The rest of the games just felt a bit more oppressive... Not something that typically phases me, but when held up against Infinite it is, really, just enough of a reason for me to not love them.
That's the whole point - System Shock was born as a sci-fi horror, which is why Dead Space works so well and started development as SS3.

System Shock 2.

Imo, none of the others (except maybe SS1) come close.

It's kind of amazing how System Shock wasn't canonized as being part of the "Shock" multiverse but I guess that has to do with the publishers, licensing, copyrights, etc.

How is Bioshock 2? Is it really good or is ot a quick cash grab coming from the first one?

Also, do you guys/gals recommend any mod or something when playing System Shock 2 for the first time? An enhanced edition seems to be in the works, so I guess I'll wait for that.

Bioshock.

I loved System Shock 2 but I'm pretty sure it would be considered borderline unplayable today.

What a great series of games.

It's System Shock 2 for me too. Although there is a specific section towards the end that I completely hate, it is still the better designed and the one with the more original story than the rest that I've played at least. And really Bioshock felt quite like a rehash of the SS2 story (I still liked that game).

Disclaimer: I have not touched Bioshock Infinite, and only played Prey for a few hours (but I quite liked what I've played of it).

Bioshock 2 is really good. It's not a cash grab at all and does some interesting things.

They should all be VR
The hacking minigame of System Shock.

In VR.

crazy eyes wow GIF

Should the Bioshock games really count as being in the same genre as System Shock and Prey? They're so scripted they don't feel like the same type of game at all, particularly by the time you get to Infinite.

I know about the og System Shock remake, but there is a SS2 remake in the works as well!?!?

Nope, not remake. Just an enhanced edition from the same people that made the enhanced edition for System Shock and it's remake.

Why? The controls hold up perfectly well. WASD movement. Click to shoot. Right click to interact. Simple drag and drop inventory. I always thought that SS2 and the two Thief games barely aged at all in terms of controls and gameplay.

It's a tie between System Shock 2 and Bioshock. I've also played BS2, but didn't really enjoy it as much as the last 2. Infinite and the original I didn't really bother with.

Best: System Shock 2, it's so interactive and feature packed even though I never beat it I can't help but admire it

Favorite: Original Bioshock. It's a classic I ought to replay, and reminds me of one of my friends so it's a special game.

I have a feeling you haven't played System Shock 2
I've started it, but you're correct, I've never completed a playthrough -- it's on my list, but BioShock is quite frankly, my second favorite game of all time (After Ocarina Of Time, which is also the greatest game ever made) -- so I'd be shocked if it could crack the list.

Out of these I only finished Prey so I voted for that one. I enjoyed my time with System Shock 2 but a few hours in it turns into a pretty subpar shoot-bang, the first two hours are phenomenal though and one of the best survival horror games I played.

I've played them all and I believe the original System Shock is the superior experience, as far as the genre goes. Yes, I am one of those goons who believe SS1 is better than SS2, despite it's clunky controls and weird interface. For decades I used to like SS2 better, but my opinion changed after I played SS1 completely for the first time last year. What an amazing, impressive and memorable classic!

System Shock 2, lights out, a good pair of headphones. Nothing else comes close, but the first 2 bioshock's aren't terrible by any means.
Infinite however was a parody of the series, a complete joke.

System Shock 2 is the real deal.

When I first played Bioshock, and everyone was raving about it, I couldn't get past how it was an inferior SS2 clone.

Of the Bioshock games, Infinite is the one I actually enjoyed the most!

Also Prey is really fucking good! The true successor to SS2 imho.

System Shock 2 for me.
BioShock was good but started shifting more towards fps instead of rpg and that to me is the down side of the BioShock series.

I played all of them except System Shock games. Best game is Bioshock 1 of course. Great story-concept-city-characters, perfect atmosphere... It was unique and fun to play too. Plasmids and guns were cool.

I hate Infinite, killed the franchise for me. It was a good game but not a Bioshock game imo. I didn't like the art style. This franchise should have stayed in water forever.

I don't understand why Prey belong to this list. It was a completely different game, other than some gameplay elements. Is it made by same devs?

Edit: came here after laughs lol. Yeah, as an immersive sim Prey was great, better than bioshock infinite, maybe even bioshock 2.
