Best scary enemy designs in games (Stealth Bloodborne thread #729)

I know it's not that scary. But back when I was a kid, certain parts of the very awesome N64 game Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire used to really make my heart race! Esp the sounds and atmosphere surrounding certain levels.

Playing on a crappy 15' CRT back in the day, seeing this thing emerge out of the murky water was SO scary. That whole level was really unpleasant.

You guys should look into the upcoming underwater horror game, Narcosis:

Scariness is objective and all that, but...

Twin Victims from Silent hill 4.

Great design, but I thought they were much more unsettling with the squealing piglet sounds that were used in the pre-release material.
As amazing as Yamaoka is with basic sound design, SH4 had a lot of generic stock sounds. I chalk that up to a stunted development of 4.

Anyways, here's a few more that I found creepy in no particular order (creepiness is subjective and all that):

While I don't find Fatal Frame as scary as many, gotta give credit some of the ghosts do look quite creepy.

Where's that first one from in your quoted pics?

spot_bioshock4.jpg

Fucking plaster splicers from Bioshock scared the piss out of me. Always popping up right behind you, not making a damn noise. Fort Frolic was already scary enough with all of the spider slicers crawling around and Cohen raving like a lunatic the whole time, but these fuckers were on the next level of terrifying.

Granted I'm a huge baby when it comes to scary things in general. Maybe a lot of other players didn't get freaked out like I did.

These things scared the shit out of me--and it was actually worse in subsequent playthroughs because I knew they weren't just statues anymore.

Crones in the Witcher 3. While their design alone is very creepy and disturbing they are further brought to life with top notch writing and voice acting. Also their theme just oozes atmosphere. As villains these were most memorable to me in the whole series, rivaling Gaunter O'Dimm.

Fantastic design, story and music. They were so much menacing and better than the dumb Wild Hunt generic evil bad guys.

If you mean the top of my post with the four quoted pictures, those are the 'Brothers' (or four of the brothers) from the game The Void.

Great design, but I thought they were much more unsettling with the squealing piglet sounds that were used in the pre-release material.

I do not disagree, I think the Twin Victims and Ghosts didn't suffer this as much as the other enemies (poor nurses and dogs especially), but the stock sound design in SH4 didn't help I agree.

NO!

fuck that..

NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE

I think Narcosis should be a fun game.
I'm happy there's a more direct attempt at undersea horror, I know it's not the first but many kind of focus on other things than undersea horror, SOMA will pop up in many's minds but that dealt a lot with machine horror, and Narcosis seems to be really shaping up.

The Crones were awesome. Even Geralt seemed wary, which made them even spookier, considering most monsters are just a days work for him. I found myself avoiding that area because it was so creepy.

It was a bit disappointing that they went down so easy in the end. Kinda spoiled them a little.

Winter Lanterns are my favorite enemies ever. FromSoft really nailed the monstrous union of innocent nursery rhymes and insanity with the soft singing and the rapid animations for the eye movements and etc.

Maggot men in Dark Souls 3.

When one slowly approached me then vomited up its maggoty innards, I think I actually yelled out loud.

I dont know why, but I am not afraid of anything in bloodborne for some reason. I think it is because I am the hunter... AND THEY ARE THE FUCKING PREY.

THEY FEAR ME.

I dunno. I think Bloodborne monsters are just disgusting, they make me go "eww" instead of "ahhhh". I'm not a fan of Bloodborne's artstyle in general.

Clickers from TLOU are nightmare fuel.

The idea that fungus can start in your brain and grow out through your skull and face.

Gives me the shivers.

Bloodborne? Surprisingly, no...

This is a true nightmare beast.

E for Everyone!

Oh god I wasn't the only one

Dusky's got the right idea, Spider Shibito from Siren Blood Curse

And I don't care what anyone says some the Haunted in The Evil Within are metal as fuck

The Giant Depraved Ones in DeS can go fuck themselves. Everytime I saw one of these motherfuckers rushing at me I wanted to quit the game forever.

Usually when I see something scary in a Souls game I immediately start chopping at it with my sword. When I stumbled into the Brain of Mensis in the dark I just turned around and ran back to the elevator, and at the top I closed the application and turned off the PS4 and took the dog for a walk.

Make Contact with Slimey Thing.

The Shark Giants from Bloodborne. Especially those fuckers in the well.

The well moment was the most "nope" moment for me in Bloodborne. I just came down to the well via the ladder and noticed this HUGE ASS THING hanging from the ceiling...immediately noped the fuck out of there.
Later I discovered the alternate route to the well and went on to face my fears. I thought he would drop right when I stepped there, but he didnt...and then I noticed another one patrolling and holy shit.

...In the end I managed to beat them both quite easily, but the initial discovery was terrifying.

Corvians from Dark Souls 3 freak me the fuck out. Especially that grotesque noise when they sprout their wings, and then they go apeshit on you.

The Deep Accursed enemies from DS3.

Yeah, those things give me the jumping willies.

Currently on my first playthrough of TW3, and recently got to this part. They are so gross and creepy. Their theme music is really good too.

That weird disgusting insect monster from Bloodborne (I really like that screenshot I took, really shows how horrifying they are haha)

Would have been a boss fight in any other game but in Bloodborne you just see it casually strolling around in the lakeside courtyard.

Another vote for W3's caretaker. A very simple and surprisingly effective design (plus one of the few sorta-decent boss fights in the whole game)

Not just scary looking, Winter Lanterns are hard as shit!

Parry when they are close to grabbing you. Quite a large window. Riposte. If frenzy hits during the animation you take no damage whatsoever.

Anyways, here's a few more that I found creepy in no particular order (creepiness is subjective and all that):
Some of the Brothers in The Void are just weird in the creepier way.
Can be said of that whole damn game. And of nearly everything Icepick Lodge ever put out.

The New Ghost (especially Richard & Cynthia, in big part due to hose they move)

Some of the Shibito from Siren series give me the creeps:

...But personally speaking, the Yamibito from Forbidden Siren 2 I find MUCH creepier.
