That's exactly what I did and what I intend on doing.
And till that day comes my 360 will serve me well.

360:

-Lost Odyssey
-Enchanted Arms
-Oblivion with expansions

-Mass Effect
.
I would have to say 360. You can more than likely get all the bolded games for under $30. You can get him the premium and Blue dragon.

Then when Fable 2 comes out you can play co-op with him.

360 easily:
- Lost Odyssey
- Infinite Undiscovery
- Blue Dragon
- Tales of Vesperia
-
Star Ocean 4
- Eternal Sonata
- Mass Effect

I dont know, seems pretty obvious to me.

This is just a general list pulling from a master release date archive, but something to start picking apart perhaps:

PS3:
-Disgaea 3
-Two Worlds
-Fallout 3
-Rise of the Argonauts
-Valkyria Chronicles
-DC Universe
-FF XIII
-FF vs XIII
-Gothic IV
-Last Remnant
-Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2
-White Knight Chronicles
-X Quest
-Alpha Protocol
-Alien -- RPG Project [untitled] Sega
-Big Huge Games RPG [untitled] THQ

XB360:
-Spectral Force 3
-Age of Conan
-Sacred 2
-Defense Grid: The Awakening
-Fable 2
-Fallout 3
-Two Worlds
-Champions Online
-Elveon
-Gothic IV
-Spectral Diario
-Tales of Vesperia
-X Quest
-Alpha Protocol
-Dungeon Hero
-Alien -- RPG Project [untitled] Sega
-Big Huge Games RPG [untitled] THQ
-Borderlands

Disclaimer: This is from IGN so don't scream at me if these are not actual RPGs.

Pretty much. Everyone seems to be relying on that being the big RPG, which then opens gates to others...mainly JRPGs. People forget though...It doesn't have Dragon Quest backing it up this time either. Not to mention its coming out far later in this gen then pervious. Not to mention the recent increase of importance with the Western market. Not to mention the increase of WRPGs acceptance on consoles.:lol
Allot of people are still in the train of thought because it did well on the PS2 its going do the same on the PS3. When we have no idea.

So this question is a blank for the most part. We don't know. PS3 isn't taking off in Japan. The Western market seems to be the prime market now too for quite a few Japanese developers too. We don't know how the ball is going fall.

If you want to get him a system for RPGs now and long term, X360 seems like the better choice to me. If you'd get a PS3 now he'd probably wind up playing the waiting game for FFXIII until at least 2009 when the price will be lower anyway. It doesn't seem like Microsoft is going to stop paying for 360 jrpgs anytime soon, so you might as well enjoy it.

also this entire post.

yeah, because that's a HORRENDOUS bet to make, considering how horrible square's track record with that game has been.

I took out all of the multiplatform titles. If it wasn't for your Iron Giant avatar I would be a very unhappy person.

Valkyria Chronicles on 360 confirmed?

Whoopsie

That's actually a very hard question. I have no idea (and am happy that I can get both). Intuitively I'd still go with PS3, but cerebrally I'd argue for the 360 on the basis of what it has right now in terms of releases and announcements.

Mass Effect 2 and 3 say hello.
Oh yes they do, yes they do.

If I had to pick NOW, I would pick the 360. It has some good jRPGs, but nothing too special, but the wRPG department is awesome, and it will continue to rise. Mass Effect Trilogy, Too Human Trilogy, Fable 2...couldnt miss out on those.

Waiting for the "Buy a PS3 AND a PC" replies regarding Mass Effect

However it is hard to say in the long term. Who knows what will come, which Games will be released on which platform, in the long term I would go with both :D

if you want western style rpgs i'd stick with pc or 360.
if you want Jrpgs i suggest picking up a ps3, allthough 360 has a few good jrpgs aswell.

Ps3 should get Eternal Sonata, Disgaea 3, and (hopefully) White Knight Story this year.

Is Valkyrie of the Battlefield scheduled for US release yet?

Well, its weight is limited in my decision. He'd tear through it in two weeks and be looking for the next thing.

I'd say PS3, because of Level 5, and Square Enix games in that order.

In addition to White Knight, I also read that Level 5 is trying to also release a game for their 10 year anniversary, maybe it's another Dark Cloud game, but their president didn't say wich game it were.

PS3 also got some untraditional rpg's wich you havn't mentioned, i.e. games like Folklore, and I also recomend a game like Untold Legends if he have someone to play together with locally (i.e. a visiting son), it's pretty boring to play alone, but awesome if you got someone to play with, that's more a hack'n slash game with RPG-elements, like the PS2-versions of Baldurs Gate.

And Bluray is awesome.

Yeah, Q3 2008. All hints seems to point to September.

OP is asking about an investiment, to choose a console which has to last for one whole gen, Rpg-wise. Not an easy choice, if you ask me.

none sadly. however, with FF aka the motherload still coming double fold, aswell as the new level5 rpg, valkyria chronicles, disgaea 3, aswell as 360 offerings like eternal sonata and tales of vesperia (not sure) i'm confident ps3 will be the leading rpg platform in Japan, wich basically seals the deal.

