Best in game sound this gen?

I think Bad Company 2 from what I have played. The sound quality in Battlefield 3 is excellent, but the mix is complete shit with sounds close to the player having much less presence then they actually should. BC2 I can listen to people moving through bushes - BF3 I can't even hear a person running up behind me.

Battlefield 3 is on another level from all other games when it comes to audio. I can't even fathom now sound design can get better than that. I need to replay the Dead Spaces now that I have surround sound headphones.

Battlefield 3 and Bad Company 2. Nothing else comes close.

Gonna disagree. I can hear a guy reloading in a nearby building 15-20 feet away on my setup, and footsteps aren't an issue.

Gotta cast a vote for Portal 2. Beyond the generally incredible music, vocal work, and ambient sound, little touches like how sensors would sing little victory songs when you activated them and the music would dynamically change as you solved various puzzles blew my mind.

Three laser room solution: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X3rl4_Hevpc

Just a few examples - and often times you'd only hear like 2 seconds of these songs at a time blended with the regular soundtrack. The attention to detail was outstanding, and the quality of all elements was through the roof. This isn't even to mention the Turret Song, Want You Gone, etc.

Now I want to play Portal 2 again.

Amnesia has some interesting, high quality sound effects that are quite the treat to listen to with some nice headphones on. It was one of the hype points of the game.

In CS you really have to know the game to know just how good the sound is, but still it does not stand out, it may be extremely accurate, and you can tell where the person is and what gun they just reloaded/swapped, but it doesn't really stand out like BF did for me, CS is more like basic/accurate sound, the sound doesn't have the depth that BF does.

IF BF3 can't even do basic footsteps, why give a shit? This is the reason why I hate CSS.

Do they have to be realistic? I love a good sound effect that's the invention of thought more than I like field recording.

Battlefield 3, with a dolby surround headset the sound in mp matches are an awesome experience.

Demons souls has a very inmersive sounds.

And dead space 1 and 2 scared the shit out of me witn the headset.

In the in game podcast for MGS4 (more games should do stuff like that) I think they talked about spending a week just to get the sound of one window breaking, which would only play that once with that one specific window that the player may not even break.

That's detail.

I really enjoy Super Street Fighter 4 AE (latest version for all characters). Great cast of voice actors for both Japanese and English. Awesome sound effects. I'm probably a bit biased since it's the game I've sunk the most time into this gen but I'm still amazed by the sound.

My second choice would have to be AC:R. Every year I feel the sound, along with the sights, really bring you into that world. I could walk around for hours doing nothing and still be content.

Battlefield 3. U kno they did sound right when I'm freaking amazed I can hear a tree fall down and hear every single detail in the middle of a firefight.

Oh this too, especially Boletaria, incredibly atmospheric.

Tower of Latria was also amazing sound wise...another reason why DS is such an incredible game.

Other games with great sound design besides the BF series & Demon's Souls are Dead Space 1/2, Condemned, Limbo and Amnesia.

Battlefield 3, hands down. The sound of a bullet hitting the concrete close to you really makes you realize how fucking much it would hurt to get hit by one IRL.

Two absolute standouts in this field:

Forza Motorsport 4- Amazing sounds that capture almost every little detail associated with all things cars and racing. Brutal, raw and menacing.

Battlefield 3- The crackle of gunfire, the jolting thuds of tank rounds, the RPG's whizzing past your ears, the explosions..etc sound and feel terrifyingly real. Virtual war at it's best.

That's also surely bullshit. Come on, a week to record a window breaking? How long did it take them to catch those hilarious death screams?

They tellin' lies son.

It goes to show you how good BF3 sounds when it's mentioned 100 times in this thread already. It amazes each night I play the game like last night when I could hear gunfire coming to the right on me on Grand Bazaar so I start checking around but thought it sounded a little different. I walk up ahead a little big and then get out in the open where I'm not surrounded by buildings and then I hear a huge fight going on right to the left of me. So that whole time when I was walking up the street, it was the sound of that fight echoing and reverberating off the buildings to the left of me so it sounded like I was surrounded and was in immediate danger. No game can do the things it does when each and every room sounds different.

It's no surprise based on BC1 and BC2 also being so great, but DICE has always focused on sound more than other developers. Even BF2 was good at the time because I remember having to try out the X-Fi sound and then falling in love with it. All their games have good gunfire sounds too instead of the really low bass games still out there today. There needs to be some pop or boom to the gun. :D

Does sound effects also include ambience sound design? Because if that's the case...

Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days is my pick. Mona Mur did some fantastic ambient work that sounded downright Gaspar Noe in parts. Most people won't have remembered, but it is a stunning addition to the blown-out chaos of the game.

Get a load of this. I wouldn't classify it as an OST, as directed by the OP, but it's an applicable soundscape that meshes incredibly with the ambience noise of backalley Shanghai.

Not sure if serious ...

Skate was outstanding. Don't know about best though since I haven't dabbled with BF3 yet. But it's certainly up there.

Edit: Along with Amnesia, yes!

Edit: Oh, both Dead Space and Condemned were also great shit. Scary through sound design, basically. Good times.
