Best opening music in a game?

Wild Arms is pretty good. But it was ruined by the big WTF at the asstastic title screen with that shitty little ditty.
And I must admit I enjoyed the FFX-2 opening. So much that I attempted to karaoke it.

Ah, that was terrible.

Another vote for Chrono Cross.

Also love the one in
FFVIII
Dark Cloud 2
Breath of Fire 4 and 5

Although they are songs, Tales series always have really good openings. Key to My Heart and Starry Heavens being the best, imo.

edit: damn, forgot about Into the Wilderness from Wildarms. Loved that.

In case you never played the original, give it another go whilst Snake is swimming up towards the underground dock at the very start. Then get back to me.

Heh. I thought the same piece when opening this thread. Fantastic. Also FFVII's main menu music.

Am I the only one that likes Snake Eater?
I give my life, not for honor, but for YOUUUUU!!!
I'm stillllllll in a dreaaaammm, SNAKE EATERRRR!!!
:)

Fuck yeah! If you consider that the opening.. a few hours into the game.. That is the hands. down. winner. I went nuts went it started up after all that shit. That was BRILLIANT. MGS2 was good also, with it's opening, but I still think MGS1, and MGS3 especially, surpass it's action flick styled opening music. I still remember being mesmerized by having the game though, and got pissed upon seeing slight spoilers before I stopped the intro. Especially because the Raiden rumor flew around a few days before it hit, and I seen the Raiden-like hair sticking out.

As for other picks.. Shenmue's opening with Shen Hua. The entire score for that game is so insanely good, and it hits you from the first scene. Beautiful opening.

Anyone remember the nice, tribal chanting melody during the Suikoden 3 intro? I would never skip that movie before loading up my game.

I remember I was depressed after playing the game and finding out how lacking the rest of the music was. Oh well, sweet game nonetheless.

Games that deserve a mention, although they may not be the best:

Katamari Damacy (Okay..so maybe this IS one of the best)
LoZ: Majora's Mask (Maybe hearing an orchestrated version of this recently had an influence)
Metroid Prime

Oh, and "Broken Wings" opening Vice City was classic. That game really set up and immersed you into the atmosphere and world better than either of the other 2 GTA's of this gen. It was set up perfectly like an 80's movie, and then the flight in.. Really cool. That was a glorious day when I skipped school to stay home and go back to the 80's. :lol

Yeah, that was the height of the game's greatness imo. I was sucked in thinking "look at the production quality!" and it was never matched again.

Chrono Cross' "Scars of Time" obliterates the competition. Only FF8's "Liberi Fatali" is left alive(barely).

He asked for best opening music? Why are some people listing multiple games? Ack. It is definitely Chrono Cross.

It's just like anything else. What's your favorite movie? Favorite food? Favorite song? But I agree...everyone should realize Chrono Cross is #1.

I've always had a soft spot for the intro music to Wild Arms.

Me too, love that intro.

The one who mentioned Suikoden 3, it is one of the best intros ever!! The animation and music rocks!! Too bad the rest of the game didn't have animation like that though.

I've got a soft spot for Phantasy Star 2's opening chords, when the 2 orange chicks start fading in. I'd never heard the Genesis produce such a sound before that.

Final Fantasy VI - Tina/Terra's Theme - Nobuo Uematsu

I'm surprised no one mentioned this yet (edit: hooray for svenuce :D ). No one else has fond memories of seeing the magitek armor in formation crossing the snowy field with this music playing? I'd be among the first to say that Uematsu is overrated (yet still wonderfully talented regardless), but I have to say that the man has an absolute gift for opening themes.

Wild Arms - Into the Wilderness - Michiko Naruke

The original Wild Arms score still stands tall as one of the catchiest RPG soundtracks of all time in my opinion, and the opening theme is the epitome of that. Whistle the first bar of this song and my mind will always wander to my time with this game.

Chrono Cross - Chrono Cross ~ Scars of Time - Yasunori Mitsuda

I'll admit it. I'm pretty gay for Mitsuda. That being said, I know several people that don't understand why Mitsuda has received so much praise over the years for his work. Not a single one of them could deny that this was an incredible piece.

Jet Set Radio Future - The Concept of Love - Hideki Naganuma

Like many people, I owned this game for about a year before I actually got around to purchasing an Xbox and playing it. I remember starting up the Xbox, waiting for it to load, getting my chair and my drink, and taking off my shoes, and just when I was looking away from the TV I heard the grinding synth and the catchy lyrics and I knew all was well.

Edit: Looking over my post, I found it interesting that aside from the music, I think all these games aren't great, but good at best.

Shadow of the Colossus
Chrono Cross
Suikoden III
Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance (I love this one..)
Tales of Symphonia (JP)
Xenosaga Episode II (cinematics only, I hated the game music)

The first song that popped in my head when I saw the title of this thread was Red Wings from Final Fantasy IV...

There are so many, though... this thread is full of great picks.

Opening song for Guilty Gear (PS1) still rocks as hard as it did back in the day. They never did match the quality and energy of the first soundtrack...

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
Not only is the classic theme done with guitar amazing, but the Outset Island theme is the best 'Hometown' theme I've ever heard. Easily two of the best tracks in the Zelda series.
