Best PS4 Headphones for $100 or Less?

If you're new to headsets, if you're going wireless be mindful of where your router is located and what other wireless devices are around you. They can cause interference.

I have,

Open Back - Sennheiser HD558 w/V-Moda

Closed - Kingston HyperX Cloud

Both great and obtained for under $100.

Mine are in fine working order also. Sony improved the design of the hinge mechanism in response to complaints.

Did they? I had the uncharted 4 edition and the plastic hinges that people complained about breaking looked the same.

Here is a picture of the old hinge (right) and the newer design (left).

The old headsets were prone to cracking, especially if you over stretched them when putting them on and taking them off.

Sony MDR-100 I've heard are quite nice. They look nice. You only got a Smartphone style mic along the cord. It's probably not going to be ideal.

The 7506'ers are perhaps the most legendary legit best value for the buck headphones in the world. 65 dollars on amazon, you got thousand of reviews that explain why this has been the studio monitor headphone of choice for DECADES; https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000AJIF4E/?tag=neogaf0e-20

Again. No Mic. But it's almost at a point, where you need to have these fucking cans because they are just that universal. You're not going to get get tech this good for this fucking price. This product LITERALLY sounds better than gaming headphones that cost upwards 300 dollars.

In fact, finding a pair of headphones with great sound quality and good mic is almost hilariously absent, and even the 300 dollar+ wireless phones seems laughable from a value stand point.

Status-Audio-HD-One.jpg

Status Audio HD One are another pair of Beats by Dre clones, with comparable sound quality- Again. to a 300 dollar headphone. And these goes for 44 dollars; https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00SWDHUXW/?tag=neogaf0e-20

Now, I'm not saying the 7506's (monitor) or the Audio Ones (flashy, looks good) are what you want with your PS4, but it just goes to show what outragous discrepancy there is between brands and comparable quality.

The only ones I've seen that I want, that doesn't bother me aesthetically, like the turtle beach, the astro and many others, is the Steelseries 800.

250 dollars. But its the only fucking pair of gaming cans that I've heard that has great sound quality AND acceptable mic performance; https://www.amazon.com/dp/B016YGMH9U/?tag=neogaf0e-20

But what I really love about these is that the wireless battery has almost 20 hours of playtime. Thats a industry leader AFAIK, and the genius is that there are two batteries recharable, one in each driver.

If I had the dough, these are the ones I would get. But I have my reservations; I treat my phones hard. My MTH-50s are falling apart (the foam at least), and I wonder if these have good quality. Problem with reviews is that they are based on few weeks of usage, but how will products hold up 3-4-5 years down the line? That is why I am partial towards something like 7506 because you know you could strangle someone with that cord, and the connector quality wouldnt skip a beat.

I did have the original Siberia back in 07 (I believe?) and that thing has lasted until today. I literally used that headphone as a boomerang. It fell out the window and landed on concrete. I've sat on it. It just won't stop working. But that pair had shitty audio quality and is 9 years old.

I've had an expensive pair of Denon phones that cracked the on the headband after 6 months and being careful with it. Stellar reviewed solid constructed Denons made from premium materials. So it's weird how cheap gaming plastic headphones can last forever, and some sturdier built models from most respected companies just shit the bed when farting in the wind.

I hope Sony will make a 7506 version with a build in detachable mic. That would be awesome. So sorry for the rambling but I dont know what to tell you. this market is fucked. Gaming peripherals as a category is one big oxymoron and I hate how our recommendations and reviews are based on tech judged like mayflies. I really want tech that just fucking works forever. I'm sick of products that dont hold up with wear and tear.

I plug a pair of Superlux 668B headphones into the audio jack of my Dualshock 4. With an adapter I could even add a mic to that, and it's all "wireless" (no cable from your PS4 to you), with excellent sound quality and cost me like 40€. Couldn't be happier.

Tek Syndicate video about it

Gaming Headsets are shit, even more so if they have "real surround". The only result you get from having more than one driver per ear is that each individual driver will be of lower quality.
Emulated surround sound is much better, because (like in real life) your brain interprets sounds as coming from a particular direction due to frequency changes (or something similar, doesn't really matter for the point I'm trying to make), which can be perfectly emulated.

I can locate enemies via their footsteps in shooters easily like that. BF4 for example has an "enhanced stereo mode".

The Playstation Gold Heaset.

Most comfortable headset i have ever used and sounds fucking amazing.

Just close the thread now.

Are any of the 7.1 headsets good? I've never experienced it in headphones before. If the implementation is good I'd be interested in a pair that supports it.

Don't bother the technology doesn't make a real difference, if you're researching info applicable, like if you want to play Counter-Strike or something and sound positionals are really important, focus your search on "Sound Stage".

Highly recommend the Hyper x series headsets. Metal frame is much nicer after dealing with headsets that were just plastic and snapping too much (turtle beach/golds). Plus they're just the most comfortable set I've ever used.

Another for the Golds. I use mine daily and travel with them (thrown in a backpack) and they've shown no signs of weakness. I've had them for about a year now.

I don't have time for wired setups. That shit is so PS2 era (my console is also too far away).

My Golds snapped in half after about 1.5 years.

Regardless of the build quality, the Hyper Clouds have a better mic, sound way better, and with substantially more bass.