PS3 simply because of Final Fantasy 13 and FF13 versus. After millions of JRPG fans buys the system for FF, Square-Enix will further support those fans and cater to their audience with more games since FF will create a healthy JRPG ecosystem and the PS3 will be dirt cheap by then. And so will many other JRPG developers who are waiting for Final Fantasy to lead the charge before jumping in with their games. Final Fantasy sells systems, and then the system will sell games :P

Like I said it's just a general list of upcoming releases. It wasn't for you anyway, it was for the OP. ;P

Find out what his favorite JRPGs where from Ps2...... if they were Final Fantasy a Ps3 might be a better choice..... if they were games like Shadow hearts(they made Lost Odyssey), or the tales series it's 360 hands down. Personally

I've never really seen the huge hype behind FF... maybe because I've only ever finished FFX(liked),X-2(was okat best),XI(hated), and XII(hated). Lost Odyssey, the Tales series and Shadow Hearts 1/2 beat all of those imo for JRPGs.

I beat 90% of FFVII on a PC emulator but never completely finished it but it's most likely the exception.

FFVIII/FFIX I just couldn't get around to finishing.

I'm sure it'll be a great game, but I also consider Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, and Mass Effect to be great games. I just find it amusing that we know almost nothing about it besides some old video and artwork, and people think it's the second coming.

Long term the better answer is the PS3, simply because the 360 J-RPG flow will probably dry up sooner rather than later. But then your Dad plays the waiting game until at least Fall 2008 for a good selection of J-RPGs.

You should just hold off on any purchases until the last possible moment to see where the maximum potential will be. A lot of things can change in a few months.

actually... then you get all the hd rpgs. not a chance you're going to have all of the jrpgs, or even all of the console jrpgs.

this is going to be the most ridiculous console gen for jrpgs.

If you truly care about WRPGS then 360. If your just a slight fan but ultimately care about JRPGs more than anything...then possibly Ps3.

Personally a combination of Tales of Vesperia, Lost Odyssey, Fable 2, Mass Effect Trilogy, Too Human, and Fallout 3 dwarfs anything Ps3 has even announced thus far for me, but its all based on opinion.

So look at whats announced for now and base your opinion on that. Through 2009, I think its safe to say the 360 is the winner. Beyond that is a bunch of maybes...and should be's...but nothing definitive.

Ridiculous in what sense? Seems pretty sparse to me. Maybe it's just me, but I've had no interest in any of the current offerings until maybe the newest Tales game and White Knight Story (Chronicles whatever).

That really depends. If you're at all into Final Fantasy, PS3 is definitely the one to get. FFXIII is already looking to be a must play, so take that into consideration. Otherwise, the 360 has some excellent RPGs already. Oblivion (it's multiplatform, but still) and Mass Effect come to mind. I've heard good things about Lost Odyssey too. Looking to the future, the two Mass Effect sequels and Fable 2 ought to be strong titles. Infinite Undiscovery has potential as well.

You would put Level 5 over Square Enix?

Yeah, finnished Rogue Galaxy a month ago (in 3 sittings wich averaged 17 hours), and that changed my expectations from Level 5.
FF will offcourse have much better production values, and such, but I believe that L5 will do better in the gameplay-department, since I loved it in RG. :P

And isn't there another Persona game coming, or is it still a PS2-franchise?

Ps3 has eternal sonata too.
When though? I haven't seen anything about it in months.... infact last I heard there was a rumor it might only be a Ps3 Jpn release and never come to the states/Europe....

ridiculous in the sense that the games are almost sure to be all over the place (platform-wise), and there won't be an rpg console, or even (likely) a good pair of consoles for jrpgs:

microsoft has (wisely) assumed it's an important genre and is funding mistwalker and possibly other third parties to provide exclusive games.

sony has xiii, of course which exerts it's own rpg gravitational force of not-insignificant magnitude. also, disgaea has shown that more niche rpgs can sell on the platform.

wii is the only console selling really well in japan, and has a number of more quirky rpgs in the pipeline already (king story, fragile).

If you get him a non-40GB PS3, he can toss out his PS2. RPG's are still coming out for the PS2, and you always have the prospect of PS1 Classics (Wild Arms 2 will come some day ;_;).

Whichever one you pick, they both have a good selection. I'd see which titles you want to play more. If that doesn't help, I'd go with a PS3, blueray and no RROD say hi.

People keep mentioning a handful of games, but that really isn't what it's about. It's as much (or more) about quantity than quality.

I guess the long term question for me is whether FFXIII will create a thriving RPG ecosystem on PS3 over 2010-2011-2012, or whether the RPG ecosystem the 360 is developing now will gather steam and perpetuate enough to at least ensure multiplats in the US. 200k for Lost Odyssey last month is a step in the right direction.

If the consensus is that both will end up relatively split in this regard over the long term, then I guess the tradeoff is gameplay through 2009 on the 360 side VS blu ray on the PS3 side.

Currently the 360 is the better choice, but from a long term perspective the PS3 will lead the J-RPG genre, between the two. But the best idea is to wait it off, atleast until summer 08, to make a decision.
