Best modern military FPS single player campaign?

While technically not a military shooter, if you haven't tried it yet I strongly recommend getting the new Wolfenstein.
 
It's Call of Duty 4. There are so many incredibly memorable missions in that game, Infinity Ward were just on fucking fire at that time, it was unreal.

I think they specifically talked about it during the snow level demo stuff at e3 (however long ago that was)? Idk, I might be remembering incorrectly.

I played through Medal of Honor because of some thread a couple of years back and was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the campaign. The standoff in the hut at the bottom of the valley was an intense set piece.
 
It's gotta be Crysis by FAR for me. Crysis 2 was great too. But Crysis... I must've replayed that game at least 10 times. I even enjoyed the last 3rd of it. Most people don't know how to make it fun to fight the aliens for some reason, but I had a blast with that. Crysis was all about player creativity.

Far Cry 2 is probably my second favorite, but that game had a lot of problems (and it may not count as military). There is something really special about it though. As with Crysis, this game is about creativity.

As far as linear action games go, I'll have to say Black Ops. Black Ops did it right by clearly not giving a fuck. Way over-the-top and obviously playtested to hell to keep the excitement up. It's like every time I got a little bored, something completely outrageous or ridiculous would start going down almost on queue. Very well put together imo.

If you want melodrama, I think Medal of Honor takes the cake for story. That game had me in tears.
 
My favorite ones are,

Call of Duty 4
Resistance 3
Spec ops the Line

Not in any order. They all had their own strengths and weaknesses. But these are the most memorable for me

It's not. Or shouldn't be for him. The only thing BF3/4 has over CoD is they don't have infinite "monster" spawns.

It's the monster closets that I can't stand. At least in BF4 you can clear out an area.

My current favorite has to be Wolfenstein but that alternative sci fi history
 
You should really give a chance to COD4, i really like modern warfare 2 and black ops for different reasons. Just don't play on veteran the first time because... jesus christ. I loved the multiplayer of world at war, but never played the campaign, is it any good (even though it isn't modern). The newer cods i didn't play, but advanced warfare looks cool too.


MW1 is a definite standout in my opinion, the maps are fun, the story had cool twists. All in all a great rollercoaster ride!

BF4 comes to mind as the worst example of FPS shooter campaigns, at least in recent years.

It's virtually on rails. There's moments where I became so frustrated because the game was trying to direct me through what was basically a cutscene with an interactive camera, and I kept bumping into idling NPCs.

I'd say it's a toss up between Bad Company 2 and COD4... but maybe that's because those are the only strictly military shooters I've played.

If not, then KZ2.
 
CoD4: Modern Warfare

A good story with good characters all built on good FPS gameplay. Nothing amazing, except that it feels polished and competent all the way through in a way that makes other military FPS games seem lacking.



Spec Ops The Line

A bad story with no characters and some of the worst TPS gameplay I have ever suffered through. Really just a garbage game that hopes to be some kind of homage to Heart of Darkness but fails in every conceivable way, instead revealing a cynical attempt at passing off shit design as an intentional meta-narrative. Don't be afraid to try it, but don't be afraid to toss it in the trash after a few hours either.

This is as far from 'whack-a-mole' as you'll ever get, and one of the last military/squad shooters that really did justice to it's setting and theme. Nothing else compares for me.

i guess but that's not saying much.

There's not much you can do with a modern shooter in terms of story or gameplay. A single player modern shooter shouldn't even exist, I've always thought they were terrible

but people need their 4 hour mode or a game isn't a real game
 
I really have no idea what recommend, they are all on some level of bland and dull. It's amazing how popular this type of game-making became.

I got MOH for a dollar in the EA humble bundle. According to Steam, I made it 42 minutes before giving up on it. I saw no difference from COD.

You had nukes, terrorists, and you had fantastic loading screens.

I had a bit of fun with Rainbow Six Vegas.
 
First modern Medal of Honor. It took some real operations, mixed it with some COD-like moments and fulfilling gunplay, and gave it a really good tone with one of the later missions actually making me feel really happy and relieved for what happened due to the way it was handled. Basic description from what I remember down below

Your squad got ambushed on a mission in the hills of Afghanistan and you were trapped in a small house trying to hold off a seemingly endless wave of Taliban fighters. The mission kept going and going making you wonder if it was ever going to end since you were close to dying numerous times just to have some Apaches come over the ridge-line and save your asses right before the enemies finally overrun your position. Just the way it was done with the music and how they portrayed the characters made it really special to me, but that might be the military guy in me.

There's been some good ones, but nothing as good as that for me. I was genuinely mad when it ended because it felt special yet it's extremely underrated. That's why the sequel hurt me even more. :(
 
I enjoyed MoH campaign. It didn't feel as polished as Call of Duty but I appreciated its more slower pace and grounded approach compared to most other shooter campaigns. The pc version probably looks really nice.
 
I know OP doesn't want COD but if you want my pick for the title question, I have to go with a lot of other posters:

COD4 Modern Warfare.

I haven't really played much COD since the 1st MW and I never enjoyed any of their SPs... but that original MW? That was a really good FPS. The Black Hawk Down 'flying tribute' or All Ghillied Up? Or some of those environments, like those Russian power lines in the mountains... It was good stuff. Only COD that I ever put more than a few dozen hours into.


If I could pick one other older game, it would be the original Ghost Recon.

I like the building up of your team, the planning of each mission (especially the original approach), and some of the wilderness maps were pretty awesome. There was a really good defensive mission where you protect some UN peace keepers along a road, and lots of other beautiful hills and forests.
 
Ghost Recon: Island Thunder, although it's far from "recent".

And although it's not an FPS, Full Spectrum Warrior ranks amongst the most realistic modern military shooters.
