Best, most improbable sports comebacks

Tim Tebow and his team coming back in the 4th quarter to tie up and eventually win the games they won, when some of those games were technically already over, in the opponents favor, with barely any time left and the ball was in the opposing teams hands.

while the red sox coming back from 0-3 is pretty memorable...

the intro of MLB the show 2012 also covers something crazy.... this isn't a simple couple day comeback though, it was a comeback from two teams thought to be all but eliminated from the playoffs coming back to make the playoffs on the last day of the season.

i'm not a fan of any of the teams involved, but I can't remember a last day of the season that was more exciting.

As a fan of both the Rays and Cardinals, that was without a doubt one of the most exciting nights in my life. My family and I were huddled behind the TV and woke up the neighborhood yelling when Longoria hit the homerun to what is now 162 Landing.

As for comebacks beyond that, another great comeback was only a few weeks later:

Game 6, 2011 World Series. The amount of stress drinking I did watching that was absurd. My biggest complaint about all of it was how little emotion Joe Buck is capable of emoting.

The whole month was crazy. The Rays taking 6 of 7 games in September to close in on the WC and then coming back after being down 7-0 in the final game was amazing.

Brisbane Lions 52-point come back win in the AFL a couple of years ago is pretty great

And of course Essendon vs. North Melbourne in 2001

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Essendon_v_Kangaroos_(2001_AFL_season)

Essendon were 69 points down midway through the second quarter and came back to win 171 to 159.

In cricket there was Faulkner hitting 25 runs off of the last 9 balls to win the game

And I don't watch soccer, but this video is pretty amazing

Manchester City winning the Premier League Title in 2012

13 May 2012 Manchester City 3 – 2 Queens Park Rangers

1 team playing for relegation, 1 to win EPL

One of most amazing matches I have seen with last min comeback, hyped as hell.

Manchester United vs Bayern Munich - 1999 Champions League Final

Nothing will top this.

Euro 2008 Turkey vs Czech Republic. 2-0 down, 3 goals in 15 minutes to win.

I remember watching this game live and being totally legit shook. It had everything. Goals. The most improbable comeback in the world. Goalkeepers getting sent off, players on the bench being yellow carded. I remember ITV's commentator saying something like "Martians could land their spaceship on the pitch right now and it wouldn't surprise me."

IIRC the Czechs were also ranked in the top 5 at that point as well.

beyond that if I recall right the timing was crazy. That line from the red sox broadcast about now it was up to if the rays lose was only like a minute before Longoria put the rays into the playoffs.

which don't forget, boston blew that game in the bottom of the ninth.

and if you look at the atlanta game you will also see they blew the game in the 9th as well. and tampa tied the game in the bottom of the 9th.... i mean so many meaningful moments at the last moment @_@

twas crazy.

One of my personal favs was the "boo-hoo" game between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Ottawa Senators.

Owen Nolan vs. The Flu: 2004

A stomach virus forces three key Senators from the lineup in a February game in Ottawa, but their absences do not stop home side from taking a big lead. The Senators lead 3-0 by the middle of the first period, and build a 4-0 lead four minutes into the second. And then? They collapse. Toronto scores three in the second and one more in the third. Owen Nolan, who is also ill, scores in overtime and offers Ottawa no sympathy. “Boo-hoo,” he says. “I don’t care. We were tired, too, and found a way to battle back and win after being down by four. They wouldn’t be feeling sick if they hung on to win. I’m sure they’ve got their excuses ready to go.”

I remember it because I was at a buddies place and the Leafs were down 4-0, and we were talking about splitting and going to a bar or something but I said, "what if we miss the greatest comeback ever?" Improbably we got one!

God I went to the bar to watch Arsenal vs Reading because I had no power in my house. The hilarious part was had I actually had power at my home, I most likely would have just left at half time.

Also Arsenal 2 0 Liverpool from 1989. It was the last match of the season between the league leaders (Liverpool) and the 2nd place team (Arsenal). Arsenal needed to win by at least 2 goals in order to win the league not on goal differential, but goals scored. The circumstances for this match were incredibly rare and we will almost certainly never see it again. Liverpool had not lost by more than one goal at home in three years and Arsenal had not won away to Anfield in fifteen years. Michael Thomas scored the title winning goal deep into extra time for Arsenal.

I was going to post Miracle at the New Meadowlands. I remember watching that live and going nuts. Shame we went on to lose in the Wild Card round anyway.

Regular season games shouldn't be allowed. Yeah they are fun, but they mean absolutely nothing in the long run.

Buffalo Bills vs. Houston Oilers January 3rd 1993.

To the person that posted the picture of the "Drive" thank you for bringing back nightmares to my 9 year old self. Rich Karlis missed that field goal in OT. That barefoot fuck!

Peyton Manning and the Colts on MNF against the Bucs in 2003.

Down 21 with 5 minutes to go, he led them to three touchdowns and sent the game to OT, where they kicked a FG to win.

That was the beginning of the end for us.

...

...the long, long, painful, neverending end.

For me it has to be the Sox coming back from 0-3 to beat the Yankees on their way to their first WS win in forever. You rarely if ever see those done

Can't think of anything better. Biased since I'm a Boston fan, but that was something special. Down 3-0 had never been done before and there were so many insane moments. The Sox getting to Rivera, Dave Roberts' steal, Ortiz's clutch hits, Schilling's bloody sock. It was an unforgettable series.
This was the first thing that popped into my head as well. This series is legendary, and will always rank as one of the best series in baseball history.

Funny enough, the World Series that year was a complete snoozefest and nothing more than a waste of time and energy.

No, its The Comeback.

The Comeback was an NFL playoff game between the Buffalo Bills and the Houston Oilers played January 3, 1993. It featured the Bills recovering from a 32-point deficit to win in overtime, 41–38, and as of January 2015 it remains the largest comeback in NFL history

Guess this would be right under The Comeback :), what a game. I still remember the thread flipping it's shit over this.

Really hope Luck gets his someday. There is no bias in this post.

I'm based so my post is this. In 2006 the Dodgers were down 9-5 in the bottom of the ninth to the Padres when they hit 4 consecutive home runs to tie the game. Then after going down one in extra innings Nomar hits a two run shot to win the game. It was absolutely insane.

"Freese hits it in the air to center. We. . . will see you. . . tomorrow night!"

That's Buck's ENTIRE call for a walk off 11th inning homerun in the World Series.

Part of me likes that he doesn't force his voice into the highlights and that they typically mix the audio to increase the crowd noise, so it's a little more like you're there. But really, a good broadcaster is still so much better. I've gone back to watch Eli Manning's crazy comeback with the Giants in the Superbowl, and the replay just does nothing. Buck literally doesn't say anything. It's insane.

Couldn't disagree more. All I hear is 'soak it in'.

What else can a man say after one of the greatest games ever?
