Best old games you played in 2025?

SMT IV and Strange Journey are some of the best SMT games out there.

I am planning to replay a lot of those Atlus RPGs once Thor comes in! Devil Summoner and the two Devil Survivor games were also great.
Don't skip on Digital Devil Saga if you can. Top tier SMT games imo.

My GOTY 2025

One of the best games that I ever play

I replayed this a few years ago and the first 2/3 of this game are as good as any Final Fantasy. I feel like the final act takes a dive narratively, but still an amazing game. And I love the world.

Also, this thread is great. No matter how crappy modern gaming can be at times, and with some of the crappy trends on the horizon (i.e. the desire to make everything digital and/or to push everything to cloud gaming) there's still a ton out there for me to check out that I haven't gotten a chance to play.

Beat Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts last week on my SNES + CRT setup.

Now I'm trying to beat Zombies Ate My Neighbors.

I dunno... sometimes I think I just like hurting myself by playing these hard-as-hell games, lol.

Never played that one. Good to hear you liked it. I'm holding out for the Kiwami version coming up in February.
I definitely can recommend it. Okinawa was great as a setting and was one of the more memorable locations in the series, at least for me. I'm curious of its reception now and how it will compare to Hawaii map from recent games as I haven't got around to them yet. I also really enjoyed the cast, Rikiya especially was an awesome character. Looks like Kiwami 3 might also fix some pacing issues the original had with them delegating the orphanage stuff to its own separate thingie rather than sprinkling it into the main story

Always the same games for me:
Fallout New Vegas (Would add part 1 and 2, but once you know what to do you're done in 10 to 30 min).
System Shock
Deus Ex
Hitman
RCT2

How old? Everything that came out last year and before or 15-20 years (or more) ago?

Not too old:
- The Messenger
- Cadence of Hyrule
- Ori and the Blind Forest

Older
- Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon
- Pikmin
- Metroid Zero Mission

Bioshock 1. The idea was to play through the whole trilogy again, but I got bored during Bioshock 2 and stopped. Always meant to get around to that game's Minerva's Den, but never did. Back in the day, I loved all three of the Bioshock games, and the first one does still very much hold up.

In the middle of a Prime replay and fuck Metroid Prime 2 i so good. Refined from the original but with the light and dark stuff and trickier bosses with a lot more of an edge.

Prime 3 tho has a lot more cutscenes than I remember lol

Bioshock 2 really picks up in the last third of the game. Worth the slog IMO.

Favorite old game of 25 is Doom 3: BFG. Played in 3D with XR glasses so was a neat experience. Like going back in time on a 3D TV. Doom 3 has a good origins story and surprised how much it grabbed me. Much more than the narration in The Dark Ages actually. Gameplay feels charming in a nostalgic way.

I think I have replayed most of the MegaDrive games in the NSO using that awesome NSO MegaDrive controller. Most of these games are excellent and stand the test of time.

This is why I would like for SEGA to add a ton more but it looks like it's super dead right now, and this sucks !

Also replayed Shining Force III all 3 scenarios, Final Fantasy VIII and Panzer Dragoon Saga this year. Timeless masterpieces.

On my 125th walkthrough of Skyrim.
Never played a pure mage.
I learned quickly never to bring companions along because they always get in front of me as I'm about to cast a devastating fire spell.

any suggestion how to make it click? Its ALWAYS being recommended to me, and I try, but I get bored within 5 minutes of it.
Honestly? I had to stop being an impatient asshole and get into a rhythm.

Instead of searching for the fun early on, I treated my first 5-10 runs as just low-stakes experimentation and information gathering — learning about the movement, weapons, boons, etc. Then, I was able to find my preferred "playstyle" so to speak, and start having a blast thereafter.

Not sure if that'll work for you, but that's what got me over the hump.

I just looked up a video on it and couldn't understand what was going on.
Yeah, many games from this time, especially anything somewhat complex, leans pretty heavy on the manual to explain not only the gameplay but also what you see on the screen.

This is a game designed by the god-father of tactical strategy games, Julian Gollop, it predates Laser Squad and OG X-com. I haven't played it but it would probably be interesting to experience his ideas in a more raw format.

YS origin.

Being a long time YS fan, I have not played Origin because Adol isn't the protagonist - but ended up enjoying the game throughout! All 3 characters.

Also reminded me of certain things that I totally forgot regarding Darm Tower. I had not played Ys 1 and 2 Chronicles ver - so looking forward to play it, as my Ys 1 and 2 experience is limited to old version like MSX and PC Engine versions.
Replayed Oath in Felghana on PS5 during the holidays. Do you have a PSTV? Best way to replay Ys.

