Good Lord the HL2 mods in this topic! No wonder Valve is in no rush to finish Ep3. HL2 fans are occupied with all the mods!

I nearly messed my pants @ that Black Mesa mod. The reason I passed on HL: Source is because it looked like HL1. I will be looking forward to that.

I saw someone mention NWN (Neverwinter Nights). Here are some of my favorites:

http://nwvault.ign.com/View.php?view=Modules.Detail&id=2686
http://nwvault.ign.com/View.php?view=Modules.Detail&id=2927

Twilight and Midnight, the first two parts of what was planned to be a trilogy (Dawn would have been the third), but the scripting, the character development between the PC and the Drow "henchmen," out did Bioware itself, and Rick Burton became so renowned for these mod(ule)s, that Bioware hired him (http://nwn.bioware.com/players/profile_rickburton.html). Nuff said.

http://nwvault.ign.com/View.php?view=Modules.Detail&id=1043

Guild war. Best rogue mod(ule) I've ever played. It fits the character class perfectly. More backstabbing than dueling, good use of find/disarm traps, lockpicking, and all the other things that rogues should do. Even the items have great backstories to them.

http://nwvault.ign.com/View.php?view=Modules.Detail&id=4078
http://nwvault.ign.com/View.php?view=Modules.Detail&id=2865

Story-heavy mod(ules) which are H&S lite and story-heavy. Should play on your emotions/psychology.

There are literally hundreds of mods, and at least one-hundred worth playing, but these, in my experience, are the best of the best of the best.

Holy shit, there's a porno mod for Dragon age.

Like real porn, replaces the sex scenes in the shipped version with some pretty hard core banginl :lol

Thanks Blackmamba... because of you I just favorited this thread... I will mod the heck out of my street fighter IV

No problem. Can make it as close to Marvel vs Capcom 3 as we're likely to see for awhile. :D

I'm sure it's been mentioned before, but way back in the day Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul with Martigen's monster mods saved Oblivion for me. Turned it from turd to gold with one giant bug-ridden install.

A special shout out to small but essential mods: Dungeon-be-Gone for Baldur's Gate 2.

Any good story mods for NWN2?

Unfortunately, the community split like what happened with L4D/L4D2. They didn't make the content backwards-compatible, and so, many people either had moved on by the time NWN2 rolled around or kept modding for NWN.

Not to say that you can't find any content. But it's a bit harder. The best stuff was on NWN, IMO.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl Mod: Narodnaya Solyanka.

It is made by russians and is basically a hodge-podge of all the greatest russian mods. A translation is being made at that link. Includes 30 maps (Original Stalker had about 10-15).

These maps are full of new quests, traders, monsters, weapons, artefacts, etc.

There is upgrading, bartering, tons of anomalies, artefacts, super smart AI, tons of new quests, expanded storyline, teleporters, etc.

Graphics are a lot better as well. This mode triples or quadraples the amount of content in STALKER. I have been playing for a month now with about 15 to 20 hours. I have barely scratched the surface and have visited only 7 of the places (most of them are the old ones, I just finished X18 and have a ton more to go).

This is the best singular mod possibly matched by FCOM: convergence for Oblivion. TBH this mod has much more content but Oblivion has a ton of smaller mods.

Seriously though, GET THIS MOD. It includes almost every single Russian mod (AMK, OGSM, NLC, etc.) and is about 5 gigabytes when downloaded and unrared (pretty much the same size as the normal game.

There are tons of songs to collect and play on an MP3 player, difficulty is way up with a far better economy that involves bartering. At the beginning of the game, you will be almost constantly out of ammo and medkits but this changes.

This includes a lot of alpha levels as well as many original ones. All the Clear Sky maps are in it as well and full of new and old characters and tons of new quests. Spent a good 5 hours in swamps today doing quests.

Stealth is greatly improved. You can be zombified by controllers. Almost every old story character has an extra quests and back story.

Did I mention how this mod has the content of like all the stalker games combined and then tripled?
Sounds awesome. I'll check this out tomorrow in more detail.

I have been thinking about doing mods for COD4 specificly SP mods. So I'm intrested to see if there are any good COD4 mods ?

