Best "Game Over" screens in gaming history?

A personal favorite:

One of my old school favorites as well. ;)

Elf for Amiga had a pretty brutal game over screen... a guillotine against a dark sky, then it chops (your) head off which bounces off down the hill, with some evil laughter. Really strange in an otherwise fairly normal semi-cutesy platformer adventure.

RE4's 'you are dead' screen really gets the point across.

One that haunted me as a youngster was Strider's evil witchlike boss with it's claw-like hand over it's crystal ball, laughing at me for losing the game.

I don't know about game over screens but I luv the GAMMEE OVEEER YEEEAAAAHHHH singing voice in Sega Rally :)

Every time I heard that I wanted to put my fist through the screen.

It's almost as if they are celebrating your failure.

Balance of Power had a game over screen that was just text. I don't recall the exact phrasing, but it was something like, "You have started a nuclear war. There will be no graphic images of mushroom clouds and flying bodies. We do not reward failure."

I remember the original Ridge Racer having a pretty funny soundbite; something like "C'mon, you can do better... next tiiiime!"

I like Prince of Persia: SoT's game over.

"No, no... That's not how it went."

Someone MUST have a soundbyte of "game over YEAH!" PLLLEEEASE, post it. I have the unfortunate fate of never playing that Sega game. :(

i'll vote for final fight and ninja gaiden arcade...

That's why... I think its more appropriate if instead they say GAME OVER NOOOOO!!!... or maybe not :D

Anyways, Skies of Arcadia... the shot of the heroes weapons in dead colours is very unique and makes me very sad till I wanna cry...

Also recently SNK vs Capcom: Chaos' GAAAME OUUUVAAAA!!! sounds very high-spirited :D

The first time I played RE4, it was late at night and my eyes were really tired. So when I died, I seriously thought the screen said "You are dood," which has become a running in-joke among my friends and I. :lol

I can't remember how old I was in the days of Dragon's Lair -- still in elementary school anyhow, but the death screen always bothered me because Dirk had that look on his face of blaming you.

I always liked Road Rash's ending sequences when you failed to place 3rd or above, especially the one in RR3 where the biker jumps off the truck, gets caught in a tree, and falls down and gets crushed by his bike (think that's how it went anyways). Most of them were pretty corny, but a few of them were pretty hilarious, and the first time I and a few of my freinds played RR2 we almost had a heart attack laughing (we were pretty young). The FMV vids on the Saturn were kinda lame though, the opening movie was alright though.

That reminds me of getting 4th Place in Mario Kart 64. They show the people at the podium all happy, then turn to your character (as the happy music slows down and gets all distorted), who's looking sad, turns around and drives off. Then after it passes a hill you hear an explosion and see him fly in the air yelling in pain :lol

Oh, yeah!

KATAMARI DAMACY, definitely. The abuse the King of All Cosmos heaps on you if you don't meet the goal is priceless.

Two that may not have been noted:

When Tesshu dies during one of his missions in Tenchu:Return from Darkness. Having your head skewered on a stake in stark sunlight is about as "game over" as it gets.

Then there is the "Doomed...in space" game over screen for Dino Crisis 3, a best for eliciting laughs.

For some reason, I always loved the Game Over screen for Nam-1975. Instead of a picture of your lifeless corpse or something, it was your character back in some jungle hellhole prison, with a letter in his hand, as if he was writing it to his wife knowing it would never be sent. It was all in black and white too, so you felt especially shitty when you lost. I have a screen cap, but no idea how to post images, so you'll have to user your imaginations if you haven't seen it. :)

The alternate game over when you lose to the final boss was even better..."HAHAHAHA! THE WORLD IS MINE!" And then the Earth explodes. This all made sense, given that this was set in Vietnam and all.

King of the Monsters had a good one:

"Sure, you monsters had your fun...but what about all the INNOCENT PEOPLE! you killed and maimed?" Deep.