Usual thread with usual answers. Don't buy a headset.

Now that that's out of the way, wait for Black Friday and pick up a pair of HD 598s for $100. They go on sale every year. If you don't want to wait the Philips SHP9500s are also good and cheap. Pick up whichever attachable mic you want.

Yep gaming audio products are awful, please don't buy them. You play large amount of that price into their marketing.

Get nice pair of cans like AD700/900 or HD598.

I recently stepped onto my Gold Headset, which resulted in a visibly cracked hinges. It was a great headset in my opinion but I wonder what alternatives are out there. I would always recommend them as a noob but there obviously much better non-gaming headphones out there.

Oddly enough I'm currently also searching for Sony headphones which would kinda fit to the PS4 visually. Even though I'd take any comfortable Sony headphones for about 100$. The Sony MDR-ZX770BN Bluetooth one in black/blue would be my first choice but I want a wired one with a removable cable, so I can attach a microphone to it. The MDR-V55 seems to be another great alternative but it's a bit too pricey... :/

My gold headset just stopped functioning altogether. I was using it on PC and they first they started cutting in and out really terribly so I switched channels which seemed to fix it.

Then the POS wouldn't even turn on despite sitting on the charger for hours. Probably the worst headset I've ever owned.

Man, I'm surprised to see so much hate for the Gold. Feels like people were going nuts for it a year or two ago. I guess I'm lucky because mine hasn't broken on me and the sound quality is great.

Having said that, the HyperX Cloud is a great headset. That's what I use on PC.

Maybe if he likes broken headphones after a month of use.

I mean how? I've come home to find my 3yo playing with the golds on numerous occasions and they haven't broke yet.

I think they are a perfectly reasonable pair of headphones but will probably try something else when the time comes.

I was wondering this myself. I just returned the Sony golds because the sound kept popping and crackling, apparently it has to do with the usb dongle not cooperating with the system. Guess I'll have to look into the Hyper Clouds.

What are people doing to their Gold headsets to break them? Do people have unusually large heads or something?

I'd recommend the Golds if you're after wireless. Can't get a better wireless headset for the price.

Had mine for over a year now. No complaints here!

I've heard the "fragile" complaints before I bought mine but went ahead and got them anyway.

6 months later, I'm convinced these people are playing catch with them.
Nope. I had mine for a little over a year and suddenly the ear snapped off. I noticed small cracks a couple weeks from buying but no full on breakage
I should have returned them when I had the chance

Wear them. It's not difficult to see precisely the part that's prone to breaking. If you're familiar with plastic as a material, you should be more surprised that something the size of a pinhead was intended to resist any stress on normal usage

My Astro A30s are have more tape than plastic holding them together right now, so need to look at a replacement.

Sadly, it doesn't look, like I can just outright buy a new Astro headset without having to get the mixamp and stuff as well.

Looking at these as alternatives to plug into the mixamp.

Anyone have experience with any of these headsets? Is there any issues I could expect running these through the Astro gear?

Alternatively, if anyone knows where in Oz I can pick up a set of A40's on their own?

I see that image all the time and was very worried about mine breaking at the 1 year mark which was the average life I was seeing here. Have had them now for 2 years and they still have yet to break.
Hope I didn't just jinx myself :(

Thank you GAF, just bought the Hyper Cloud 2's and they're awesome, you get a really good product for 90 dollars. Only thing that drives me crazy is any headset I plug into the DS4 tends to make a skipping sound every here and there, but oh well, hopefully they improve this in the next DS iteration.

Resetting the controller by hitting that tiny button on the back of the controller helps, but only for so long. Is there any other fix for this or is it just something I'll have to deal with?

The Sennheiser HD 598 + v-moda boompro is a good setup, but be warned, you have to mod the headphones to get the boompro to fit. The 598s use a twist-lock mechanism that must be stripped off with a screwdriver after taking your $130 headphones apart. Maybe not everyone's cup of tea.

Used to sell audio when i was younger.
Prob audio technica and sennheiser.

stay the f away from anything marketed to "gamers"

I'm not sure if they work with the PS4 and if he can add a mic, but in the sub 100$ range there's nothing that sounds like these and they're even on sale now.

That being said, the HyperX Cloud II sound good, way better than any other "gamer" product.

weird question, but how are these for watching movies? Really hate my setup right now and I'm about to move so it would be a good temporary solution.
The Cloud II has week bass for movies and music compared to similarly priced headphones, though the Cloud IIs are pretty solid for gaming.

Nope nope nope. Garbage build quality. Horrible mic. NOPE.

Listen to the man. PlayStation Gold is absolute crap for a microphone quality. Initially I was pleasantly surprised by the headset, but after hearing what others have to listen to... just... no. The microphone sound quality is absolute garbage even locally if you consider something like making a Lets Play video. Also, the design of the phones is rather poor. They don't feel that comfortable after a long stint. They don't breathe at all.

The sound quality is ok I guess. I don't like overbearing bass and these are fairly sharp, too. I wouldn't put too much emphasis on the virtual mode. Its what these things usually are. Gimmicky at best.

Stay away from the PlayStation Gold Wireless if while playing with someone you ever think that their microphone quality is awful. Don't do that to people in turn.
