Best music tracks of last gen?

SCDC-00387_front.jpg

Phantom Dust - Plastic People [Visions HQ]
Phantom Dust - Club Baroness
Phantom Dust - Arsenal

Plastic People is an awesome electronic and string variation of Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata" and Club Baroness is a great variation of Bizet's Habanera from the Carmen Opera. I can't quite place the Arsenal track, but it's awesome.

preach it brother preach it!

such an amazing soundtrack.

The "Boss Battle" track from FF12 was amazing, and a rare standout on a pretty average soundtrack.

"Rave on" from killer 7
The Metroid Prime title screen
The guitar stuff from MGS3 when the evation meter drops.
Credits theme from SOTC
The HL2 soundtrack
TP soundtrack, especially the piano song when you
carry Midna while she's dying
. And the final battle
phase 4
and of course the song during the credits.

Shadow of the Colossus
MGS2: Sons of Liberty
Onimusha: Warlords (Rising Sun Tracks)
Onimusha 2 (Opening & Ending were great)
Halo 1&2
Ninja Gaiden
Jet Set Radio Future

I can't really pick out tracks in particular, but certain games overall yes...

Devil May Cry 3 overall with that techno-goth-rock type stuff is AWESOME...
MGS3 is tied for first to me... that last boss battle music is epic!
Kingdom Heart 1/2... I'll add both in here, because I liked their overall soundtracks in general... the remixed Disney songs, with the original stuff, and things like Simple and Clean, as well as Passion were great...

What about PSP?
Initial D for PSP overall rocks, my favorite music in animated series by far...

the Where the **** did this song come from?" in game moment goes to "Bitter Dance" in Star Ocean 3... It caught me off guard and actually laughed from it...

Most of my favorites were from the PSone, but I'll go with Shenmue, Silent Hill 3, Biohazard: Code Veronica, Biohazard 4 and Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne and DDS. JGR's tracks were hit or miss, but some of those were good as well.

Xenosaga II's opening theme

One of my favorites too.

Others I really enjoyed...

Tokyo Revelation - SMT: Nocturne
Revived Power - SotC
Divine Identity - DDS2
No Knowledge of Wisdom - VP2:S

Shenmue.................................. Tears Of Seperation
Shenmue 2................................ Wave Sound of Morning
Jet Grind Radio........................... Miller Ball Breaker
Panzer Dragoon Orta.................. Ancient Weapon 1
Shadow Of The Colossus............. The title Screen OMG
MGS3: Snake Eater/Subsistence.. Debriefing
Tekken 5................................... Moonlit Wilderness (VS mode in T5DR has the old T5 stages :D )
God Of War............................... The Great Sword Bridge Of Athena
Soul Calibur.............................. The Cursed Image

Tekken 5:
Supercharged
Snow Castle
Amnesia
Call of the Inferno

Ico:
You were there

MGS2 Theme

All DMC1 themes. I really didn't like the fact there were lyrics in the DMC3 music.

Devil May Cry - Pubic Enemy, Final Penetration (this game has some of the oddest track names ever)
Devil May Cry 3 - Vergil Appearance ~ Vergil Battle
Final Fantasy X - To Zanarkand, Hurry!!, Normal Battle, Path of Repentance, People of the North Pole
Final Fantasy X-2 - Eternity ~Memory of Lightwaves, YuRiPa Battle No. 1, 1000 Words
Kingdom Hearts - Monstrous Monstro, Hand in Hand, Hollow Bastion, Scherzo di Notte
Kingdom Hearts II - Passion, Dearly Beloved, The Encounter, Byte Bashing, Sacred Moon, Deep Drive
Metal Gear Solid 2 - Tanker Alert Theme, "Yell Dead Cell"
Resident Evil 4 - the another order, Serenity
Shadow of the Colossus - The Opened Way
Soul Calibur II - Raise Thy Sword, Hubris
Soul Calibur III - Time Marches On, EphemeralDream, Forsaken Sanctuary

Game Boy Advance
Castlevania: HoD - Successor of Fate, Chapel of Dissonance, To the Center of the Demonic Castle
Castlevania: AoS - Ruined Castle Corridor, Chapel, You're Not Alone
Fire Emblem 7 (Sword of Flame) - Ooening - History Unveiled, Strike, An Unexpected Caller
Mario & Luigi: SS - Teehee Valley
Mega Man Zero - Crash!, Neo Arcadia
Phoenix Wright 1 - Pressing Pursuit ~ Cornered, Objection! 2001, Courtroom Lobby
Phoenix Wright JfA - Trial, Objection! 2002, Search ~ Core 2002,

I could have put down more, but considering no one will read it, I decided not to.

Blasphemy! I'm loading most of the songs you mentioned in iTunes now (need new tunes). Keep 'em coming!

the remastered albums of Megaman Zero are really awesome, any fan of Videogame music should give a listen to at least Physis (Megaman Zero 4 remastered album) which I consider the best

FF12: Large number of the tracks in this are outstanding mood music and orchestration ala...

SotC: Not having this listed is a crime.

SMT3, DDS1&2: The jarring juxtaposition of bouncy techno mixed with foreboding ambience in Nocturne was very nice. The boss music was awesome Metal, like the DDSes. Twin Guitar Attack Metal Boss Music == Throwdown Time. :D

ZoE2: So much good stuff. Needs a sequel, but that's stating the obvious.

Dragon Roost Island, Wind Waker.

the only video game tune id ever listen to in real life.

i recently played a bit more through wind waker again (finished it a few years ago) and the music is stunning. the TP soundtrack pales in comparison - i can't remember any of the tracks except the hyrule field theme and ordon village. WW has the outset, sailing, dragon roost, and the awesome wind temple song (amongst many others).

i'd put WW up there for last gen as well as metroid prime.