Insurgency (INS) is a total conversion for Valve Software's Half-Life 2, powered by the Source Engine. INS immerses the player in an intense online combat experience. Set on the modern battlefields, Insurgency simulates infantry combat that encourages the use of teamwork and tactics to close with and destroy the enemy.

free total conversion only Steam and a Source-based game required:

-chain of command
commanders assign objectives and give waypoints
-morale
morale scoring system to set high value on teamplay
-reinforcement waves
unique reinforcement wave system
-immersive combat
iron sights, free aim, ricochet, bullet penetration, weapon weights, and more
-no bullsh*t hud
only see what's important, when it's important
-weapon caches
used for rearming on the battlefield
-suppression effects
fear the enemy bullets, supress enemy activity with cover fire

Insurgency: Modern Infantry Combat is a collective effort made by a group of developers. Our goal is to create an immersive and enjoyable first-person-shooter with next-generation production values based on Valve Software's Source Engine.

It all started back in 2002, when the initial core of INS developers decided to create a first-person-shooter that could get right some of the things other shooters seemed to have gotten wrong in the past: immersive gameplay and teamwork were the key values of this initial vision.

As a result, Insurgency Team set out to design and create an online multiplayer game that featured squad-based gameplay and a feeling of scale representing that of a real war environment.

The Insurgency Team has transformed Insurgency: Modern Infantry Combat it into what it is now: a huge project on a global scale. Many developers and contributors, from all over the world, have added to the overall experience - quite a few of them have become professionals in the videogame industry thanks to their work and the experience gained by being part of the Insurgency Team. Insurgency enjoys a loyal player base, a thriving community, a dedicated and stable group of developers and a constant flow of updates and releases that have consolidated this mod as one of the top Source mods available.

Insurgency: Modern Infantry Combat (now available on Steam) has received the Player's Choice 2007 Mod of the Year award from ModDB, as well as the "Best Source Mod of 2007" Gold Award from Steamfriends. The current development plans of this total conversion include new theatres, porting the game to the latest Orange Box engine, and the release of a regular flow of updates and improvements that will carry Insurgency into the next generation.

The best mod I've ever played. Hands down.

Also one of the most realistic games I've played. You can't just up and run into enemies, it's all about laying down smoke, advancing, flanking, waiting. Something I haven't seen any other game even begin to get right. And then at the same time incredibly fun and balanced.

Recommend it for anyone that wants a fun realistic modern shooter theatre completely the opposite to COD, plus the sound design is awesome as well.

Oh and it has the option to turn of kill notifications ... which makes for the best fucking games ever. Some sniper hiding in a hut over looking a valley you need to get up to ... see him fire ... did you get him? You sure you saw a blood splat? ... move up ... <crack> team mate in front of you dies! argh he's still alive! So much fun.

It probably won't get much recognition around here but ETPro singlehandedly kept the Enemy Territory competitive scene alive for many years. The game was very rough around the edges on release to say at the least. Given that it was free I suppose it came as no surprise but ETPro improved upon the base game in almost every aspect making it one of the most polished and balanced competitive shooters in recent years.

Edit: Probably should have noticed that this thread has been around for 2 years and ETPro has already been mentioned.

Glad to see this thread resurrected as I have just recently started taking an active interest in some mods.

Renegade X is a released-as-mod/forthcoming-standalone remake of the multiplayer from C&C: Renegade. Renegade has a really unique blend of RTS and FPS, putting you in the shoes of the forces of GDI or NOD attempting to destroy the opposing team's base.

Oh, and you can use nukes.

A Path Beyond adapts the Renegade engine for multiplayer Red Alert action in the style of Renegade. It's also stand-alone, which I think is really cool. Again, if you like the idea of base vs base combat including vehicles and crazy weapons, this is for you.

Empires Mod is what I've been playing the last few days. It's an RTS/FPS hybrid where one player on each team takes the RTS perspective and commands squads of infantry/vehicles. Unlike the other two games, the bases in Empires are dynamic, which means you can request a vehicle repair station and have your Commander put it down near the frontlines. Some engineers work to get it build, and then your tank push is that much more effective. It's also very active; the 54-person server I've been playing on is constantly full.

