Also take a minute and listen to those who did it first ;D

Frank Zappa - Black Napkins
Same Zappa - Filthy Habits

Jeff Beck Scatterbrain

Mahavishnu Orchestra - Meeting of the Spirits

----------------------------------------------------------
Bonus because they are my favourites:
King Crimson - Larks Tongue is Aspik part I <-- does anyone else hear Legend of Zelda in some parts??? Can't be the only one.

You quoted Jeff, Zappa, and Crimson in one post. I like you

When I saw beck live he did a heavy metal instrumental version of that lady gaga song that goes ra ra rarara ra. SO GUD

I've gotten really into Blind Guardian's "Weird Dreams" over the past few days, though it is really short.

Don't forget By the Gates of Moria and my personal favorite Beyond the Ice. Beyond the Ice is just one of the best metal songs ever if you ask me. So epic.

Niconiconi (Intro) by Dehumanizing Itratrain Worship is really damn heavy. The guitar solo at 1:37 is amazing.

Wasabi Chicks by Jig-Ai is great assuming a song with audio samples of people talking can still be considered instrumental.

Best album intro has to be Genital Grinder by Carcass. Seeing them play this live was so amazing.

My first thought was "What Russian Circles song do I want to post" and you beat me to it, though I'd go with Atackla or Station

There's also:
Adebisi Shank - Genki Shank
Explosions in the Sky - Last Known Surroundings
From Monument to Masses - To Z (Repeat)
Mogwai - Christmas Steps
Grails - Almost Grew My Hair
Battles - The Yabba
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - East Hastings
Red Sparrowes - A Hail of Bombs
Torche - Triumph of Venus
And So I Watch You From Afar - I Capture Castles
Alan Parsons Project - Sirius aka The 90s Bulls entrance theme
Nice choices, especially Adebisi Shank, ASIWYFA and Battles. I'll add:
Talons - Hollow Depth
Brontide - Tonitro (live version because it's fun to watch people play around with loop pedals and drum pads)

Best part of astonishing imo.

Ill contribute with bands.

Chon, Intervals, scale the summit

Scale the Summit!! So good. Really surprised no one else has mentioned them. They're a group of music majors who formed a band in college IIRC. The music's atmosphere elevates the track titles.

Also Angel Vivaldi. The album Universal Language is kind of a concept album based off of the classical composer Vivaldi's Four Seasons.

(Sorry on mobile so no links.)

I saw the thread title and came just to make sure Orion was somewhere in the OP or the first page. Good job OP.
Also, To Live is to Die > Ktulu.
This is true.
Just gave it a listen after all these years, it's not as good as I remember it, but I did play it out back in the day.
well I mean Hocus Pocus is pretty much the pinnacle of human achievement so
This was used to great effect in the 2013 formula 1 documentary "1:Life on the Limit", which was an amazing film.

Good job to all the the other posters with all these great addictions to the OP and the links provided for our listening enjoyment. Great thread guys.

Zappa, Vai, Satch, Petrucci, Shawn Lane, etc. Just anything by them. I want to go to a G3 before I die :/

Watching this live. Too much.

Happy to see 70's getting some love in here, also metallica's instrumentals are awesome too.

Dream theater have made some insanely well crafted instumentals such as

hells kitchen - https://youtu.be/TGbYf8xKcLE

Dance of eternity - https://youtu.be/XgnQpxhCPfA

But i think liquid tension experiment (side project) are a better example as they are completely instumental.

Kindred spirits -
https://youtu.be/RTQm7Yag_JY

Acid rain - https://youtu.be/xWnDCYDlBYw

Enjoy!

I can't listen to Deam (it annoys me) but Liquid is fucking rad.

Cliffs of Dover by Eric Johnson might be my favorite instrumental song. Doesn't rock very much though but has some tasty guitar licks

Also gonna second those Thank You Scientist songs posted earlier. Even their non instrumental songs feature some pretty wicked instrumentation.

Just anything by them. I want to go to a G3 before I die :/

correct me if im wrong, but isnt Vai doing his own G3 type thing now too? I cn never choose who my dream g3 lineup is.. Vai and satch are a given obvs but like do I want govan, howe, malmsteen, theres so many. If satch can one day convince Jeff Beck (joes asked him a lot apparently) Id travel the world to see that

Horse the Band has a few that I really like.

Heroes Die:
https://youtu.be/JDfArEwz9V0
I love the evolution of battle sounds throughout the song. From swords and arrows to tanks and machine guns to lasers and spaceships. Fun stuff.

Soaring Quails:
https://youtu.be/vamdYo_Ht3s
I love David Isen's guitar work. Very underrated. I also appreciate this song as a build-up to the next song (not an instrumental, posting for context):
https://youtu.be/vP40Ftzfunk

And if it counts, the second half of I Think We are Both Suffering from the Same Crushing Metaphysical Crisis (3:34 on):
https://youtu.be/ZfFoVoDAbWA
Love Love Love this sound from them.

Secret Chiefs 3 - Vajra (Live at Amoeba)
