In addtion, to Redline, I always suggest We are the Strange for threads like these. Isn't the best film, but it's a visual tour de force. So impressive this was a one man job.

Some really cool shots in this thread.

I'm watching Nightcrawler for the first time right now and I'm really liking the cinematography. All the darkness combined with a bunch of small light sources is pretty cool:

I'm with you. I loved the look of that movie for the very aesthetic reason you described.

This shot in Prisoners blew my mind last year (sorry, couldn't find a higher res).

And if you guys want to see something really gorgeous. Try to track down Thief (Micheal Mann) on Blu-Ray, that shit looks fucking amaaaaaazing. 1981, very artfully shot, but it also looks so clean that it could have been filmed yesterday. Like a time capsule.

Skyfall was balls

Funny how this shot is not actually in the movie, he drills a hole in the window before aiming there and you never get this fantastic image.

TRON Legacy was already mentioned but Oblivion from the same maker looks absolutely amazing. The ruined Earth, robot and vehicle design and the fabulous views from the Skytower set.

Zhang Yimou's work is really beautiful. Can't find any good house of flying daggers images especially the dance and the autumn to winter transition fight. Kind of surprised when I read it actually happened IRL. Hero and Curse of the Golden flower are incredibly impressive. The former almost painting like at times. Not sure about his recent works though.
Not sure if it's the right thread since there really isn't a cinematography film but when discussing Ghibli, I feel that their older works has a really nice aesthetic to it.The use of colours, shadows, line thickness etc feel soft and pleasing to the eye. Their recent works like the Wind Rises, Poppy on a hill, Ponyo however kind of looks too clean.

Kingdom of Heaven

I've recently kept on watching this film over and over. Great film. The one scene that probably stood out the most was Kerak when Balian wakes up. Love the colours used in that seen and the two armies about to collide.

Goemon is also a visual feast. While basically 99% greenscreen, it looks awesome. Sadly, I can't find a single trailer with a decent HD quality that really captures how good it looks. This is the best I could find. It's one of those movies were you can basically stop the movie anytime and get an artwork.

This movie was also kinda decent. He made a western movie that is going straight to VOD.

I'll throw a vote behind Dark City:

Everything from composition, lighting, symbolism and tone is just expertly put together. Some of the shots from the Neptune's Bounty scenes are just extraordinary.

Using my phone right now so can't access the pictures on the web but how did the first page go through without mentioning this movie.

- Oblivion

Stunning movie of recent times and yes I think visually it is better than Gravity, Prometheus, Star Trek and Interstellar from the recent ones.

For something a little different: Room in Rome.
If you do a googl image search, nsfw
I was in awe of the visuals basically the entire time.

For my own contribution; Collateral:

Collateral, as with all Mann movies post-Last of The Mohicans, looks better in motion due to how mobile his camera has become over the years. The moving framing and slight handheld bobs add a lot to the aesthetic which wasn't there in his earlier Kubrick influenced stuff.

A lot of great films already posted, I'll add Black Narcissus.

1947, yo!
Matte painting > CGI.

I watched this movie about 6-7 years ago knowing absolutely nothing except that it was a classic and had nuns in it... WOW, what an experience. A phenomenally great looking movie.

Oblivion was absolutely gorgeous. The way they filmed the scenes in the Sky Tower is really great.

Persona (1966)

There are so many amazing shots in Persona. Also many really nice shots of the outdoors too, which you don't really see here. It's probably my favorite Bergman film (that or Fanny and Alexander), and one of my favorite films overall.
