Best pc coop games with rpg elements?

Hi diddly o gafaroonies,

My friend and I have been playing and searching for Co op games on pc, both upcoming and released, with rpg elements. We both agreed that with a sense of progression of leveling up, getting better equipment/skills that it makes the game for both of us worth diving into.

What are the best options out there? List everything you can think of. Even titles like castle crashers we consider in this group for example.

While not strictly an RPG mechanic, resident evil revelations 2 has split-screen co-op (note, ONLY split screen, no online co op) and you earn BP by exploring the environment. You cash in the BP at the end of each chapter to fill out a talent tree (20% more melee damage, longer I-frames on dodging, healing is faster, healing heals more, grenades do more damage)

This is what my roommate and I have been playing recently, which is why it comes to mind. Might not be exactly what you're looking for, but it's the best resident evil since 4 or 5 imo, and we're enjoying it a lot. Sorry if this isn't what you're looking for.

I'll keep trying to think of other co-op (online) games with rpg mechanics tho. I'd say magicka but there's really no rpg in there, tbh.

Shadow Warrior 2 literally just released yesterday and has a very Borderlands-y feel. Of course the aforementioned Borderlands 1/2. I'm gonna go off the deep end and recommend checking out Icewind Dale enhanced edition (and 2 if you buy off GOG and use gameranger). Doesn't execute multiplayer fantasy RPG quite as well as Divinity, but it's about as close to a PC version of the real P&P tabletop D&D dungeon crawling experience that you're gonna get.

What about Hunted: The Demon's Forge? I hear single player is awful, but co-op is fun.
Blood Knights looks like cheap dumb fun. Get it for 2 bucks the next Steam sale.

I haven't tried coop yet but I'm playing grim dawn right now and I suspect it would be fun going through the game coop

Have you considered hunting games? God Eater 2 Rage Burst might be fun to play with a friend and is quite new. Another option might be Toukiden Kiwami but I hear that port is pretty poor and I think God Eater's mechanics are more fun.

Divinity Original Sin is great if you want something a little more traditional but with a more tactical turn based combat.

Salt & Sanctuary is a great co-op experience.

If you haven't played Dungeon Defenders I highly recommend it.

Abyss Odyssey is a strange mix of fighter, rogue like and RPG. It is pretty short though and there are only 3 characters.

I'm skipping big hitters like Dying Light, Diablo 3, Guacamelee, warframe and mmos in general. I figure you probably have played, are aware of or its already mentioned.

Maybe Gauntlet (2014), though its more dungeon crawler than rpg.

Also Marvel Ultimate Alliance 1, but I'm not sure if the Steam version has been patched. I remember having so much fun playing it on the PSP with a friend back in the day.

Warframe - sci-fi co-op dungeon crawler. The game is all about progression, growing your arsenal and mod collection. However, the game is F2P, which some people seem to hate with a burning passion.

I'll go ahead and give a mention to Moon Hunters. While there's no leveling in the traditional sense, you gain traits based on your choices to events and dialogue, and you can use Opals to buy new abilities. It's essentially a Diablo-like.

The game's meant to be replayed several times, and each playthrough takes about an hour to an hour and a half. The PC version should have online co-op from what I hear, but the PS4 version doesn't.

How story driven is divinity original sin? I wanna play that one first but now he's being stubborn saying that if the second one is out he wants to play that one instead.

If it's fairly story driven I might have to play the first by myself first then

The story is self contained and not the focus, its a very whimsical type of writing and can be enjoyed entirely by itself. The real draw is the emergent gameplay though.

I had a lot of fun playing The Division with with a friend for a month until we both quit. Havent played in a while but I hear they overhauled the entire game so it could be even better now.

Also I havent played but this may fit the bill, and its 50% off (on PC) Warhammer: End Times Vermintide

I guess the question is just how different original sin is to original sin 2, where if we played the second first, eventually ran out of games and decided to play the first would it be a huge downgrade in gameplay?

Shadow Warrior 2
Warhammer: End Times - Vermintide
Killing Floor 2

Came here to post all of these. Vermintide is the most RPG of these action-loot games, but they all scratch that itch a bit.

Also, Path of Exile fo' sho. F2P without being bad.

The issue with killing floor 2 has been some of the community. One of us grabbed an item on the floor and a guy wouldn't stop bitching the entire match that we took it even though it was a map spawning item.

Not to mention he's already really far into the game and I like it better when we're both new into it. Too many bad experiences with friends who are really good in a game they are really into and play non stop and me as a newbie essentially being carried when I play with them which isn't fun at all (monster hunter)

Dying Light is a good one. I have a buddy who's heavily into anything with RPG elements, and we had a fun time going through that.

I would second this and add that as F2P the mechanics only come up if you are a collector or collect them all type person. I easily built an end game build just through regular play, but by collecting rare items and then trading to build sets that I wanted/needed.

for example I found a latron prime or whatever gun and traded other rare parts to put it together. don't however try to collect everything, it would be the equivalent of collecting everything in destiny which isn't free I might add.

Wouldn't MMORPGs fit the bill? Most recent ones that I found fun are "Final Fantasy XIV" and "Blade and Soul".

Require way too much of an investment for us. We've considered them but considering the expected playtime on those, I think we'd leave those until we've run out of everything else