I was gonna post a big list but then I decided to just sum it up to two of my favorites.

Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker - Ocean
Silent Hill 3 - end of small sanctuary

Few of my favorite tracks from last gen :

Killer 7 : Dissociative Identity (ending)

Metroid Prime : Underwater Frigate Reactor Core
Metroid Prime : Phendrana Drifts
Metroid Prime : Tallon Overworld

Metroid Prime 2 : Submerged Temple

Zelda Twilight Princess : Ending Credits 1 + End Credits 2
Zelda Twilight Princess : Boss Room Calm
Zelda Twilight Princess : Title Screen

If there is an error message displaying while you try to download one of these songs, it's probably because I've exceeded my bandwith usage for the day ; so in this case, if you really want the file, you could obviously just try tomorrow.

Unimlited SaGa: Battle Theme IV
Such a horrible game. Such great music.

FFX-2: Eternity
The only good thing on that piece of crap soundtrack.

This is the only correct answer.

I have 3 different versions of this song.

In-Game
Piano rendition
Live band performance

All kick ass

I'll just do RPG's.

Also, this thread forced me to load up four OST's and quickly skip through them so I could remember which ones I liked (many of the song titles I forgot, too)

* = my favorite on the OST

Final Fantasy X:
-Otherworld :rock
-This is Your Story
-Besaid Island (specifically, the piano version)
-The Sight of Spira
-Illusion
-Sprouting Confusion
-Brass de Chocobo
-Thunder Plateau
-Path of Repentance
-Time of Judgement
-Challenge
-Decisive Battle* (one of the best songs in the series)

Final Fantasy XII:
-The Dream to be a Sky Pirate
-Rabanastre (Downtown)
-Clash of Swords
-Seeking Power
-Battle on the Bridge (nice to see an old FF track revived)
-Abandoning Power
-The Stillshrine of Miriam*
-Time for a Rest
-The Salikawood
-The Cerobi Steppe

Although I didn't enjoy the game that much, FFXII has a lot of good songs on the OST.

Valkyrie Profile 2:
-Overture to Destiny
-To the Eternal Land
-Memories, Sunken Deeper
-Under the All-Powerful Divine Protection*
-Never Surrender
-The Meditation of Many Years
-Disturb the Doubtful Sleep
-How Wicked Ruler
-Weakness
-Ascend into the True Faith

Dragon Quest VIII (Some of these are from previous DQ's, but I really like the way they sound in this game's SS.)
-Overture
-Strange World ~ Marching Through the Fields
-Chatting
-Remembrances
-Majestic Castle ~ Gavotte de Château
-Poet's World
-Memories of an Ancient Ocean
-Sanctuary
-Heavenly Flight

No specific favorite for DQ8, they all kind of flow together nicely.

Splinter Cell Chaos Theory: Amon Tobin - The Lighthouse.

Silent Hill 2: Akira Yamaoka - Null Moon

Phantom Dust: Vincent Gallo - Yes I'm Loney.

Each comes from a great artist. Each masterfully encapsulates the tone of their respective soundtracks. They're all great pieces of music on their own. And in the case of Akira and Amon, their usual production is through the roof-- just incredible stuff.

IMO there are some tracks that might not be the best, but in some way became the "soundtrack" for every system.

On the PS2, I think the millennium craze + the console monolithic design + that Tekken Tag Tournament intro theme killed the Dreamcast, while "The Concept of Love" from JSRF represented the idea of what Xbox seemed to be (at launch) for lots of Dreamcast/Sega fans (which didn't materialized in the long run)...

There is nowhere near enough Shenmue love in this thread. One of the most epic game soundtracks ever.

But otherwise Halo, Halo 2, PSO, JSRF, SSBM, Chaos Theory and the Zelda games.

Z.O.E2 - Beyond The Bounds (Mitsuto Suzuki 020203 Mix Feat.Sana)
Ace Combat 4 - Megalith
Halo 2 - Heretic Hero
Panzer Dragoon Orta - Fallen Grounds

I also like the main them from Tomb Raider Legend. My list is short, I still have OST's I need to listen to.

More ->

Killer 7 : Host Personality

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles : Sad Monster

Super Smash Bros Melee : Opening

I'm bound to leave out a few worthy picks with a question like this, but here's what I can remember:

-"Dancing With Domz," Christophe Heral, Beyond Good & Evil
-"Emoticon," Masafumi Takada, Killer 7
-"Rave On," Masafumi Takada, Killer 7
-"Menu Theme," Kenji Yamamoto, Metroid Prime
-"Joe The Hero," Masakazu Sugimori/Masami Ueda, Viewtiful Joe
-"Main Theme," Mark Griskey, Gladius
-"Falling Hail," Motoi Sakuraba, Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean
-"Chaotic Dance," Motoi Sakuraba, Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean
-"Boss Room Calm," Toru Minegishi/Asuka Ohta/Koji Kondo, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
-"Title Screen," Toru Minegishi/Asuka Ohta/Koji Kondo, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

"No eyes, no ears, no nose..."

Still can't get it out of my head! Argghh!!!

"No mouth, no hands, no shape, no shape ...."

Thanks for ruining my afternoon, I'd all but forgotten that one :lol

Shadow of the Colossus wins by a wide margin. Counterattack and the full ending theme (Epilogue~Hope~The Sunlit Earth) are my favorite pieces. It's all pretty much incredible, though.

p.s. people that mention twilight princess fail.

Oh CRAP how can I forget:

Tekken 2 - Emotionless Passion

Someone find it and listen to it. One of the greatest and most powerful tunes ever.

Top Bottom
