Best game of show based purely on gameplay?

Sunset Overdrive looks like insane fun. Just go crazy.

I really like Dragon Age gameplay so there's nothing about Inquisition that suggests it isn't going to be as good or better. That's the type of RPG gameplay I want.

Bayonetta was also insane fun. 2 should be as good.

This is GAF, I expect the game to tank. :P

Yep, I'm optimistic by nature and the game is almost condemned to tank. :P The casual / mainstream crowd won't give a shit about it and it's going to get crushed by the popular multiplayer shooters of the day. Doesn't change my perception of it, which is that the mechanics look solid, creatively inspired and incredibly well though out. I'd be happy if it can have a bigger population than Black ops 2 on the Wii U. XD

Splatoon is the surprise hit for me, granted I didnt really venture into the Microsoft stuff at all. Such a fresh idea with enthusiastic devs, it was a fun reveal and whats looking like a fun game.

The one boss fight in Bayonetta 2 looked absolutely insane, that game is probably up there with Splatoon for me actually, haha.

I own a PS4 and Xbone, but not a Wii U. I watched the three main conferences, and Splatoon looked the best to me based purely on gameplay. Has nothing to do with being part of the "Nintendo crowd."

Funny how offended some people get when a certain game is given attention.

Its not being offended, my reaction is more like "Really ya'll????". I just don't see why this game is such a big deal, and i think most consumers will agree when it comes time to open their wallets.

so the game has to sell gangbusters to be considered to have great gameplay?

Watch these 2 videos and see if your answer doesn't change to Elite Dangerous:

I don't think you understand what gameplay means.

There is no gameplay in those gifs and the videos are also just atmosphere for the most part.
Best atmosphere/most immersive perhaps, but that has nothing to do with how good game mechanics are.

on topic: if bayonetta 2 is even half as good as the first game it's bayonetta 2 by far

splatoon looked really cool concept wise but will of course be heavily crippled by playing it on a controller

I don't get the witcher 3 mentions, the combat in tw1 was barely servicable (i'm a big witcher 1 fan despite that), the combat in witcher 2 was far from good and not much seems to have changed in tw3
It'll probably still have one of the best stories/dialogues, great atmosphere, great use of color etc but ok combat.

Splatoon.

Swimming up walls and hiding in ink as a squid (though moving still causes visible ripples) seals the deal. The giant paint roller they showed in trailers is just bonus.

It's a big deal because it's something new and fresh in a sea of rehashes.

The game is fully playable both on the floor at E3 and in general.

When the thread "Which game shown at E3 will sell the most?" comes up, Splatoon won't get a mention. I think most people here know enough about gaming sales trends to know that Splatoon will sell like shit.

People are just excited about a game coming out that looks genuinely unique and fun, which goes with the heart of this thread.

Yeah, ppl arent going to really give a shit about some game running around painting shit. it looks like it could be a fun distraction but not this mind blowing experience, and this game of the show talk is like LOL. how this is getting so much hype on here is beyond me, i guess the nintendo crowd can be pretty vocal.

If you don't see why people are excited for it, that's fine. Not everything is obvious to every person. But maybe you should just consider that maybe people are seeing beyond the Nintendo logo.

The game design is elegant, it is immediately obvious to me that the simple elements that comprise the game mesh together very well and allow for a lot of depth. People saying it looks shallow, or like a throwaway distraction obviously aren't thinking about it in the same way that I am.

Maybe it will be obvious to you in hindsight, or maybe it is the kind of thing that will never be obvious to you. That's ok.
By the end of the initial reveal in the digital event, I was hyped for it because it is obvious to me the potential that the game design allows. Simple design decisions that mesh together well to allow depth and breadth. I gotta applaud that, and applaud Nintendo for recognizing that and giving it plenty of exposure at E3.

I can see the appeal of the game, id like to try it too. but its not making my balls explode like you guys...i think people on here just overreact for anything Nintendo related just my opinion.

Eh, maybe. Depends if they market it. But it looks fun as hell, and if they market it smartly, it could be HUGE(relatively, I'm thinking if they can hit Wii U projections for next year, this could max out at around ~ 1 million LTD). I honestly thought Nickelodeon was making a video game when the trailer showed up. Throw this up on the kids networks, plus some advertising for teens and adults, and I think it'll be successful.

Batman, asscreed, bloodborne, mgs, sunset, dragon age, farcry looked very Very good. To be honest, most of the shown stuff in the conferences were pretty good.

I didn't like xenoblade though.

Yes and you are trying to convince us it has good gameplay by showing an animation and an explosion and some guy flying around in some interview because?

If you wanted to show gameplay you could have linked the video of the guy approaching and docking with the flight assist off (where he spirals in towards the middle) or some combat sequences.
Showing those gifs is about as silly and misplaced as showing a gif of drake's facial animation in that uncharted teaser in this thread

Your entitled to your opinion of course, but to me (and I assume others here), I'm most excited for the gameplay possibilities Splatoon has to offer. What they showed as a demo, while fairly straightforward (didn't show any other weapons, game modes, many other mechanics, etc.) still had a lot of interesting gameplay concepts. I can easily imagine all the cool stuff they can do with the core concept and it excites me.

