Best graphics this gen: Prince of Persia?

I'm not suggesting HALO 3 is the best looking game this gen, only pointing out that you obviously searched for a shitty looking picture of it. HALO 3 looks great.

I think Warhead looks better than any console game. Empire: Total War, too. Hell, I think Mirror's Edge PC looks better than any console game to date.

Just wanted to clarify that there are several PC titles that beat anything in the console arena. Some of the comments in here made it look like the cream of the crop of consoles are just shy of Crysis, but firmly in that second overall spot, which imo, isn't true.

Still, I am repeating myself when I say that this gen has been very good for graphics whores. :p

What an appropriate username.

personally I'm not a fan of PC graphics. They can be a little too clinical. (yes I understand there might be exceptions), whereas console games in the last couple of gens seemed resolution/polygon/texture limited, but then threw shitloads of other stuff on the screen as they had tons of fillrate left - so smoke, dust, particles, post-processing etc.

I'm looking forward to next gen. Stuff like the per pixel motion blur and DoF should be commonplace, and hopefully the resolution arms race will end on PCs (so 1080p should be a decent target) meaning more effort on post processing/effects etc

Oh lord...again. You really have no idea what you're talking about do you. The fact that you can remember to breathe every few seconds is impressive in itself.

If I wanted the game to run like that at Constant 30+ frames what kind of machine would i need? or is this some GT5 "photo mode" type garbage.
It's not possible to play Crysis at the level of quality in those MickeyKnox screens. The engine itself does not allow you to reach image quality anywhere near that clean. It's rare to find a "bullshot" in the world of PC games (in that, most of the time, you can actually achieve the image quality seen in such shots), but this is one such case.

They still look insane, though.

These are not in game playable scenarios correct? If they are then wow nice man.

Crysis do look good but in a way of higher resolution everything. I think whats going to impress me in the next evolution of 3Dgraphics is perpixel blur, photorealistic filters, godray lighting and DOF such as the peektures above. Like got some one said, they have the CGish look.

The last two Crysis shots there with Prophet appeared directly captured from the game (a cutscene, but without any additional AA) and are accurate.

Was using an 8800GT at time of these shots. I know have a 4870 1 GB so I get 10-15 more FPS using a custom config.

In some parts, GT5 looks insane, in others, not so much... look at the bridge and the hills on that screen! Nothing compared to other racers these days. A bit disappointing =/

KZ2, Uncharted, RE5, CoD:Modern Warfare, Naruto Ninja Storm (only because there are times when it comes so close to the animation).

and.........

This 2 pictures demostrate what i was saying. They look good and sharp but can say a little artificial. Just add some per pixel filters should look tons better. I think we humans have the ability to separate real from fake if they are too clean. I also think why those camera shots of a game running on hdtv looks better than direct screen shots. :lol

Eh? I see nothing wrong with the bridge or the hills.

What exactly is wrong with the bridge and the hills? It looks perfectly fine.

ITT Xbox 360-only owners meet up and share their denial.

or PS3 only owners conveniently forget about the PC. (which has actually happened several times in this thread).

or Wii only owners......

this is boring. i quit.

nothing touches the PC for very obvious reasons. nothing more to see here people.

that PC shot thread makes me want to go out and rob people to build a screaming rig. i was actually jealous.

for just stylized games, I love naruto UNS for PS3 and for realistic, I think killzone smokes all competition.

just sayin'!!!

but really, it's all in good fun. PS3 diehards will bombard you with KZ2 and Uncharted pics but when you bring up PC games the lame defenses always show up:

"PCs don't have generations"
"lulz, $3,000"
"art direction!!"

just funny is all.

KILLZONE 2 is a decent looking game made better with awesome post processing effects.
Crysis on a high end machine blows it out of the water (as it should)

Uncharted still looks fucking great.

POP, AC and SFIV all get a nod for art direction.

HALO 3 had awesome lighting... Damn that was good lighting.

GT5-P... Eh... Not impressed. Too much screen tearing and shit at 1080p. The whole thing feels like its still GT4... Bring on the real GT5 (E3?) where I can get a look at what its supposed to be like.

MIRRORS EDGE and MARIO GALAXY deserve a lot of love too.

Are you one of those special people that were trying to make the argument that GTA4 looks better in 600p blur-o-vision.

I think Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm would be one of the most impressive if they got rid of the horrible aliasing. Some of the techniques they use like stretching the models to create a key frame blurring effect are so cool.

