Best PC RPG games of the previous generation?

Considering the preferences stated in the OP and what you already played this is the best answer. Very underrated game, or at least not well known enough.

Yeah it's pretty sad how few people know of it. The atmosphere feels very much like Morrowind but even more oppressive. I remember it getting a tiny quarter page review and a 5/10 score in my local gaming magazine. Idiots :/

Easily one of my top 5 WRPGs ever. I can't think of a more atmospheric game. You might as well pick up Gothic 2 which you can get quite often at a greatly reduced price at Steam - two outstanding, underrated gems.

Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the betrayer
In my opinion the best written rpg since planescape and a lot better than the vanilla campaign. Number two on my list of favourite RPGs of all time, well worth playing if you like Planescape and moral ambiguity in your story.

Vampire: The masquerade Bloodlines
The Deus Ex for 'last generation'. With fanpatches it's a masterpiece. Play if you like Deus Ex/System Shock.

The Witcher
Well written action rpg with emphasis on choices, but not in the Bioware evil/good kinda way but in a more interesting direction. Choices you make can influence things several hours afterwards that you had no clue it could.

Knights of the old Republic 2
A much more interesting story than the first game but sadly released before it was complete. Although this point is often exaggerated the ending level is a bit of a letdown, but Obsidians deconstruction of the Star Wars universe is very interesting. This might have been my number one pick instead of MotB if Obsidian would have been given time to complete it, but it's still a really good game and what the story does to the Star Wars universe is original.

i was my self looking for old rpgs..my gpu is fried so can play games. kotor runs fine but kotor2 dosnt run.so rpgs that run on intel chipset

Most of my favourite ones have all been mentioned, but Deus Ex: Invisible War is still a lot of fun to play.

The game has gotten better with time :)

I'm not sure of the wisdom of excluding isometric titles but, with the criteria you've listed, I'd have to offer another vote for Arx Fatalis. Even at the time of it's release it was lacking a little polish in some respects, but it's a game that's very much in the mould of Ultima Underworld, and that can only be a good thing.

Drakensang (get mods to speed up walk speed) this could be considered isometric, i guess?
Gothic II Gold - 100+ hrs of content easy, challenging

This game is AWESOME, and believe it or not I had never played it before.

I havent been hooked on a game like this since I first played oblivion or fallout.

really LTTP I know, but I just bought it on GOG for 5$. totally worth it.

It's sad that you'll miss the whole line of Infinity Engine RPGs, as well as Arcanum and Temple of Elemental Evil by avoiding the isometric games.

Edit: Here's a recommendation that hasn't come up yet: Anachronox. Ion Storm Dallas's only good game.

I've wanted to play this game for YEARS, sadly I don't think it's on GOG or Steam :(

OP: I don't really know much about what constitutes a "generation" in PC gaming (8086 -> 286 -> 386 -> 486 -> Pentium -> Early 3D acceleration/Pentium 2 -> Pentium 3 -> Pentium 4 -> multicore??). But, my first recommendation is The Witcher 1, it's one of my top 5 PC RPGs, though it has its share of flaws it also has a ton of heart and character. I liked it much more than its sequel, even.

Anachronox sounds awesome, like I said above... but I never played it, I was always interested in how it was strongly influenced by Chrono Trigger. I just noticed the Eidos on the box, S-E should definitely re-release this. What about the Ultima Underworld titles? Or Eye of the Beholder? Older titles but both first person. And also there were a few big PC RPG fans who had good things to say about Wizardry 8 and Betrayal at Krondor, but I know absolutely nothing about them.

Previous gen or gens? I would still argue Baulder's Gate any day but I may be off on the timeline here.

First person is a tougher answer. I can take the cheap copout and say ESIV.

Guild Wars was great to me too for a 3rd person MMO.

Gothic I and II are really recommended, lots of fun and challenging, and close to the games you liked in the OP, third person action RPG with a deep world.

Also Divine Divinity is isometric but it's great, kinda like an open world Diablo.