Riven - remaster
Condemned criminal origins, still amazing.
Dark messiah - doesnt hold up as well as i remembered but still great and interactive

While I still don't think Prime 2 is quite as good as the first, it's a game that gets better every time I play it. I really appreciate that they made a game aimed squarely at Metroid fans who know what the series is about and don't need any hand holding. A masterclass in knowing your audience.

haven't finished the game, i really want to finish it, but dang i dont have much time lately, can only playing shorter games.
i really like Digital Devil Saga and Nocturne style graphic, the gameplay also rocking solid, and the story is mindboggling so good...

duh, i really need me time to playing more games...

There is a learning curve, but it's 2 to 8 wizards (players or computer controlled) casting spells and summoning creatures, fighting and the last one alive wins. It is a bit complex, it even has a World Tendency system like Demon's Souls.

Legend of Mana : what a game... You need a guide for pretty much everything though. Placing the terrain as to optimise shops and not miss any quest? Guide. Feeding your pet so it's not completely useless? Guide. Crafting a good weapon... hell, understanding the forging system in the first place? Oh believe me, you'll wish you had a guide. I'm pretty sure you can't get stuck by placing terrain in a way that stops you from progressing through any of the three main quest lines, at least.

Ocarina of Time with textures and shaders packs : still one of the goats; almost three decades later the magic is there, although the gameplay itself feels a bit janky compared to the more recent entries.

The three Castlevania games from the Dominus Collection (Dawn of Sorrow, Portrait of Ruin, Order of Ecclesia) : all three are really good. They all have their bad points, but they're still some of my favourites.

back before, in 90s, i played LoM blind play, and missed many things, and few years ago, following guide, finally gave me the light. the game is wonderful, but how the game is played is not for blind playthrough, duh.
still, my fave Mana series is LoM. and occasionally still listen to the BGM, superb BGM example on the video game industry, which I often told to my students

  • Warhammer 40k Final Liberation: it has Commissar Holt, Giant mechas(that both Imperium and Ork uses), and Live-action cutscenes sets in 40k Universe
  • Lucasarts' Afterlife
  • Batman Arkham Knight: tried playing it's PS4 version of Steam Deck, later bought it's PC version from GOG and installed it with Heroic Games Launcher in my Steam Deck
  • Deus Ex: Mankind Divided(we can completely avoid killing people(inclluding Bosses) in this game)
  • and this list is goes on

I had a debt with 2 games that were launched circa the pandemic.
- 13 Sentinles: Aegis Rim
- Death Stranding

I was absolutely hooked on them until I finished. Even platinumed 13 sentinels.

Prey 2017
I slept on this for years because I couldn't grasp the combat mechanics, but I picked up a used copy and gave it another go recently and I'm loving it atm. Though I've just stumbled on another difficulty spike on my second Nightmare encounter..😬 the story is great and the environment is really immersive.
Would recommend.

I'm trying to figure out the best way to play Policenauts via Saturn emulation on PC...
Beetle Saturn core is by far still the most accurate, but it obviously relies on RetroArch. If RA is not your thing, then there is a new player in the Saturn Emulation game called Ymir, which is already more accurate than everything else other than Beetle. Kronos, Yaba, and Yabause emulators have piss poor accuracy, and always have. They're only really worthwhile on very weak hardware that can't run Beetle ot Ymir. Definitely avoid those on a PC.

Pasting text doesn't seem to be working on my phone right now, but you can find the Git page via a Google search of the emu name. Nightly builds are fine.

Does it have to be the Saturn version?
I don't know if there are any differences, but I played Policenauts a long time ago with a fan translated PSX version on my CFW PSP. I thought it was great.

I don't really know what to say if it just doesn't click for you and you get bored. Unfortunately, that happens with some games

Hades is a roguelite where you die and restart often, that's by design and early runs can feel frustrating or boring.

You do get better with practice (learning enemy patterns, dash-strike combos, and adapting to RNG), progression unlocks more tools (extra health, damage, etc.) and new weapons

Yeah but my hardware is from 2014. so not exactly the fastest CPU in the world..would it be ok to run beetle?

Didn't play and finish that many old games this year, but I really enjoyed replaying Gears of War 1 & 2 on the 360. Playing GoW 3 'right now', but won't be able to finish it in 2025.

My old Ivy Bridge i5 3570K (from around 2012-3) can run it at full speed with the most demanding games. I was going to use it for a little emulation build last year before chucking in a virtual pinball machine instead.

Give it a try. You'll probably be fine. RA can be daunting to setup, but it's awesome once you have everything to your liking. It's still unmatched in terms of how seamless it all is. Everything is pretty much integrated without having to mess around with standalone emulators that more often than not have poor frame pacing and higher latency. The CRT shaders (they'll use your GPU) can make that Policenauts art look fantastic. The Beetle core has mouse support too, so you can use that for the game if you please.

I actually played it last year again on my phone with RA for Android. Touchscreen works great for these games