I think that this gen there are really two things devs need to take care of: First, 30 fps should be the minimum, locked or not; second, fix the aliasing problems as it could make a normally great looking game look bad. Mirror's Edge on consoles has aliasing problems which ruin the clean aesthetic of it while the PC version lets you make things look proper, and it looks a lot better for it. Sadly, not all games have a PC port.

And for the people saying Galaxy is the best looking game, seriously, you're a bit ridiculous. What Galaxy does do is make me wish Nintendo did make a system on par with the 360/PS3. Galaxy looks incredible for a Wii/Xbox/PS2/Gamecube game, but it would look so much more incredible if they had more power to make the style more consistent. It's the same case with Wind Waker; it still looks great artistically and by no means bad, but if that style was done on more powerful hardware where the style could really come alive, that would be incredible. Just look at the Wii/Gamecube emulator thread and see how stunning Wind Waker looks in 720p.

Still, unless graphics are really bad that they become a hindrance on gameplay, it won't bother me too much (examples are the two mentioned before). For me, good graphics are usually always a positive that can make me enjoy a game more.

Supersampling AA has been a simple tick box in nHancer for years. So, yes, those shots are achieveable, you'll just need an awful lot of excess power to achieve it. Regardless, the edgeAA in Crysis (especially when set to 2) does a very, very good job if you're playing at a half decent resolution and since it doesn't dent performance in any meaningful way its the way to go imo.

I don't know what the hell I was playing then...

maybe my xbox is broken or my copy of PGR4 was an older revision or something because it looked nothing like these shots, especially the environments.

Even in photomode.

lol, I thought I was the only one thinking that.

My PGR4 also never looked that good. Maybe we're doing something wrong with the settings. :p

The Environments were the best thing about PGR4... Amazing.

I'd say that my choice for art style with realistic graphics would have to be Mirror's Edge.

KZ2 for general console graphics and lots of shit going on while looking good.

Crysis for the closest to reality.

The PS3 is the Goldilocks of gaming.

It's expensive but not too expensive.

It has great graphics but not too sharp or clinical.

It has a userbase worth porting multi-platform games to but not one so big that you can't feel special for owning it.

It's easy to communicate with your friends (text chat) but not too easy to communicate with racist morons (voice chat).

You may have been confused by the amount of crazies in this thread but this is not the Killzone thread. Please make a swift exit, its for your own good.

Killzone 2 was already unseated before it launched by Banjo, but no one played it.

I've got Banjo:N&B and i'm always amazed whenever i put it on and just watch the world it's in for a few minutes, standing down by the docks it always makes me smile at the utter beauty of it. But this thread seems to be guns and grit only so it won't count.

I mean reaching for 'realistic' graphics is all well and good but sometimes like PoP illustrates the fantastical almost always wins out for me.

Ugh... I have to buy N&B. I keep forgetting to pick it up.

yes @ text size. Even though I have a SDTV i wouldn't mind playing on it if the text wasn't so FREAKING SMALL.

Smaller text doesn't add that much to games. It is not a desktop workspace, it is not necessary.

No wonder. :p

Sorry couldn't resist it.:lol

Well, maybe not the best example, but imo the environment around the cars in GT5 looks so artificial.

indeed. game looked good, but jaggie as hell. photomode added AA.
same with PGR4.. jaggie game as well.

720p with 2xAA is not perfect but not what i'd call jaggy. Uncharted IS jaggy on my setup (even moreso than gears) yet people keep bringing up pr screens with 16x AA to demonstrate how good the game looks, that's not fair game either. GT5 photo mode pics posted here show the incredible modeling and lighting the game features, but ingame it's actually jaggier than pgr4. I guess we either accept pr shots and photomode pics for every game or ban them completely.

either way i really hope 1920x1080 stays for a while (besides, there really is no point going much higher than that on anything smaller than 60", from a distance that wouldn't kill your eyes) so that devs can stop pursuing higher resolutions and concentrate on AA. No matter how high res you get, without some good AA you'll always see some jagginess, and that's always going to hurt the overall look.
We're getting a fair amount of 4XAA 720p in latest releases (RE5, GRID for example) so i'd expect 4x 1080p to be a standard next gen with games featuring 8xaa as well.

about PGR4, don't make me grab my camera and take a pic of the screen before and after rendering photomode version of the same scene; just trust the difference really isn't that big. Of course, to obtain such results you have to tweak a few settings (contrast, vignetting, motion blur and dof) but those are all effects which are displayed effortlessly in real time too.
