're all very happy to teach new people about the game.

Potential Downsides:

-It's only out in Japan. Don't worry about a language barrier though, we can teach you everything you need to know.

-It's never coming out in English. Bandai has an upcoming free to play game called Rise of Incarnates that is a severely watered-down version of Gundam EXVS designed for western audiences instead, but it doesn't compare. If you do manage to get into one of their betas though, do check it out for a diluted taste of what the Real Thing feels like.

-It uses an 'Online Pass' system. A newly purchased game--physical or digital--comes with one code to use on that one PSN account. Even if you gameshare with someone to get the game, you will need to purchase a 1,000 yen online pass on your Japanese Playstation account in order to play online.

-If you have an irrational hate of the subject matter (anime, mecha/robots, Gundam in particular) that you can't get over, I guess there's no helping that.

-Two player split screen severely downgrades the experience. FPS drops from 60 to 30, screen is much smaller, can't play online...not recommended at all.

-As mentioned, it is a 2v2 competitive game, so if you are adamant about not playing online and can't find 3 other humans to play with (who each have their own Online Pass) you will not get the proper experience. The game is not balanced at all for 1vs1. There are 'power levels' so there are some units who are designed to be much stronger than others. The power difference would be an overwhelming advantage without a teammate on both teams. There are systems in place that deal with this power balance that you can learn more about if you are interested in the game, but it only fully applies to 2v2. Aside from the power difference, there are also movement techniques that can be used that can make it almost impossible for your opponent to hit you if you are playing 1v1.

So, in all, just wanted to give an alternative option if you wanted to explore it. A slight tangent from what you're looking for, but still closely related. I love most of the fighting games mentioned in this thread (I bought a PS3 solely for VF5 after I played it in arcades in Japan), but I think the Gundam Extreme Versus series might be my overall favourite games of the last generation.
 
UMvC3 was certainly the one I put the most time into. I played SCV heaps at launch, but once the online lost the bulk of its numbers I stopped. I own Skullgirls but it never grabbed me. I've yet to touch any version of SF4, mostly just put off by how fucking ugly it is. My sister actually got a free Steam code from Loot Crate, so if I can convince her to part with it (not like she'd ever play it anyway) then I might give it a whirl. Honestly though I'm too preoccupied with my Melee career to put much time into anything else.

Probably because the majority of people on GAF haven't played it because of the late localization of it. It took 2 years to come to console, and then 8 months to make its way to the US, unlike GG. Kind of funny there's a pack-in for it in GG XRD, all things considered. :P
 
Tekken 6 : Bloodline Rebellion.

By far my favorite fighting game ever...

The only downsides are that the online mode sucked and nobody plays the game anymore :(
 
MK9 - What a return to form for the series.

TTT2 - Probably the most fun I've had with a Tekken game in while.

DoA5 - Easy to pick up and play, hard to master.

Skullgirls - You can tell it's meticulously crafted by people who are passionate about fighting games.

I like it, but the OP wanted the best and also wants something to get into fighting games with and a decent community. I don't know if I'd start with UNIEL.
 
Tekken Tag 2 - Didn't think Bamco could top Tek Tag 1(the best tekken in the series), but they surely managed to pull it off. That being said, I am not that keen on Tek7 yet.