Tremulous is an awesome Aliens vs Humans game build on the Quake II engine. It and Natural Selection both inherit from the same inspiration, but I haven't played the former so I can't comment on the differences. I also have no idea how active it is, as I've only played at LAN. It's solid fun, though, and gives you a level of freedom that's largely gone from the modern FPS.

Rocket Arena 3 for Q3A was especially awesome.

sy1r2d.jpg

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MRZQbbLJDmM

The level design was nearly perfect and there is nothing in todays shooters like rocket jumping through a level with insane speed and placing an air-rocket / rail combo.

Edit: And I remember playing a Q3A mod which combined all id games from Wolfenstein to Q3A as player classes with specific movement and weapons. The game had great mods (Action Q3, Akimbo, etc).

There hasn't been any news on They Hunger since 2008.

I do know that Neil Manke became quite ill sometime in the past few years.

Research and Development is probably the best singleplayer Half-Life 2 mod in terms of level design. Please download it.

Another interesting one that I haven't seen mentioned here yet is Human Error.
http://www.moddb.com/mods/half-life-2-short-stories

Definitely the most interesting fan exploration of the Half-Life universe I've seen yet, "Human Error" puts you on the side of the Combine Civil Protection, and does everything it can to show the other side of the war.

"Human Error" pits you against rebels, Vortigaunts, and the original Half-Life's Alien Grunts which the modders recreated for the Source engine, from the other side of Combine technology. You get to drive a Combine APC very early on, solve puzzles with controllable manhacks, and, finally, get to use the sniper rifle. They not only managed to figure out how all that stuff works from a playable end, but design some great challenges around it all too.

"Human Error" is equally interesting narrative-wise, as it tries to explore just why humans willingly join the Combine. You spend most of your time hanging around three main characters whose banter is written and performed just well enough to work by fan-made standards and create an eerily "normal" workplace atmosphere. All the while, the mod is also painting the protagonist's own mental journey as we see more and more of his life immediately before joining the Combine.

I second this. It has a couple issues, but overall it's really creative and gorgeous and fun.

Valve really needs to implement the ability to upload mods and stuff on to Steam + auto-updates. I'm hoping that with their reworking of the Source tools that they will release similar to UE3 and build it right into Steam for all users so that all people can play new projects, rate them, give feedback, and create their own.

Fallout 3 / New Vegas

Real-Time Settler

Just astounding to me how this guy took the engine and created all this gameplay that didn't exist even in concept from the original games. Placing buildings, harvesting resources, hiring people, etc. Plus, you can import structures that are non-standard and create said settlement anywhere in game you like.

Spoke to the Devs the other day, they said it's just going through the last stages of beta testing. The mod itself is complete.
God it will be amazing when it's released because then people will stop saying, I am holding off on playing HL1 because I just want to play Black Mesa.

I hope so bad Valve puts it on Steam proper and pimps it on the front page. (I don't think they have upped any mods in a while).

FreeSpace Open for FreeSpace 2

Huge package of mods that updates the graphics of FreeSpace 2 with new models, up-res textures, the works. It also adds new thematic campaigns (Battlestar Gallactica and Babylon 5 campaigns) and even recreation of other video games on FS2 updated engine (Wing Commander Saga).

Now all in one convenient automatic installer:

YES! Action Quake 2 and it's spiritual successor Action Half-Life are two of my all time favorite FPS mods. I made several skins for AQ2 back in the day, including an awesome ninja skin that basically looks like Hanzo Hattori from Samuri Spirits/Shodown.

Agreed, mod support is dwindling a bit and the last time they did something for the mods was to give them storage space on steam which was a few years back when Synergy, Zombie Panic Source and others were added to steam.

So far this have the only reply I'm getting from every forum for the last couple of days. I guess I won't be creating levels anymore for Gears since not a lot of people have it and the mod community is almost dead. I'm probably going to try some Half Life 2 or Crysis modding.

Also whoever was saying that Gears PC is expensive, it's $19.99 on GFW marketplace.