It's a similar feeling I had when seeing Portal for the first time. It has such a fresh game mechanic that their are so many exciting possibilities for gameplay that just enter in people's mind when they see it, and that's the exciting part.

Of course, this thread is about game of the show based on gameplay shown. But I still stay Splatoon, because, for the limited amount of content they showed, it looked very promising and fun and I'm really excited for what they do next with it.

EDIT: For clarification, my interest in Splatoon is not because Nintendo. In another lifetime, I could've totally have seen this as a Valve game or a Sega game. Being done by Nintendo is exciting because its a new IP and says something about their desire to branch out, but it doesn't make my opinion of the game design or hype any better or worse.

It's a mechanically fresh, creative, unconventional take on the arena shooter formula, done with a sense of style.

Why wouldn't people get excited for it?

It's fine that you don't dig it. Don't see why you have to try make excuses for why others may like it though.

Bayonetta 2 seem so far to be equal of the first game, which is one of the best games ever made.

Bayonetta 2 easily.

Yeah i can dig it the game does look stand out because its different. me personally Id rather just shoot people instead of paint stuff. but we'll see how it pans out.

You run around and paint, and you get powerups to paint more and powerups to keep the opposing team from painting. your making a lot of assumptions about the depth. Maybe ill be eating crow on this one but as it stands, i rate the prospects of this game as "decent/good"

If ubi, Sega or Sony- or even an indie - had come up with this I guarantee you I would be just as interested.

If all you saw was 'paint instead of shoot' I invite you to look again. The potential for mindgames and traversal options enabled by the ink - which is itself a constantly shifting environment due to player action - is huge. I sincerely hope they can deliver.

Have you seen the in depth videos? I mean, its not just painting, the seemingly brilliant part is how painting is tied to mobility, so that you're laying down paint not just to increase your percentage covered but also to generate paths to move in or disrupt your enemy's motion

Of the games that showed ACTUAL GAMEPLAY?

Batman: Arkham Knights
Evolve
Rainbow Six: Seige
Little Big Plant 3
Lords of the Fallen

Those 5 games all looked the most impressive to me.

------
Bloodbourne showed barley anything, so I can't say I'm impressed yet. Yea, it'll be more "souls" gaming, which is good, but I didn't see enough to impress me.

Zelda - same deal. I need to see more. Could be amazing like OOT and MM, but I'm scared it may be more like Wind Waker, which I did not like at all.

Sunset Overdrive looks like fun, but it looks a tad bit too arcadey to me. It had that cartoony Capcom/DR3 look to it and I'm not a fan of that style. Looks a bit over the top to me.

No Man's Sky could be amazing. Or it could be a dud. What we've seen so far is nothing but looking around at wildlife and and shooting at asteroids. Again, I need to see more on this game. There has to be more than just RNG planets to go sightseeing around in.

Dragon Age - completely unimpressed. It didn't leap out and grab my attention in any way.

Witcher 3 - same thing. It looks like Skyrim. Been there, done that.

Just my opinion.

I had a chance to attend the convention and the game of show to me was Guilty Gear: Xrd Sign.

I was floored by the technical prowess on display. And the game just feels damn good.

That said I didn't get a chance to play Adrift which was constantly being talked about by those around me. That would be my runner-up.

Batman Arkham Knight looks like the complete Super Hero "GTA" I've always wanted, Bayonetta "I don't even, what is this?", and even Splatoon. Despite my dislike for Splatoon's art style, the gameplay itself is very interesting and unique.

There's some assumptions going around, but they are really just there because people see huge potential for the base mechanics. Especially squid mode.

I'm in that group, but even more because they have started to show that some of the more advanced ideas I had in mind are actually in the game. Even if it is just some basic stuff like slide jump shoot slide loops for fast movement.

You're making a lot of assumptions about the depth.
Maybe I'll be eating crow on this one. It could happen. But I perceive the game design to be elegant, succinct, and allowing for much depth. Which I personally am excited about and appreciative of, looking at it from a game design standpoint.
I like simple ideas that all mesh together very well into a cohesive and expandable whole. That's what I see here.

The Witcher 3 for the different elements of the griffin hunt (and I image the other hunts of large creatures will involve unique mechanics), the huge scale of the world, and that capital city not needing a loading screen. The combat wasn't the smoothest thing in the world, but it has some interesting mechanics, and is more than good enough for me.

I can't pass up the new Rainbow Six game, because it looks like a modern take on the classic Rainbow Six games (Rainbow Six, Rogue Spear, and their expansions), and that's something to be very, very excited about.

Sunset Overdrive
really wish Insomniac went third party on that

Bayonetta 2 also looks great. And Bloodborne if we count all that leaked gameplay. Oh and Elite Dangerous.

Splatoon seems to bring a easy to jump in but incredibly layered gameplay that's going to be immensely fun. So my vote goes to Splatoon

followed closely by Project STEAM and Captain Toad. These two will be stellar, mark my words
