Best RPG intros in gaming history?

The song popped in my head the moment I found this

For me it's

Legitimately blew me away.

CG intros always looked cheap to me.

edit: haha, beaten by 1 minute.

Best intro ever.

Final Fantasy VIII closely followed by lunar silver star. Also an honourable mention to all the World of Warcraft expansion intros. Damn I need more rpgs asap.

(hello GAF, first post here, please be gentle with me~.)
FF7. the way the FMV segues into gameplay was incredible at the time, and still is. I find it funny how FF13 tried to pastiche the whole thing yet ultimately failed to imitate the quality of its model.

more recently, NieR. fantastic setting and score.

I haven't played many RPGs at all, but I quite enjoy the intro to Dark Souls. It's always worth watching every time I start a new character.

Totally forgot how awesome Vagrant Story's was. I agree with a lot of this thread, and it made me realize I need to finally start Lost Odyssey.

Obligatory FFVI intro is the best comment. However, Xenogears stands out because when you watch it before the game it makes no sense until near the end of the game. Xenogears I love you!

Edit: fixed a typo. Oops!

Incredible thread, Nostalgia'd hard reading through it.

My pick would be Final Fantasy VIII, Uematsu at his absolute best. Followed very closely by Xenogears (especially in retrospect) and Final Fantasy VI. Both System Shocks as well as Deus Ex are great also.

There are a lot of good intros:

Wild Arms 2cnd Impact: Opening 2

Magna Carta: Tears of Blood

Not an RPG, but this is one of the greatest animated openings in video game history. PSYCHIC FORCE

Wild Arms: 4th Detonator (ignore the singer. She's terrible, but the opening is good. This game is highly underrated IMO. Arguably the best of the series with serious competition from WA 2nd Impact)

Not an opening cinematic, but what is quite possibly the greatest cutscene in videogame history: The Dragon Campaign: Legend of Dragoon

Xenoblade

because it's epic, because it's got two planet-sized creatures fighting each other, and because humans are fighting their own war on one of those titans' kneecap

Like many other have answer FF8. I've said this about 10x everytime this thread is created but when that game came out I watched that intro probably 20+ times. Just watched it again and it made me feel sad and wish I was a teenager again.

Wild Arms 2 by far! The music just screams whimsical life changing adventure.

Next up Final Fantasy VI. Not the cg, just the standard snes intro. The music is so goddamn ominous and terrifying, it climaxes and you're just like, "oh shit this is gonna be dark!" And for its time it was; genocide, nazi-like regime trying to conquer the world, a homicidal mad man in jester garb, unspeakable horrors pouring from the earth. The visuals simplistic, clouds, lightning. It didn't need anything more. It conveyed the tone of this masterpiece PERFECTLY.

That I can recall off the top of my head, and that I recently played, Final Fantasy IX. I wrote up a lengthy post about it a while back after beating it, but I think I dedicated at least one paragraph praising the intro. I thought it was handled wonderfully.

The Final Fantasy VIII intro is my pick as best video game intro. When I first got it on the PSX, I would start a new game just to see it.

Actual in-game intros? Final Fantasy VI easily. So classic

Cinamatic intros? Wild Arms, still some of my favorite style of anime design. Great music.

I really love the first hours of Persona 4, they do such a fantastic job setting the tone of the game.

Well said, sir. Still didn't play Golden to know what's different, but P4 was brilliant.

It's very slow though, so I can see why some people dislike it.

It's good for the 1st time, but successive playthroughs are big chores due to this.

FFVIII is awesome... especially with Liberi Fatali's kick-ass music at the background.

For me it's the first Baldur's Gate. Sarevok was very menacing.

The other is. . . the first Mass Effect where you see Shep for the first time.

+1 Final Fantasy VII. It's short, sweet and drops you right in the middle of the action relatively quickly (compared to other similar games). No long-winded cinematic or stream of credits.

Final Fantasy VIII. That moment at the end of the intro when Seifer slashes Squall's face and the music starts to crescendo is so goosebump-inducing. Such an amazing intro for such an amazing game.

Final Fantasy VI wins this hands down for me, sets the mood perfectly for the best rpg ever.

Edit: IV and VII also had good openings. Too bad VII went quickly downhill after Midgard.
